Former Russian double agent seriously ill in Salisbury.

Its surprising how many of them there are around I've met a few of them too some of them very unpleasant characters.

Most of the ones that move here are not Putin supporters, but they bring their culture with them. Which involves the whole macho man act. They aren't actually bad people.

The real reason we know there is a good chance this was probably state backed is because they haven't identified the specific nerve agent yet which could mean it's something rare/new.

It appears they know what it is:

Police said government scientists had identified the nerve agent used, but would not make that information public at this stage.

No exceptions? Gareth Williams and the ensuing ludicrous cover-up springs to mind. Let's not forget David Kelly, either. Sure, someone else may have killed them, and we'll likely never know the truth about it. But MI5 is authorized to commit crimes on UK territory, and everything about this remains hush. Interesting how a fair number of spy/ex-spy poisonings and deaths take place in Britain though. If they are telling the truth, then it means they're pretty incompetent, what with Russian hit-squads waltzing in and out all the time taking out whoever they like, without MI5 preventing it, or presenting conclusive evidence of it, after the fact. But that would be a very big "if".

Gareth Williams was suspected of being killed by Russia. I'm pretty sure even the US recognise that.
David Kelly...suicide wasn't it?

If I was an spy/ex spy, I would have a body cam on me at all times and fit my flat out with hidden cameras, at least the killers would be seen then, not that it would result in much however.

Why bother with all the 'theatre' of using a nerve agent though, when a simple stabbing, hammer, or even 'accidental overdose' would draw much less attention.

Because it sends a very clear message- we will find you, and when we do we will kill you.

Pretty much this. Given the clear broadcasts from Russian state media I think it's very obvious they're not trying to hide the fact it was them as they simply don't fear any reprisals because there probably won't be any.

We will send our worst footie team to your match, oh wait, we already do that.

Also they have the new Sarmat unstoppable nuclear missile.

Nerve agents including Sarin and VX are manufactured by the British Government in Porton Down, just 8 miles from where Sergei Skripal was attacked.

The UK media universally accepted that the production of polonium by Russia was conclusive evidence that Vladimir Putin was personally responsible for the murder of Alexander Litvinenko. In the case of Skripal, po-faced articles like this hilarious one in the Guardian speculate about where the nerve agent could possibly have come from – while totally failing to mention the fact that incident took place only eight miles from the largest stock of nerve agent in western Europe.

It's amazing what people believe without any evidence. The MSM always tells the truth though, right?
