As your earnings are not relative to the cost of fuel the absolute price is important.Why? Diesel is also coming down in price at the same rate as petrol too, i'm not going to be forking out changing my car to a petrol to still save ~5p /l as always. I still do over 16k miles a year so diesel is still beneficial to me.

Oh that's exactly what I mean. Guy at work has bought a brand new C Class diesel. For commuting 7 miles each way and no lengthy weekend jaunts.
