Golf R

I think this is one of those situations where you'd think to yourself "what would my dad think about me spending 40k on a golf" and then give yourself a lecture about wise investment and that your silly Honda was better.

I think cars like this will end up getting leased rather than bought, which is what tends to happen these days and why people who appear to have £££ have different brand new cars every year. These are also the type of people who get sold on buzz words and acronyms that make basic tech seem the best new thing ever. It's too much money for what is probably a good car £20k ago.

Aye, and though I don't (:o), when it actually comes to splashing the cash it's inevitably a different matter altogether.

Yep, nail on the head. Value has a very different meaning when you are in a position to spend the money. A 40k Golf needs to be more special than this as though Robbie may think it's special it simply isn't when you look at it with a more rationale and object manner.

Well, except the different turbo and mapping, the different power outputs (if you are going to cite rolling road figures as evidence that the ED30 overperforms to the S3's book level, the S3 overperforms so it still isn't equivilent), the lack of 4WD and so on... Yeah, exactly the same

The two cars are similar, but they are not the same car. The Golf R is closer, and the engine in the R (pending rolling road figures) is booked at the same figure as most S3's put out, so I'd expect that does have the same/very similar engine, and it has the 4WD. It's also about the same cost with (likely by history) a slightly worse resale.

Don't take this as a criticism of VW, it isn't, but if you're going to make arguments about the similarities, at least get them right.

They both have the same engine. I didnt say they had the same turbo, the same power and mapping. The ED30 is 230bhp and with a £800 remap it easily does 300Bhp. So for £800 you get S3 performance!

^ he speaks the truth.

any1 who saw the guy with the edition 30 whip a B7 RS4 - (vtecabuser) was in the papers - he got done by the plod

He has an S3, which is why he is quick to defend! :P

Afaik the parts on the Ed30 engine are pretty much the same as the S3, but the S3 gains the advantage with the 4WD system. You also get more as standard on the S3. Put them both to a test (especially in the wet!) and the S3 will shine.

Also; In an S3 Vs R20 track test I believe the R20 will have the slight advantage, VW have been boasting about the equipment on it to make it a good handler and managing the power throughout as you push it through its paces. If this is the case it will be why the R20 is better over the S3, only slightly though and I would ask myself if that advantage is worth it over a slightly used well spec'd S3.

I still have to say: The R20 is a BEAST! Watch when it comes to tuning as well, especially if a 400+ bhp S3 is possible.

IIRC both the S3 and the Ed 30 have the same K04 turbo aswell as the same uprated internals(crank/con rods/pistons/head). It's just a detuned map on the Ed 30 that makes the difference.

4WD also adds weight but I agree with you that the 4WD has the advantage in the wet.

The S3 weighs 1495kg and the Ed30 weighs 1376kg - over a 100kg lighter.

Tune the Ed30 with an APR stage 1 remap (£499) which gives circa 310bhp and it will have the advantage over the S3 all for £499!

Doesn't 4WD also consume more fuel...?

Is the S3 a true 4WD or does it only send power to rear wheels when it needs to (like the r32)?

Definitely, as well as knowledge. £40k on a Golf to me is insane, whereas to my girlfriend with all the money in the world and no knowledge of cars, there's nothing wrong with it. :/

IT'S NOT 40K!!!!
Starting price is £28,930

Thats good for a car with 266bhp as standard and a fuel economy of 33.2mpg and CO2 emmisions of 199g/km with 0-62mph in 5.7sec

Looks fab to me!

Unfortunately I priced up a 5 door DSG with Sat Nav and audio upgrades, leather sports seats, metallic paint and a few other small bits and pieces and it was £40k already, not even fully loaded :(.

I also notice that cruise control and hill hold are listen as optional extras!??!

As I said, to add stuff you might reasonably expect on a modern brand leading model such as Sat Nav, Telephone Prep, Pearl Paint, Parking Sensors, 5 Doors (for me), 19's it was pretty close to £40K. Add those options to an RS for example and I would expect it to be close to £30K, if they needed adding...

People keep mentioning the 4WD system, but does anyone know exactly how it works? I was lead to believe that they run a 90:10 split, does it alter this dynamically? To what?
