Fuel up/down again

Lets not. Rather than looking at commuter villages around large cities, lets look at ones further away with no direct transport links, communities of people who are classed as rural.

Are you suggesting they should all move to the city?

No, I am suggesting the taxpayer should not subsidise petrol costs for them alone.

I support wholescale reform of the fuel duty system but not selective reform for certain people only, where qualification depends on where you choose to live. Yes, CHOOSE to live. They are not banned from living in cities. There are numerous people living in cities, however, having trouble with fuel prices as well.

This is just the thing with society isnt it? People always claim they have no choice. People in Africa living in huts have no choice - people in a developed western nation have every choice where they live and work, they just dont like the fact those choices involve compromise.

While I am not disagreeing with you that the discount/lower taxation should be nationwide rather than just rural areas, a lot of people in rural areas do not have the access in terms of schooling/training or back ground to be able to simple shift to go to a city.

I'm not suggesting 'lol they should just move, lolololol'. I'm pointing out that it was and is a choice. A difficult choice, sure, but it's a choice.

It's a choice most of us will not want to make because moving to the city may involve an inferior house, living in a less nice area or perhaps taking a far more mundane job. But the fact its a sucky choice doesnt stop it being just that - a choice.

And choices should not receive special treatment from the government.

Everyone is having issues with fuel prices, and the issues are caused by taxation.

I blame the previous team Labour. They had plenty of time to get the country in tip top shape. Now its starting to fall apart.

Whats next huh.......... China to take over the world....!?

My understanding was that they were going to try to lower the pump prices at fuel stations in the rural areas because their prices are generally much higher. I filled up at Morrisons on Fri morning in Edinburgh at 122.9 by the time I got to Grangemouth the BP garage right outside the refinery was showing 129.9

If you don't have a supermarket near you then you will be shafted...

Around here it's ~122.9 but In Glasgow I've saw 128.9 and maybe even 129.9. It's a bit nuts really.

Add to the fact that the roads are so bad the fascia of my headunit fell off due to a crater in the road.

I don't know anyone who lives in the more rural area of West Wales crying into their designer breakfast bowl over wanting to live in the city/town.

Its a status symbol to live in the rural villages - it was the same when I lived in Oxfordshire and its the same in Pembrokeshire. And although farmers may complain about being squeezed you will find that the majority aren't exactly broke, they just have short arms for their deep pockets.

Rural houses are more expensive than town houses here. I prefer town. It would drive me nuts to have to drive 15 minutes for a pint of milk.

haha

Where did you live in oxfordshire out of interest? :) We did the move the other way - hook, pembrokeshire over to henley-on-thames, oxfordshire.

I know Hook :) Now that is rural!

Not so posh as Henley I'm afraid. Witney to Haverfordwest. One market town to another.

I love Pembrokeshire and its a lovely place to being up kids but it is a bit out of the way :)

I live in rural Aberdeenshire , and the only way I can get to the shop and get to work via a 80 mile round trip is by car and I've had to pay 1.35 for a litre of fuel absolutely ridiculous. After all Aberdeen is the oil capital of Europe why should we pay the most in the UK?

We were there due to Oil activities, as close as you can get to them whilst staying away from the "lovely place" that is Milford Haven :p Not been to hook for years, we lived right at the end of lower quay road on the estuary. Not wrong about it being that little bit far, i wouldnt personally want to move out there again until possibly retirement years.

Still got my welsh language birth certificate and driving license with haverfordwest on it to show for our time there :p

You can say refinery - its not a dirty word :) Well it is if it rains and the wind is in the wrong direction. :D

It never makes sense that the Texaco in Haverfordwest is one of the most expensive stations in town yet the refinery is about 15 miles away.

Well, until someone tries it for a 1-2 week period, I guess we will never know exactly how much.

Just as a matter of interest, a few days ago I stuck £50 in rather than the £20-£25 I usually do and today was the first day i've driven to work and seen 30MPG displayed on the OBC, usually I see around 26-28 depending on how many lights i stop at / traffic.

I've not really been driving any differently to usual either, I just thought it was quite amusing that my economy figures seem to have gone up by a couple of MPG rather than down :p
