Geforce GTX1180/2080 Speculation thread

The 2080 has to beat the 1080Ti. If it doesn't, and convincingly enough, the 19th will see a flood of pre-order cancellations and within a few days you won't be able to find a 1080Ti for love or money lol! I know Nvidia want to clear out old stock, but that would be a step too far haha! :D

Reviews will not be able to test RTX, obviously, as there is nothing to test it with... therefore people will initially be making a purchasing decision SOLELY on the basis of the raw performance of these cards in current games and what the benchmarks on these show. If the 2080 is level pegging with the 1080Ti, but for £150 more, you'd have to be a complete fool to buy one. Even die-hard Nvidia fanboys won't be able to swallow that one. Nvidia will know this and the bashing they will get in the tech press and over damage to their reputation will be immense. I don't see why they would do that to themselves, they're just not that stupid. I'm quite sure we will see the 2080 beat the 1080Ti just enough to justify its purchase.


I agree but looking at the spec sheets i just don't see how the 2080 is going to be meaningfully faster then the 1080ti in raw performance.

Memory Bus: 352bit
Memory Bandwidth: 484GB/s

2080 Specs
Cuda Cores: 2944
Vram: 8GB
Memory Bus: 256bit
Memory Bandwidth: 448GB/s

Its worse in every category so the only way it can make up the difference in specs is through clock speed. It will probably compare well against a stock 1080ti but once both are overclocked there will be nothing in it.

Valid, but specs don't always quite tell the full story. We shall just have to wait and see what the benchmarks show.

2080 has GDDR6 and likely bit more performance per core. Also it all comes down to how the tensor cores get used. Otherwise it is all a sad reality to face. I am getting troubled with all this delay on reviews and now perhaps delay on actually receiving the card.

Its a difference architecture and arrangement under the hood.

Comparing the specs alone doesn't tell the whole story. Its how they've optimised the pathways that counts.

My 10 cuda cores are better than your 11 cuda cores because of the way I've arranged them and plumbed it together.

Take that into account and you think you're looking at something relatively on par
 
DLSS sounds like it could reduce some of the overhead on the CUDA cores. If that is the case, it should increase our framerates. But maybe game devs may see that by implementing it, it frees up that extra graphical power that can be put to good use elsewhere, helping to increase the visual fidelity of our games further. May see decent uptick as a result?

From what we know at the moment DLSS has to be done on a game by game basis. On their supercomputer they take a low resolution version of the game and make it look as good as possible. Those instructions are sent to your computer and your new turing card using it's Tensors cores displays the game.

We know it works for 4k but does it also work for lower resolutions?

I think long term Ray Tracing is the best bet of really noticeable graphics improvement.
 
And have you watched the interview with Tom Petersen? You should watch it. Especially watch the way he dodges the question when asked is the 2080 faster than the 1080ti in normal games. His answer. I think it will be faster in some games but I don't have my info at hand. Yes, right, as if he doesn't know exactly what the performance will be.

Nice work trimming out most of what he says and presenting on sentence... He hardy dodged it given he spent a fair amount of time answering it. He says quite reasonably that if you are already crushing frame rates at smaller res on older titles it’s unlikely to give huge % gains as it’s just not there to give pretty much. He’s says I don’t have the figures to hand when asked very specific direct number questions. Many more things in his answer that you decided to list.

This is so far from explaining what DLSS is actually doing it’s silly.

RTX is also completely different technology so not even comparable, DLSS is what will more than likely improve the frame rates you are all banging on about. Based on the content of this thread I think that might be what improves the experience more...
 
I'm expecting roughly 10%, but it'd be nice for buyers to get more :)
IF 2080 is 10% faster than 1080ti (ie both running at stock speeds OR both running overclocked to the max so like for like) I will be relieved..... Happy... And unfortunately surprised. Without using DLSS or RTX I think the rtx2080 is going to be in for a tough ride on benchmarks of older games

As has been said already, it is a different architecture than Pascal, in fact it could be argued that it is two generations on from Pascal, with Volta in the middle and we still know next to nothing about the way the architecture has evolved from Volta/Pascal.

I will remain optimistic, but Lets wait and see.

Nvidia gets an early build of games, Uses a supercomputer to make a super high res render of the game and then attempt to recreate that image quality using a low resolution version. The super computer "learns" how to do this and that result is saved. That Training data is either used by the developers of the game or sent to you in real time as you play, well that's eventually.

RTX has nothing to with DLSS I know this, I was answering Xenon, and just stating that Ray Tracing is going to bring the most graphical improvements going forward.

Well I hope it is faster than that for your sake. It's an expensive upgrade and hope that buyers get a proper boost in performance in all games. But 10% over the 1080ti isn't that great either, will 10% be even noticeable in most games?

as a 1080ti owner, I wouldn't be interested in getting the 2080, if I didn't have a 1080ti and was coming from something older then maybe it would be a toss up between getting a 1080ti and a 2080, so as they are broadly similar prices, if its a consistent 10% faster plus has RTX and DLSS then it becomes a more interesting choice, if its slower than a 1080ti then thats a different choice entirely

What are even talking about? If it’s 10% faster on standard titles good, plus on titles using DLSS (given the clout of Nvidia that’s many in future) anything up to 2x faster. £100 premium on a 1080Ti for that isn’t bad.
