Yep, agreed. The MD clubs are very good value. I have 2 of the rescue clubs, a #2 (18*) and #3 (21*) and they are very nice clubs, off the tee, the fairway and even the light rough. And they are pretty forgiving too.

Tried a few at my local american golf, the new taylormade rescue, the baffler and the callaway diablo..

After the assistant had said the baffler was the best out there i tried and he was right. Felt really clean and crisp. Will sort myself out and have one bought fairly sharpish.

so what's considered a bandit stableford score in everyone's opinion? i've never played in a stableford competition but in trying to sort out handicaps for a forthcoming Forest of Arden weekend we're getting into a few "debates" as to what our handicaps should be. is over 40 a bandit? over 30? what's considered "par" - 36?

36 points is indeed 'par'.

40 points, i consider you have played really well.

41-44 points, played out of your skin.

45+ freak round or bandit ;)

imo ;)

nice thanks, did 42 at the weekend but I've also done 46 off the same handicap - think my handicap needs to come down :p

edit: should also say i've done 25 and below before off the same handicap :D

Just tried Titleist Pro V1 balls for the 1st time yesterday (found a couple during my game :) ). I couldn't believe the difference! I thought there would be little to no difference in distance or feel, but how wrong I was!

Drives were consistantly anything between 20-40yds farther, and iron shots just had a really nice feel to them. Putting too was brilliant. This is compared to my current favourite, Precept Laddie Xtreme. I also tried a TopFlite and Srixon AD333 too for comparison and they went nowhere near as far as the Pro V1 either.

The ball just seems to race away from the club like a missile! It accelerated so quickly in fact that I lost sight of it on several shots, which rarely happens to me.

I know they are expensive, but now I sort of see why. They're great. Not sure I would be happy to pay almost £3 a ball, especially whilst I am still a high handicapper though! Going to keep an eye on prices and maybe grab some if they are ever on offer.

Yeah i always find loads and they are great, i find them really good around the green as well as for distance! If your getting some get used ones in good condition!

There is not doubt the high end golf balls are better, but like you say £3 a ball is expensive, BUT only if you lose them ;)

Or hit them into trees and get a massive yellow blob on them and some cuts :(

Remember blazing a 5 iron straight into an overhanging branch about 30-40 yards away from where i was swinging, cannoned into the air and came back down with a huge yellow blob and a cut on it, good job i'd only just found it haha :D

I am recently playing with Bridgestone B330 Tour's from 2008, you can get last years models for around £20 a box instead of £30 for the 2009 models. They are very soft around the greens and long off the tee; which incidently is what every ball claims to do. The best way to tell a good ball from a bad ball is usually quite simple, it comes down to being 2-3 peice (3 is far superior and more expensive), and then price.

Best stableford score so far off my society handicap was 52 points (i had a 3 for 1 for 6pts on a par 5 which was rather amusing to see folks faces!!! haha). I asked for a cut a number of times (it's 24hcp, just been cut to 22 as i scored 47pts on the last outing??? Strange!) as i play with a lot of the same guys off 12 outside the society (i keep track of my hcp using todaysgolfer tracker thingy and it's currently 12.3) but the guy running it will onlt take your society scores into account when doing the adjusting, main problem is we are usually tanked up before playing and the last couple of times out i scored in bandit country but the three times before that (being well oiled!) i scored 18, 24 and 32 points off a 24hcp!

As for balls, get to know your Pro, or even better have a mate who is a pro :D, that way you get better prices, £26 for 2009 model ProV1s, £18 for Nike Tours (not the Vapor, the more expensive one!). Also get at least 25% off clubs prices in the shop plus mates discount on top.

Had a good session at the range last night. Was a bit of a demonstration going on with Nike clubs too. We got a bit of time with a massive driver. Think it was available at £199 with £50 worth of vouchers towards Nike gear. Anyway this club was brilliant! Massive face on it so it was impossible not to hit it in a straight line! Would say its a very nice beginners driver :p

Having a massive face probably just means it has high MOI so it doesn't twist as much if you hit it just off the toe, a massive face doesn't stop the club from being open when striking the ball causing a slice, or stop you from swinging out to in causing you to pull the ball etc.

Can anyone just confirm that a second hand set of mx-25 for ~£180 is a good price, bearing in mind they have little wear around the grooves/faces no pit marks, but the sole of the 9 iron has a gouge taken out of it.

Got to say if they aren't pristine I wouldn't pay that much for them. Around the £120 mark is more like it if they have some wear and tear. Though at the end of the day as with all second hand goods, they are only worth what someone is willing to pay.
