Geforce GTX1180/2080 Speculation thread

Stepped up their game when they were busy developing ryzen and that's where the lions share of the resources were going. How exactly could they have stepped up their game? You can only go with what you've got.

Yes, that is obviously where they decided to focus their spending, which they started quite a few years ago (Ryzen was about 4-5 years in development I believe). We did see VEGA during that time though, so they obviously didn't completely ignore the GPU market, but in hindsight it's clear that challenging Nvidia at the top end was never really on their radar, and probably beyond their ability, certainly financially speaking anyway. I just hope we see that change in the future... it will be good for everyone, just as Ryzen's success has proven.

Imo Vega still has a hell of a lot of potential, only have to look at the likes of Wolfenstein to see that! I'm personally hoping to see that potential realised with more and more next-gen API games being released (esp Vulkan ones) :)

I'm not sure who this card is aimed at. It wont run 4K/ultra consistently. (And don't start saying "my 1080 runs 4K at Ultra just fine). No. No it doesn't. I've tried 4K across 30 of my games and only a handful ran at over 50FPS even knocking back some settings.
And the 1080/1080Ti smash 1440p no problem.

So who is this card for?

i must admit before Ryzen launched I thought AMD were done for at the top end of the cpu market. with hindsite how foolish that was.

I hope AMD repeat this in the gpu market, however i do think it wont be next generation, maybe the one after.

imo the 1180ti is the card which will be the 1st generally proper 4k 60 full detail card.

if the 1180 is only ~10% quicker than a 1080ti then it still wont quite be enough..... as for who is the card for.... well not for 1080ti owner that is for sure..

but maybe for those owners who made the unfortunate decision (with hindsite) to skip the 10X generation and are still on a maxwell card <raises hand, that would be me!>.

whilst the 1180ti is the card i want, i simply cannot wait much longer, esp now i have a 4k telly. (which to make things worse is awfully laggy at 1080p)...

Hopefully the 1180 will see me through to the 1280ti (or maybe something from AMD)

That's why i went 1440p, just a bonus if i can take advantage of the high refresh rate. Smooth and high quality, can just up nearly everything to full details without worries.

The 1170 will likely be a great 1440p card and am interested in seeing the numbers.. Still bugger all yet.

Not. Everyone. Needs. Max. Settings.

I don't think we will see that until at least "1280Ti" (And even then only if AMD up their game. And that would be for CURRENT games. Not the games released in 2019/20/21

If it’s 25-30% faster than a 1080Ti it should do just fine. It’ll certainly do me for a few years at least and be a massive step up from my RX480.

Well not everyone is like you mate. We don't just leave every slider on the highest possible. Sure most games won't come to close on working on 4K if you max out everything and 8x anti aliasing or whatever. But not everyone needs that much anti aliasing at 4K.

I had a 1080 and it run majority of my games perfectly fine. Only the most demanding titles of recent struggled a little even after optimising my settings. I agree it is not a 4K card, but 1080Ti or something a little beefier should run 4K no problem for me once I optimise settings :D

Edit:

Just to give you an example, for Deus Ex Mankind Divided I did this:

MSAA OFF, Shadow set to HIGH, Contact Hardening OFF, Depth of Field OFF, Motion Blur OFF, Chromatic Aberration OFF

The difference in IQ between this and everything on maximum could barely be seen, but my fps more than doubled as I recall. The game still looked better on 4K with those settings as opposed to having those setting maxed out at 1440p anyway.

So who is the card for? Those of us who did not get the 1080Ti who have been waiting for new cards? Others who are still on 900 series cards? So many people really. Hell, there will be people in here upgrading their 1080Ti's to 1180.

Your mileage must be different to mine then. I gave up after trying to run FC5 and RUST at 4K. Just no chance. even on Low.

Then. Why. Need. Top. End. Card.

Seriously though, who drops £800 on a GPU and is happy to lower settings? Must just be a me thing.

No it’s not. That’s the only reason I’ll wait for the next Ti, so I won’t need to drop settings on much hopefully.

I just couldn't bring myself to spend ~£800 on a GPU. The "best in the world". And have to make graphical compromises. It would end me. That's the price of a half decent car with a years MOT! But we are all different. I would say it's most likely a flaw of mine.
Hence I won't move up a resolution until I can blindly "run everthin' on ultra innit". I'll sit at 1440p until I'm confident a GPU can run 4K ultra >75FPS in at LEAST 90% of recent / new games. I dare say if AMD had been on point providing solid competition for the last 5 or 6 years we might actually be close to that point now. But they havent. And we arent.

Have you formatted your computer lately? Not tried those games in truth, also what I find acceptable and enjoyable is not the same as others. Some games I am happy with even 30fps and having g-sync helps. Other people need minimum 144fps or they will call it a slideshow otherwise.

It is not just you, many feel the need to max out settings. But if you did a bit of research or played about with settings you would see that in many games going from say very high to ultra may make little to no difference to IQ while playing, but the impact on fps can be huge. Not saying it is like that for every game, but in my experience many games it is.

Guess which has much better IQ, ultra at 1440p or very high at 4K?

As I always say each to their own though. If you need minimum 75fps on latest games and everything maxed out then best stay at 1440p until at least 7nm cards at the very least. These new cards won’t be for you for sure.

I want a 60fps minimum but I’ll happily drop AA at 4K if I have to. It’s not really needed at that res.
Yeah of course. My AA was set to 2x during my testing. (I found some still needed). Genuinely I struggled to find ANY title that ran well at 4K ultra. The only modern game was Doom. That ran really nicely at 4K. But all the other games didn't. I see so much BS of people saying things like "Yeah I get min 75FPS in GTAV everything Ultra 4K". Really?? Try running through the wilderness with ULTRA grass and a sunset while getting chased by the cops. That will make your card cry at 4K. Even a Titan V. And Ultra grass does actually look a lot better than high grass. So it's not a simple case of "turn it down and you won't notice the visual difference". It's a huge visual difference.

but then 4K is also a huge visual difference (if you game on a big enough screen) - though that said HDR is by far the best visual upgrade my new gaming telly gives me, more so than resolution.

It is a shame we are having to do a balancing act between resolution, settings and framerate. in the future we will be able to dial all up to 11 and game but cards are not quite there yet.

(then 8 or 16k screens will be out and the dance will start again - however that said, I dont see me itching to go over 4K any time soon!)
