Golf R

People want a Golf because it's more practical and it's a Golf.

People want a Scirocco because it's more stylish and sporty looking.

People want a 3 door Golf because it's in the middle.

I am almost certain that if the Scirocco had the same technical specifications as the Golf R, they would sell about 5 3 door Golfs.

Otherwise where do we stop? I fancy a Touran but a little bit lower. Lets make a special one with a lower roof for people who dont want a Touran. I also want a Polo thats 3 inches longer, and I really fancy a Passat that's like a bit more swoopy. Oh wait :(

It's pointless. VW keep overproducing cars in a certain market segment and then selling hardly any of the inferior version. You'd think they would learn after the disasterous Golf Plus, the Audi competing Passat W8, the A8 rivalling Pheaton...

But no.

Where does it stop? It stops when people cease to buy them.

It can't be massively hard / more expensive to make a 3 door Golf instead of a 5 door, and if it opens up their range slightly... what's the beef?

  • New shell design
  • New panel press pattens
  • New robot program to weld them
  • New robot painting program to spray them
  • New door design
  • New doorcard design
  • New seat design
  • New rear panel and seat design
  • New rear window design
  • Additional assembly training
  • Parts not produced in as great quantity so each part costs more

I could keep on going.

But the basic shell, panels, and specific interior parts (With perhaps the rear seats as an exception?) are in use with lesser models anyway?

Irrelevent if the basic shell is the same, its a different car B pillar back, you need to comission new panel patten presses and these cost a fortune, due to the larger doors you need to re evaluate the crash protection the list just goes on and on.

Its basically a new shell redesign from the drawing board up.

Whilst its easier to design and build a 3 door version of a 5 door car, its not cheap to do.

Its like saying well its easy to build an estate version based on the saloon platform, we just tack a bit on the back...... Yea right...

I guarantee if they didn't make a three door Golf, that you'd hear far more complaints about it.

If you could buy a Scirocco R with 4WD and a Golf 5 door with 4WD but no 3 door there would not be a baying crowd of annoyed 3 door Golf R customers outside VW HQ.

You're missing my point.

The three door already exists for the 1.4s, diesels etc.

Or are you suggesting that the three door golf should be abolished all together?

I was under the impression we are talking about the golf range as a whole not just the R20, yes the 3 door golf should go imho but i feel that way about most 3 door small family cars when another option within the company exists.

I am suggesting the Scirocco R should replace the 3 door Golf R.

Mind you didn't they gimp the Scirocco by giving it the old Golfs interior as well?

It's almost as if they don't want it to sell

No, but we do seem to have an angry mob because it does actually exist, which is a bit strange.

It sells on hype, exterior aesthetics and name alone.

This is precisely why they nerf it in so many ways, because they can, and it keeps the Golf in the running.

I'm sure they did something similar with the MK3 GTI 8V, 16V and VR6. I mean, 8V at something like 110BHP?! The 16V which was easily capable of 170BHP+ but quoted at 150BHP so as not to take sales away from the VR6.

Over on the two Golf forums that I frequent, the general populous that don't have kids or grannies to ferry about, seem to prefer the 3 door Golf to the 5 door Golf for reasons of style.

They literally just seem to think it looks better in 3 door guise.

I don't see the point in abolishing the 3 door Golf because it will kill the following market: people that prefer the styling of the Golf over the Scirocco, but also prefer the styling of 3 door cars over 5 door cars.

The reason they prefer the 3 door Golf is probably not because of styling. It'll be for other reasons, like the fact VW seem intent on cannabilising Scirocco sales by offering it with a poor interior and without the technical spec of the equivilent Golf.

The Scirocco is an interesting and good looking car. The Golf is a horribly generic hatchback, IMHO.
