Fuel up/down again

Hopefully all the idiots buying diesels for small mileages may start seeing sense and switch over to petrols.

Why? Diesel is also coming down in price at the same rate as petrol too, i'm not going to be forking out changing my car to a petrol to still save ~5p /l as always. I still do over 16k miles a year so diesel is still beneficial to me.

As your earnings are not relative to the cost of fuel the absolute price is important.
 
I think the gap has increased in both pence (nearly 10p now?) and even more so by %. The diesel savings are a lot smaller than they used to be. The annual mileage whereby a diesel costs less just got higher.
 
It's not percentage which matters. It's the abolsute difference.

If petrol was 5p and diesel was 7p is it the percentage or 2p difference which is more important?

Your extra diesel car costs are in fixed £ amounts, isn't proportional to the price of diesel.

Maybe I haven't explained it very well.

If a diesel car costs £x more and £y more to maintain, the percentage saving of diesel price/mpg versus petrol isn't important. It is the absolute amount saved which is required to offset £x and £y.

£x and £y arent changing with the price of diesel.

Oh that's exactly what I mean. Guy at work has bought a brand new C Class diesel. For commuting 7 miles each way and no lengthy weekend jaunts.
 
Arent the government going to be coming down hard on Diesels soon, after they finally realised co2 isnt the only and most damaging substance a car can emit?
 
I think peoples perception of what constitutes high annual mileage is completely skewed. They know diesels are intended for those doing loads of miles but in their mind because they use their car every day for work, they do a lot of miles, even if it does only work out to about 5k per year. Even if they do the sums and work out their true annual mileage, a lot will assume anything more than a few thousand a year is classed as high as they have no real sense of scale.
