Hmm, I've run my car almost exclusively on Shell VPN+ Since I've had it but I'm beginning to hate the constant 8p difference when Tesco manage with a 4 or 5p difference. There's no Tesco close to my house but there is one not far from my Ex's where I am every weekend. Has anyone noticed a significant difference between the Momentum and VPN+ in their car? I have a Leon Cupra 180 1.8T.

I've read a lot of forum posts where some people say yes they can tell the difference and the same amount who say there's no difference.

The only thing I could glean from looking around (iirc) is that M99 uses more ethanol to achieve 99 Ron and VP has more cleaning agents in it.

I can't testify to the accuracy of that though.

The only difference is that Shell operate a franchise and a very, very small amount of stations may occasionally fill the V-Power tank with 95 on purpose instead and people who've filled their cars have seen the difference on a dyno with poor running, Det etc. This is very rare though I'd have thougt, I only know of 3 cars in 2 years.

Tesco on the other hand are not a franchise and rarely have any issues with fuel quality due to the above actions.

For me the nearest Shell is 15 miles closer to where I live/work than a Tesco with 99RON so I use Shell.

No difference here in performance, though the engine sounds smoother with Momentum perhaps? Maybe I'm imagining it... The talked about plus of V Power has always been that it uses more detergents to clean the engine and fuelling components thus prolonging engine health. I don't know how accurate this is today if this is what it used to be back in the day?

Edit* one person elsewhere said:

I'm not 100% sure (and await to be corrected), but I don't think V Power has anywhere near as much bio-ethanol in it which is known to rot seals.

Seems fair...

Both Momentum and Vpower Nitro+ are 99.

Intriguing.

What happens when the tanker driver fills the tanks? The tanker driver isn't part of the franchise so has no reason to get involved with swapping fuel etc?

Wow, thats quite an allegation. What you are suggesting is illegal. On what grounds do you make such a scathing claim, surely not 'how the car feels' alone?

Of course the bit of info you miss is that the franchise does not own the fuel, While the shop goods is franchise , the fuel is Shell's. Hence why you sometimes have 2 VAT numbers of the receipts.

Indeed the tanker driver does not work for the franchise or the oil company.

I filled up with BP boggo 95 unleaded at 102.9 this evening.

Saved £3 over my usual tank full of Momentum 99. I will be trying to see whether there might be any difference in MPG between the two over a ~150 mile route I know.

Always used Momentum99, Shell is quite a bit dearer and I don't experience any difference.

On the topic of pump fuel, why do we not get E85 over here? Been reading a lot of stuff out of Aus about SR tuning and E85 is very popular there. They are making way more power on corn juice over 98 unleaded, it's almost unbelievable.
