Former Russian double agent seriously ill in Salisbury.

So the Germans are now part of the "Allies" strange ways this world turns sometimes.

It's not Allies in the WW2 context, it's Allies as in allies of the United Kingdom. I can see why the headline on that BBC article could be confusing though.

I'm not finding it confusing - just a little weird to see it put in that context given the historical usage of Allies and that most of the articles have mention of WW2 right beneath ("first offensive use of a nerve agent in Europe since the Second World War" in the case of the BBC).

Figures, there's no way to combat the nerve agents but the government knows 99% of voters don't know the difference between Novichok/Anthrax/Ricin/Sarin/etc so they can waste money on doing pointless stuff and all the uneducated voters will see is them doing something positive in response.

Eh? I don't think it is pointless. Also what do you think the epipens soldiers carry in their respirator pouch are for, they cover several nerve agents.

I have no idea what this has to do with WWII. Did you vote Brexit? Do you live in 1945 or 2018? How old are you? Do you not remember the Cold War?

They've been one of our allies for over 60 years...

The sad thing in all this is pre-2006ish Russia looked like they were finally moving forward and were really trying to become part of Europe. At one point the UK was even thinking about discussing a defense agreement with them. Then Litvinenko happened and they started with all the lies and miss-information crap again like the soviet era.

I wonder how many Russians actually back Putin. We all know the elections are faked so it's hard to tell what his support public is like.

They really don't want to be on the wrong side of history AGAIN :D

Putin's backing/approval is quite misleading when you see it in figures because wheras approval for most leaders can be marked as them doing well or doing badly, Putin's approval figures are generally just an indicator of how viable any competition is.

Put simply, he doesn't have overwhelming support (even though polls sometimes show his approval as high as 80%) what he has is "meh, nobody better" support. While more popular than Yeltsin was he's actually a lot less popular than Medvedev was.

If you look at his track record, in the three presidential elections he has stood in his share of the vote was 53.4%, 71.9% and 63.6%. It seems his popularity is directly linked to the credibility of the opposition. By comparison Medvedev managed to win with 71.2% against much tougher opponents than Putin did when he got a 71.9% share. When he won in 2000 he had comparable voter support to Theresa May in 2017.

It's kind of striking that Russia have 8 candidates standing in this presidential election (a record) and yet 15% of voters polled said they didn't want to elect any of the candidates (NB: That doesn't necessarily mean they won't vote, as least worst is still the best choice in that situation).

It isn't exactly that often they are grouped in as "Allies" in that context in a big headline though.

I can't believe some people are taking away from my post that somehow I didn't know we'd been allies for the last few decades... it isn't like I post frequent content concerning the EU and NATO and so on or anything.

The response is eerie. "We've always been allies with Eastasia," sort of thing.

Well for the majoriy of people alive today we have always been allies with the germans.

Same as for many we'e always been allies with France despite litterally centuries of warfare between us.

So why did Russia do it? I mean, use a nerve agent which can be traced back to them? Why not use something more conventional and less traceable? Assuming they wanted to rattle cages in the west?

Hmm maybe my perspective is a bit different - obviously I know we've been allies for decades but I've spent many hours playing games like Day of Defeat, Enemy Territory, the original COD, etc. not to mention countless war movies (though I suspect so have many).

Have you ever lived a single day where we were not allies with the Germans?

Cause if not do you not find it worrying that your perceprion of reality has been so skewed by games?

Really? Playing computer games and watching films has made you think it's weird when Germany is referred to as a British ally?

Good god man, get a grip of yourself.
