Gigabyte DS3/DS4/DQ6 Guide

Hi Folks,

I recently purchased a ds3p (rev 3.3) amongst various other components to build a new pc. (cd2 e6600, geil ram)

Having finally put it all together, i pushed the on switch for the 1st time, only for the fans to cycle and then reset, rinse and repeat..... :(

So I have meandered thro the forums, the OP of this thread talks about

Others seem to have had similar issues, and some have resolve this with cmos resets, processor/heatsink re-seats, blind luck ?

I've tried the above, to no avail, any other suggestions, have i missed something daft? Or am I stuck with taking everything apart again and sending it back ?

Thanks in advance...

Mine did the same, Booted all my fans cept cpu fan spun then rebooted like 3 seconds later continuously .. I didn't have a clue what was up. So i rang a pc buddy who came round and he reseated the cpu and reset cmos and viola it was fine :)

Buying a new cooler on Monday, when/if it comes on Tuesday im off work Tues/Wed/Thurs and Friday day so i can have a good play :p

Noctua fits fine here on mine :)

Nice one , which way around do u have the airflow lunix ? i was hoping to have the flow directed to the back of the case under the psu so my 120mm fan can extract the air out of the case

Jut dropped my Ram voltage from 2.1 to 2.0 and now the pc wont boot. Its spinning up for 3-4 second then shutting down and starting again. Tried restting the BIOS and tried removing some ram but its still the same.
Is this the same problem the original poster had

With the first board after building the rig it would simply just cycle without posting and would just continue. The fans would spin up but no beeps or anything else! With the replacement board it worked first time proving my first instincts right, that the first board was knackered!

Seems the same but he dont say it switched on and off. The 1st time it started doing it the screen said Bios recovering reading from hard drive. But now i dont get the screen on its not on long enough. Help! :)

Sorry for the slow reply. This was taken 3-4 weeks ago, its a bit cleaner/tidier in there now since then :D

Fitted it yesterday and im happy with the results, thanks again for the info lunix , very much appreciated

Now i'd like to ask about the onboard sound on these ds3p boards, are they considered any good ? i was wondering if i could turn sound settings up to 'high' in games like bf2 ?

has anyone managed to get more than 450FSB with a 6300 on the DS3? mine boots at 460MHz and is 16 hrs orthos stable, but on reboot it just starts the power cycle and resets to 266MHz FSB

Just RMA'd a abit board and ordered a DS3 to partner a e2140 and Crucial Ballistix pc5300 . I take it all the boards being sold now are rev 3.3?

the DS3 i got was a REV3.3 and already had the latest bios on

This has been a great help to me. I'm an old school overclocker and having just bought a Gigabyte GA P35C DS3R and E6420 C2D i had a very basic idea of what i needed to do in the bios. This info provided by Monstermunch is extremely useful.

I've done all of the settings you state in the bios. I didn't even know about the CTRL F1 for advanced mode, and i was slightly miffed cos i thought i couldn't set manual ram timings hehe. I'm gonna install my freezer7 pro as soon as i've finished this post then start upping the FSB to see what the chip will do.

I've also set the memory timings manually for my 4X1GB Geil ULL 800 to 4 4 4 12. Will this effect my overclock? what setting should i set my ram timings at?

I've installed all of the drivers for the mobo from the cd but i've not yet installed any of the software tools for overclocking. Which do i need to install off the cd and what will i need to test the overclock?

Thanks for this its been a great help.

I'll post my findings soon.

GIGABYTE GA P35C DS3R
4x1GB 6400 800MHz Geil Ultra low latency
E6420 C2D
BFG 8080 GTS
MAXTOR SATA 250 GB
TAGAN 480W PSU

I wondered why my overclocks weren't stable till I read this thread, should have done that first. Lowering the multiplyer down and then specifying the host clock sorted me out, 2.7 GHz on an E4300 with stock volts :)

Very pleased.

After having just experienced a friends E6420 running at 3.6 1.5V, make a 'Tzzzzt' sound, and give off a funny metallic, something gone wrong smell and die only minutes ago  i'm a bit scared of this now.

I've spent ages fiddling with my chip (ooer :D ) and seem to have found the sweet spot. Standard volts everywhere, Ram 2.0 multi, 4 4 4 12 timings and fully orthos stable at 3008GHz 33 idle 47 load. Room is very warm, case temp was at 48 degrees until i put the case side back on and it dropped back to 39-40.

I've had it stable in prime for 2 hours @ 3680 1.45 volts 5 5 5 15 timings. Oddly 3.2 and 3.4 seemed to be slightly flakey compared to 3.6. Mind you i've not used 1.45 volts at the lower setting. I was getting bored and thought bugger it, give it 1.45 and pick a number out of a hat, 3.6 it is, It worked easy, i was expecting trouble but it laughed at me and kinda shrugged its shoulders.

I really think this chip would go far futher but i just don't want to risk it. I've decided to leave it at its sweet spot of 3 GHz. Its just so much safer there. And its super fast for the money. so i'm happy.

Sorry i couldn't see the sig image for some odd reason. I have the P35C DS3R board and the same ram as you. I have had numerous problems similar to yours and forgot i hadn't set the timings manually in the bios. Which seems to be a must with this ram.

What does the motherboard manual say about that molex connector next to your ATX power connector?

...that 4 pin 'molex' plug is for SLi apparently. connect it anyway, i would.

not only do you need to set the ram timings in the bios but you need to set the correct ram voltage too. The board is 1.8 standard i believe? so you need to change the VDIMM to +0.3V to take you up to 2.1V which is the only setting this ram seems to run happy on (obviously too as its stated 2.1V on the modules lol)
