Gigabyte DS3/DS4/DQ6 Guide

can someone just point me in the correct direction please

Got my DS3 from COB (cheers mate!) and have bunged in 2 x 1gb of ballistix PC6400. Have followed the guide on the first page and a simple overclock to 2.7ghz was acheived. not had time to push further yet.

however, i was wondering how i run my ram 1:1 as it should be able to push a fair way with the set i have. When i set the System Memory Multiplier to "2x", is this the same as like running a divider on an AMD system???

Hi dude :)

Yip x2 is 1:1 on the DS3. The Intel P965 chipset can't run lower than 1:1, so Gigabyte calls them multipliers instead of dividers.

perfect - just the answer i needed - better get clocking then eh!

I instaled water cooling the other day and have been trying to get my system stable at 3.4 . I am using the 9x multi at a bus speed of 378 , when running orthos with small FTT it does fine for 8 hours but fails quite quickly in blend. currently have a the vcore set just above 1.5 , vmch +0.15, fsb +0.15 and vdimm of +0.3. Ram is underclocked at 756. any ideas???? My spec is in sig.
All sorted turned out to be my ram, so i replaced the corsaire with some geil ultra low latency stuff . now priming at 3.6 :)

Im not sure if this has been said, but is it possible to update the BIOS in windows in the DS3 board, with an application of some kind? I can do that on my current asrock...i dont like the idea of doing it all myself...aand my floppy drive is broken :(

is it possible to "hack" extra fans ontop a old ds3 version1.... i see PWRFAN with 3 blobs of solder, wondering if i could hack a fan onto that... or copuld anyone recommend good fan controller from molex ot 3pin fan

I'm probably doing something stupid, but my PCI-e seems to be now running on 1x on my DS3p. it was fine before on 16x

Is there
A) a way to confirm this
b) change it back up to 16.

Well, I've just had a bad weekend with a DS3 and a DQ6. Started off when I bent the DS3 putting in another couple of sticks of ram, couldn't see anything visible but it wouldn't post at all and just got the power supply problem "beeps". Must have damaged a trace although I can't see it anywhere.

Went to a local supplier and all he had was a DQ6 so I took it, built it up with an E6400, 4GB Corsair 6400 C4 and booted up first time, no problems. Loaded everything back on, checked memory timings in BIOS and set for 4-4-4-12. Frigging thing wont post, just the fans cycling non stop  Tried clearing CMOS, disconnecting everything, but it wont come back. :(

How did you try clearing CMOS? I have a DS3 and found that just shorting the pins very often doesnt work - I have to remove the battery completely and leave it for a few minutes. Make sure that your mains cable is disconnected too.

Yeah, tried all that, jumper from another board as well as a screwdriver, battery out, cable out, different graphics, one stick of ram, different slots, left it overnight and nothing this morning. I'm going to pick up a cheap stick of ram just in case, I've seen some cases of generic stuff allowing them to boot again.

2nd hand Pc advice needed -

Spec -

SilverStone SILVER LC17S DESKTOP CASE
Sony AWG170ASV Siler DVDRW
512 MSI PCIE NX7900GTO-T2D512E
Intel E6400 Core2Duo 2.13GHz
Corsair TwinX 2GB DDR2 6400 C4
250G Samsung SATA2 7200 8MB
Gbyte 965P-DS3 s775 Conroe
FireWire PCI 4 Port Card
550W XCLIO X14P3S4 PSU
3 x Sharkoon Golfball Silent 8cm Case Fan 8.9 dB Low Noise

I have just bought the above Pc second hand - Works fine and seemed like a cracking deal. Quiet is an understatement. Total silence.

I will overclock this for sure but want some pointers first. Have read up quite a bit on here. Even how to overclock the graphics card - further bonus.

1. I have added 2more sata drives, should the PSU be okay with this?

2. Where or what can i use to find the temps of the Cpu accurately? Gigabyte software reckons 29c

3. Myself i think the Cpu is running at 40c (bios) with Intel HSF, will an artic cooling freezer HSF bring it down significantly? If i can the get the HSF to fit that is.

4.What can i expect from the ram on this board 400mhz fsb is okay i presume for DDR2 rated at 800mhz but will it go higher by much?

5. Connected up all the drives on SATA. 2 to the gigabyte sata controller and one to the ICh8 controller. Pc only sees the 2 on the gigabyte controller though. Switching about proves the cables and drives all work if connected to the Gigabyte sata connectors. Maybe i have missed something in Bios?

My main aim is to get a good overclock from the core 2 and graphics card while being as quiet as possible. I have just flashed the bios to F10.

Thanks for any pointers.

Ok call me blind, stupid or whatever but i can find the C1E and TM2 settings to disable on my DS3 after pressing Ctrl+F1 in the Advanced BIOS Features menu, but i can't find the CPU EIST option.

Where abouts should it be?

probably right under my nose tbh :p

With the first board after building the rig it would simply just cycle without posting and would just continue. The fans would spin up but no beeps or anything else! With the replacement board it worked first time proving my first instincts right, that the first board was knackered!

Just read this, from the OP. I'm having this problem currently. Just thought I would highlight this to others who might be experiencing it.

Did the generic RAM allow it to post again?

No and couldn't be bothered to wait for another one. Only thing comparable the shop had was a Commando which appears to be contentious at the moment ;)

Just a quick question - may have been asked a few pages ago but not answered that I can see. I have the S3 version of the board and was wondering if there is any way of locking the RAM speed so it doesn't increase with the FSB? My rebuild has 2Gb of 533Mhz RAM (2 x 1Gb) which was recovered from a Packard Bell iMedia PC and I can't get my 6600 chip to clock over about 2.5Ghz before I get the reboot cycle and need to clear CMOS. Have tried setting RAM to 2x as suggested in all the FAQ's but still no good.

In addition, FSX crashed my most recent attempt at an overclock - running at 2.48Ghz, BSOD on changing views and when I booted up, PC was booting to 2.4Ghz again. Strange thing though, when I entered MIT to check the FSB, was still showing 276!

I suspect again the problem was this cheapo RAM but I can't afford to replace it with anything better. So unless anyone can suggest how to tie down the RAM, I'm stuck running at stock speeds.

I am afraid it's bad news - I think that the P965 chipset only allows you to run 1:1 at lowest (no dividers), that's why if you want a decent OC you will need 800MHz or some very good 533MHz.
