Geforce GTX1180/2080 Speculation thread

I played it maxed out 21-22fps. These days a lot of people moan unless they get minimum 144fps. Lol. I am still happy playing some games 30fps with all the 4K goodness. I will probably be doing that with Cyberpunk 2077. But I know a game like StarCitizen will need 60fps to be enjoyable. It just depends from game to game.

I can’t enjoy any game below 40fps. I’ve been playing on a 60fps panel for years with a 980, because monitor tech just wasn’t good enough. I got an ASU’s (pg27UQ?) anyway it was a 144Hz, 1440p, gsync panel and I hated it. Awful glow and it felt more smeary than my ageing dell panel. It went back and I returned to 16:10 goodness.

I had higher frame rates but the compromise wasn’t worth it. Anything 60 and above is fine imo, but I can’t wait for a UW or 4K panel with all the new trimmings like FALD, HDR AND Quantum Dot. Then I’ll bite; It’ll be a luxury not a necessity.

I find it weird when people can play below 40 and have an enjoyable experience. Unless you’re a few feet away on an ‘optimised’ console. With gsync it’s fine but without it feels choppy and awful. We’re definitely spoilt today, but a minimum of 50 is where it’s at imo. Different horses for different courses I guess.

But in the case of Crysis you needed the best there was available in SLI. There was no need to do research to know that, it was that ahead of its time. Wish more games were made like that.

Crysis was fine at lower framerates, due to some of the stuff they implemented(apparently) and I suspect Crytek was favouring frametimes over pure FPS.

I would check out the DF video on Crysis which they did recently, and it seems Crytek actually did optimise the game in certain ways,as it was doing stuff which is even uncommon today.

Looking at what CDPR are planning for the game, unless it gets downgraded,it required a GTX1080TI at 1080p apparently to get 30FPS:

Before people thought it was running at 4K,apparently it wasn't. I expect it might be the next Crysis especially if it is being developed for next gen consoles too,ie,the PS5 and next XBox.

You find it weird because you assume everyone processes and perceives things the way you do. Which is not the case imo. Also it really does make a big difference what game you are playing. Like Crysis was perfectly fine at 30fps for me. But try playing Street Fighter 5 or some racing game under 60fps and suddenly it is not enjoyable. That has been my experience anyway.

In truth I do understand those who want minimum 100fps or whatever, as they play games which benefit from it more and they have become accustomed to it. It has happened to me with 4K, now I find it hard to use anything less for example as I see the pixels and things are not sharp. It does however make me laugh though when people suggest anything under 100 fps is unplayable though. Those who say that either are very young and never experienced old games which were very low fps yet very enjoyable, don’t understand that different people experience things slightly different or they are just being a snob imo.

As a very early, even pre-alpha game it would be severely unoptimised. I very much doubt it will require a 1080ti to get 30FPS at 1080p at launch. To do so would be commercial suicide as it will severely limit sales.

Just thinking ahead, and I guess it's still more in-topic than most stuff here: if I pre-order something I won't be charged until it's about to be shipped, right?
Some places are very unethical and charge immediately. There's nothing, not even any word or RRP or release date yet. You'd be crazy to consider pre-ordering.

Not if it is true next gen and they push graphics. The Witcher 3 demo videos were better than the game we got,and apparently it was downgraded graphically. If the game is being developed with next generation consoles in mind,I expect it will be made with 7NM GPUs in mind too.

So it is why I would not get a card for the game, until closer to launch to see what it needs in a better optimised form.

I’ll leave it there as you seem very hyped up about it for some reason. People can enjoy games however they want. Nothing makes anyone else’s opinions any more or less valid.

Considering I’ve been gaming for over 20 years I’d say my judgement is fairly balanced as to what’s reasonable.

On topic I’m definitely sitting in the ‘do not pre-order yet’ camp. However if I see hard facts on performance I’ll probably pre-order the ti. I’d rather enjoy it immediately and watch prices eventually fall, than wait and watch them skyrocket due to demand or mining resurgence.

As for games, I never, ever pre-order. There’s no guarantees a game will be what you’re hoping for, even if the premise and developers are your personal vision of the perfect game. I’ve asked why people do it and have accepted their reasoning, but it’s definitely not for me.

I don't see the 1170 being less than £450.

If there was ever a time where nV could charge (almost) whatever they wanted, now is it.#

They have no competition.

People who say, "We'll remember this price gouging, and we'll punish nV for it!" are just venting. They will immediately go and buy a new nV card each and every time they release a new gen, and they'll pay whatever it takes to get one.

Frankly there's only a handful of people who have any self restraint whatsoever in this community :p

But if you need top end hardware to get even 30fps at 1080p then it will limit sales. Imagine a game now launching requiring a 1080/1080ti for even 30fps at 1080p. We're enthusiasts, we have top end hardware. The majority don't so it won't sell, at least on PC anyway. You'll get 60 FPS in every game at 1080p with a 970/980 still these days.

Can’t argue with this really. I’d say I have minimal restraint, but not much. And only because I’ll have held off upgrading for 4 to 5 years.

I’ll buy whatever’s best at the time I want to buy, even if NV is by many peoples’ standards a douchey company.

Depends on settings though. If the game still looks great at low settings and will hit 50 to 60 on mid tier I don’t think it would be a big detractor.

When the Witcher 3 came out it kicked my 980s ass at 1200p ultra. Still looked good turned down.

Concur, unfortunately the GPU teams on both sides have had a great couple of years milking the status quo and hiding behind the 'parts are expensive ' excuse. Nobody minds paying inflated prices for cutting edge newness with considerable performance, however dragging out releases or even refreshing the same tech is getting pathetic now. Good job I only ever upgrade this department around every four years now, not in a hurry.

Giving Nvidia your money is the tech equivalent of giving your kids to James Saville to babysit, ie a terrible idea :D

That douchey enough for ya :P

I don't know if you were around last gen.

From the date an AIB card is available for pre-order, to the date that card actually ships, you have
to go through at least a month of delays and various reps on forums around the world giving
updates on tiny shipments which are about to leave their factories.

If I don't pre-order I won't see anything for months (not even exaggerating), plus we all know how
various coolers of different companies perform, don't really need reviews, besides the ones for the FE.

If there was a way to Pre-order a Asus Strix 1180 today, I would pull the trigger.
We all know it will be about 20% faster than 1080ti and also know how good that cooler is (just an example).
There are 0 surprises to be had when there's no competition (and when you followed the industry for 15 years).
