Former Russian double agent seriously ill in Salisbury.

Seems to be a good chance this was actually the Russian who obtained the nerve toxin and was then progressing with it and exposed it, rather than him being poisoned by a third party.

Could also be possible that he was actually a triple agent and his daughter was going to smuggle British Nerve agents back to Russia which he had obtained from the nearby storage facility, but something went wrong.

But the most likely explanation right now is still that Russia took him out.

Could be, to both. There's already some rumours of him freelancing, aren't there?

Good point.

I'm thinking more his daughter could have brought nerve agent from Russia and they botched it up and poisoned themselves. Just an idea.

Can't really see a reason for that but I do wonder if there is a connection there that the daughter was somehow coerced or unknowingly used to carry it out or something.

Although nothing would surprise me sometimes with the naivety or incompetence sometimes shown - I really can't see how either of them would get clearance for something like that with their background(s) or that chemical agents like that would be that insecure.

EDIT: Though there are easier routes I guess it is possible that his position was used in some way as a middle man for transferring stuff to say North Korea from another country (not necessarily Russia) and something went wrong but seems like a long shot to me.

The KGB spiked her perfume with a nerve agent designed to become toxic when it's airborne particles mixed with those of his favourite deodorant! :O

Im staying away from the city center, can't go about my daily business without some vulture reporter stuffing a camera and microphone in your face.

You've seen the scale of clean up going on at the moment?
Imagine the flak the police would cop if a child (edit: Same goes for anyone effected, but I just pictured children as being more prone/inclined to investigating stuff than adults) finds any trace they miss.

The problem with this stuff is that microscopically small doses cripple and kill.

Someone else on the inside perhaps, though why they would hand it off after removing it from Porton Down is anyone's guess, perhaps this ex Russian agent wan't the target he was merely going to take it somewhere else and expose a large crowd to it?

All speculation at this stage, many things are possible.

No exceptions? Gareth Williams and the ensuing ludicrous cover-up springs to mind. Let's not forget David Kelly, either.
Sure, someone else may have killed them, and we'll likely never know the truth about it. But MI5 is authorized to commit crimes on UK territory, and everything about this remains hush.

So if it remains hush how do you know about it then?

However the BBC have reported he was seen regularly meeting with a suited British gentleman in recent months who spoke fluent Russian. It could be that MI6/Russia/third party were trying to get him to come out of retirement and Russia/MI6/etc took him out as a potential threat.

I suspect rather more likely to be the former than the latter - I very much doubt some people working for MI6 can just go obtain some nerve agent and then use it in the UK in an attack that not only potentially kills the target's innocent daughter but also endangers a whole bunch of members of the British public.

I've always been amazed that it's often possible to trace these agents back to an individual lab of origin. Magnificent little boffins!

Well I guess there might be something, the fact that it is a "rare nerve agent" is perhaps rather telling. I think it is more helpful perhaps if they can recover the device used to deliver it

It's amazing what people believe without any evidence. The MSM always tells the truth though, right?

LOL wake up sheeple etc..

I particularly liked this bit:

But I moved long ago past a world view where my country are the “goodies” and Russians are the “baddies”, and instead I reached an understanding that those in power oppress the people, universally.

yes, sure, it is the CT nuts who have the more nuanced world view.... this is the guy who was sacked after he decided he'd rather become something akin to an Amnesty international spokesperson than a British Ambassador and (allegedly) filled the British Embassy in Uzbekistan full of attractive young women (some other allegations relating to that too). Oh and of course ruined his marriage after he decided to date a local girl half his age - she was working as a belly dancer and his first encounter with her was supposedly slipping a $20 note into her panties and giving her his phone number - classy guy!
She ditched him after he was sacked and moved back to the UK as it turns out the small flat he could afford on a civil servant's salary wasn't really as impressive as the British Ambassador's residence they were living in previously!

I realise that might come across as a cheap ad hominem towards the author of that article but the article is presented as being from a former British Ambassador (ergo someone with some inside knowledge/an expert etc..) whereas the above provides a bit more context as to why such a person is might be presenting rather unconventional CT-like views in the article.

But you don't suppose that this perhaps involves things like breaking into property, making use of forged documents etc.. rather than actually carrying out assassinations?

I would like to know how far they are authorized to go. What you gave as examples is a given but there may or may not be any "rather than".
