Game Activation Uproar

sid said:
I think when you install the game, it gets one of the activations back.

So you can't have the game concurrently installed on more than 2 separate pcs. You'd have to uninstall one to get it to activate on the third.

So does that mean you have to ensure you uninstall your copy of the game before you format/replace a HDD/component/PC blows up in order to retrieve your next activation?

Or does it mean that when you install it on a new system does it deactivate it on the old one? (which begs the question, what happens if someone else gets thier hands on your cd key?)

So is bioshock not both then......what do people do, Publishers are in a no win situation if thats the rule

Here have this Game X, its the best game you will ever play ever OMG!!
BTW we have 1 little bit of copy protection that you will never bother you,
Still want it?
I said encourages and discourages. What's the 'rule'? Its just how it sways the thinking on whether a game is worth buying or not.

I think is was clear with how people stopped buying games with Starforce because it could cause optical drive slow down.

Ok fair enough,

but theres no rampant piracy going on which does proove to an extent that this copy protection has worked.

LOL for some of us Starforce caused a few more problems than "optical drive slow-down." :(

It's up. :p It'll be even more up in the next couple of days, like everywhere you look up.

All because they put one little limit in the code that doesn't even affect pirates in the slightest.

But it doesnt effect 99% of legit buyers either just the ones that moan
cause they think they are being violated somehow

This thread has minutes to live with some of the stuff getting thrown around in it now

the former is correct, not the latter.

So if it affects 0% of pirates and 1% of legitimate buyers, why put it in?

To inconvenience 1% of legitimate buyers?

By the time this sort of DRM comes to affect 99% of users, it will be too late to complain.

Im not saying its right, it is pointless but why we need a 6 page thread with people canceling orders and words like scandal and uproar in it i will never know, its a non issue.

Will it be a non-issue when more publishers accept this method?

lol, you weren't an Windows X64 user were you? No end of grief from Starforce for that, managed to make buying the games hideously unattactive and piracy a good idea.

Its a scandal because its not a small inconvenience of activation theres other problems like 2 hardware config simultaneously which we weren't told of before.

TBH the sun should a story on this tomorrow.lol

Nope I was on XP 32-bit at the time. I lost an optical drive (after having re-enable it in BIOS a couple of times) and apparently I wasn't allowed to install some games because I had Alcohol 120% on my hard disk.

I'm not into the idea of companies telling me that I'm not allowed to do legal things with a piece of software I own, which is my issue with copy protection as a whole. Especially this sort of "activation" garbage.

considering i have no issues with this method then yes if more publishers accept this method then it will still be a non-issue.
It would bug me if I had 5, 10, 20, or even more games on my hard disk that I know would "lose" one out of two activations if my HDD or mobo went bang. How long until an even sillier method comes out?

Just out of curiosity, has the game even been cracked and pirated yet? And how much of a pain is it to use the cracking or pirating methods?

I only ask because everyone is saying that any anti-piracy methods will be ineffectual, when that simply is not the case. Not all anti-piracy methods can be easily bypassed. Sure the majority I know of have been cracked eventually, but you have to jump through many hoops to even get the game to start up, and that doesnt guarantee it will stay stable (see operation flashpoint).

Another example would be some Ubisoft games. The copy protection on those means that a lot of people actually have to physically disconnect any CD/DVD drives on their computer and have all sorts of software running in the background before they can get a cracked version to work.

I am not planning on pirating the game, after playing the demo i placed an order on **** straight away. I'm only pointing these things out because so many of you are saying that copy protection only ever inconveniences legitimate customers and the pirates never have a problem at all, when that is not the case at all.

Put it simple without getting my self into trouble, you name me a game that has trouble being pirated and i'll tell you its the person using the pirate software.
