Former Russian double agent seriously ill in Salisbury.

Ex-Russian spies drop like flies in suspicious circumstances to unknown substances and people are still in denial.

thing is, what exactly can we do about it? it's not like we're going to go to war because one of our spies (or one of their traitors, whichever way you want to look at it) is taken out, and milder sanctions don't really concern russia that much.

Freeze more personal assets of Putin's mates I guess.

Are you at least going to hold your bff responsible for any innocent bystanders and emergency service workers caught up in this? Or is that ok too, just their fault for getting in the way of Russia's justifiable attack within our country?

collateral damage. If this was the other way and the UK ran a black op to off a treasonous betrayer in deepest Moscow and few reds went down no one would bat an eyelid from this country.

We didn't assassinate anyone even during World War 2, but you think the UK government would do that now and there would be no outrage if we actually killed civilians in Moscow?

I think the main issue here is your perception of the world is rather detached from reality.

It never is the other way round because we don't do stuff like this

It's quite naive to presume our government doesn't partake in any covert and clandestine operations on foreign soil

And the comment from @Roar87 about no assassinations during WW2

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/mi6-chief-ran-secret-39m-fund-for-black-ops-m5pl80pks

The head of MI6 ran a secret slush fund in the late 1940s that was used for bribes, black propaganda and plans to assassinate foreign officials, according to documents in the National Archives.

And if you want it from the horses mouth

https://publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200809/cmhansrd/cm090428/text/90428w0012.htm

“Consistent with the practice since annual reporting by the respective statutory Commissioners began, I do not propose to disclose publicly the numbers of warrants or authorisations issued to the security and intelligence services. That is because it would assist those unfriendly to the UK were they able to know the extent of the work of the Security Service, SIS and GCHQ in fulfilling their functions. The figures are, however, of interest and have been included in the confidential annex to the report.”

Don't kid yourselves if you think the UK has clean hands in this glorified game of chess

Snowden?

I mean there's an espionage fund but no actual links to people the UK government has supposedly assassinated

Exactly. People kicked off about civilians accidentally getting hurt by UK troops in warzones. There is no way UK agents go and bump people off in foreign cities, it just doesn't happen.

Russia do it and then deny it, but it's blatantly obvious they did it. Just shows the difference in thinking. No one except Russians, their troll factory and gullible people believe them.

[tinfoilhat] or maybe our guys just don't get caught?[/tinfoilhat]

So what you're saying is that SOE didn't plan, train the operatives and covertly assist in carrying out Operation Anthropoid, the assassination of Heydrich? And I bet the RAF didn't fly the operatives into country either.

Evidently not because even at the height of the cold war, spies like Burgess and Philby, who utterly betrayed our British Intelligence lived for years and years in Russia without being murdered

Anyway Russia loves a bit of whataboutism, no way they would keep it quiet if we did

That's literally the only example you'll find, where we trained some Czechs, but we didn't do it ourselves. Assassination generally isn't committed by the UK government. The Russians are basically led by a gangster still living in the cold war era

Lets be honest, Putin could dangle his love spuds in the queens mouth and we wouldn't do anything serious. Just going to result in another costly investigation that says "yes, its almost 100% certain that Russia killed them on Putins orders".

Report will take 8 years and cost 12million
