Former Russian double agent seriously ill in Salisbury.

There's a story floating out there that the scientist Mirzayanov claimed the formula for it is in his book that he published, which is apparently available on Amazon for $30 lol. It sounds completely bizarre and untrue and it cracked me up. But it's so bizarre I'm keeping an eye on it to find out more (like who is responsible for floating that story). Let me emphasize - in no way do I believe that is the truth. Just sharing it as one of the crazy anecdotes surrounding this whole story. The Daily Mail is now (kind of) commenting on it this morning, although they phrase it differently:

He did so first in the Russian media as it opened up with the collapse of the Soviet Union, and later, with chemical formulas at hand, in his book "State Secrets," published in 2007.

Jumping the gun and missing the point - Britain ought to be seen to be doing the right thing. You know, to actually be "the good guys", a shining light to the rest of the world. Proper procedure and all that. Unless you're a my country right or wrong person, which ensures the country will be very wrong in a very short space of time, when there's enough of that type.

I don't think allowing Russia to do what Russia does best would be the answer. Deny, deflect and discredit. The only option is to allow a third party to take a look at it. Maybe I haven't had the correct dosage of Russia Today, but I would tend to believe my own government over this, rather than the very party being accused.

This bothers me:

How is it that international communication between governments is being carried out via Twitter. wtf[/QUOTE

errrr of course it isnt.

But then people believe everything they see on the internet. It is all part of the disinformation and propaganda. Its an age old technique used throughout the ages.

It's actually true, I remember reading an article on it a decade ago. Of course in order for it to be any use to anyone unscrupulous they would need to have very high level degrees in science and access to a top level government laboratory.

I actually think that wouldn't be a bad idea. Although at the same time I can't see a valid reason why samples would not (also) be provided to Russia, given they have the damned thing anyway. Especially if this procedure is enshrined in existing rules. I mean it's not like ISIS is being accused (although they ought to be a suspect as well) and ISIS is cheekily saying: well, give us samples.

Yep, the Russian way seems to be just lie about everything. Even if your own officials have conflicting stories, maintain the lie.

No wonder Russia's only allies are tinpot dictators.

Well yes, of course it isn't, but a lot of information seems to be put out on Twitter that very much looks like it should be private between governments.

The formulas are essentially useless to anyone who isn't already working in government bioweapon R&D.

Right but if true then it's bloody available in a $30 Amazon book so basically any country with bioweapon facilities and with the scientists of enough calibre, can do it. That's what I find bizarre, that it would be allowed.

Simplest solution

Cancel the English football team going to the world cup, This has loads of benefits.

A - We do not have to listen about the world cup so much
B - We do not have to listen about England in the world cup so much
C - We do not have to listen to English football managers about losing to XXX team in the world cup
D - Russia loses out on lots of extra Cash
E - England fans do not get a good kick in by Russian mafia types (where is your tool...)
F - Less Football
G - Will not start a small war
H - Strong enough for the UK government

Its just so many wins.

It is not. The twitter spats are for the populous, for those who have no idea how international relations work and do not realise that an ultimate proposed in parliament is just posturing/show.

Officially Britain requested explanation from Russian within 24 hours and officially Russia said that this is not how things are done, the UK must use official channels to carry out a complaint where Russia can access the situation and come out with an official reply, which would probably be "not us".

Why have they not been given a sample?

I suspect we wouldn't be in a position to give a sample as we don't have one. Just results of chemical analysis of items recovered form the scene. I doubt the perpetrators left a big bottle of nerve agent hanging about for us to dish out samples of.

Sorry to be pedantic but nerve agents are chemical weapons, biological weapons are a different (but also banned) type of weapon - for example anthrax.
