Gigabyte DS3/DS4/DQ6 Guide

Depends what you use your pc for....by running one instance is only using one core so the other is not being used that's why you should run two...and change it to small fft's to stress cpu....if it does happen to crap out just give it a little more vcore but watch those temps....if it's getting to toasty i would not let run overnight you might wake up to a nackered pc....so take care....remember you got nothing to prove to no one here....it's totally up to you :)

Erm he's running the beta that stresses both cores.

Well you learn something new every day lol....it's just i've never used the newer beta only sp2004 + old orthos version which as you know runs 2 instances....thanks for clearing that one up Cob. ;)

@ Bludgeon...what can i say...well done... but don't be suprised if someone comes along and ask you to run it again with small fft's....what vcore did you use?.

Hi everyone - new here.

Placed an order on the 25th and have now recieved my email saying my order has been shipped.

Now before I placed my order I did some checking around and asking questions on forums (Never knew this site had a forum) and pretty much everything I ordered was recommended by several people.

Now after placing my order I finally discover this forum and find out that the board and memory I chose may have conflicts - but on other forums these two were specifically recommended as the way to go.

Here's what I ordered:

Gigabyte GA_965P_DS3 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (MB-061-GI)
Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail (CP-128-IN)
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket 775) (HS-017-AR)
G.Skill 2GB DDR2 GA PC2-5400 (2x1GB) CAS3 Dual Channel Kit (F2-5400CL3D-2GBGA) (MY-015-GS)
OcUK MSI GeForce 7900 GTO SILENT 512MB GDDR3 VIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-041-OK)
OCZ GameXStream 600w Silent SLI Ready ATX2 Power Supply (CA-018-OC)

So you see I have the DS3 and some G.Skill ram - so am I going to have a nightmare of a time with this or have subsequent bios updates removed this problem?

Also once I've installed everything and reformatted the hard drives do I need to flash the Bios or tweak the Bios before I start installing Windows or can I literally stick the stuff in and boot up and then tweak once I'm up and running?

Basically I'm asking whether there is anything I need to know or software I need ready before I format as I will be without the internet until I'm finished.

Many Thanks for reading.

Well, the latest bios for the DS3 (F7) and other updates before it have removed a lot of the ram incompatibility but there are still a few problems out there....

One of the main issues these series of boards have is that the std vdimm is set to 1.8v, when nearly every single stick of DDR2 ram 667mhz or upwards seems to require 2.1v to run properly.

The GSkill may work or it may not.... It's a little hit and miss unfortunately, give it a try at least but I would suggest the first thing to do is to up the vdimm to +0.3v (if you can get into bios!) If it doesn't wiork at all then I would suggest RMA'ing the ram and getting the geil value or the ultra instead.

I have 1gb of Geil value ram on my DS4. Ran Memtest86 this morning for 5 hours and got 400+ errors :(

No wonder my applications keep crashing. Windows also keeps losing its visual styles, and leaving me with the "windows classic" only option.

I've RMA'd the ram, and ordered Geil Ultra 2gb.

I've been really impressed by the level of aftersales service by Overclockers Tech Support.

I do have 1 problem with the DS4 board tho.

When I reboot, it hangs on the POST. I have to reboot it again before it decides to boot from the hard drive.

I have the boot priorities in bios set correctly.

Any ideas?

Sounds like a mobo issue to me.... wouldn't be suprised if the ram you rma'd actually works fine!

I'm having all manner of problems with my DS4, same problem as the chap above with windows themes, keeps changing it everytime I boot, FSX constantly crashes/sound loops but Orthos will run happily for hours on end doing a blend test, other games, e.g. BF2, WoW and Oblivion (apart from FSX) seem to run fine though. Is anyone running the low latency Geil 6400 and a C2D 6300 overclocked with this board? If so, could you let me know your BIOS settings/voltages? Cheers.

The motherboard seems fine, too me.

I've been getting quite a few "memory could not be read at address xxxx" application pop up errors, and the dreaded random BSOD "IRQL_NOT_EQUAL...." screen.

From past experience, that always points to RAM problems.

I was having the same random reboot problem as you and found putting the MCH in the bios +1.5 and upping the core voltage a notch or 2 cured it.
