Can anyone just confirm that a second hand set of mx-25 for ~£180 is a good price, bearing in mind they have little wear around the grooves/faces no pit marks, but the sole of the 9 iron has a gouge taken out of it.

personally would never touch a set of irons that sound as bad as you have described them.

Not recommending any sets in particular because you are best to try before you buy but for £50 more the Wilson irons below or £100 more Taylors Made irons. For the sake of a bit more cash a brand new set of irons is much better starting place. Again not recommending the sets below in particular but just an idea of how a good set of new irons doesn't need to cost to much more than an awful sounding set!!

P.S my mate just bought the taylor made ones above and loves them.

I went to go get them, but they were gone :(

But they had another set :) and had no marks on the faces and the only downside was a smallish dent on the shaft say the width a quarter of a 5 pence piece of the nine iron. £140 :D

Nice price. You can probably get the 9 iron re-shafted for not much brass also, i had to get my 6i and PW re-done, and even sending them back to Taylormade only cost £35 per club with new shafts , grips and fitting. Cost would have been cheaper if it had been a more common Rifle/Dynamic Gold shaft that my pro would have done for £20 with all the above included also.

Could I get some advice: I got 3-PW which is all good, went to play on the local par 3, but around the greens say 20-30 yards I felt I was missing a wedge to play the short chip.

Am I missing a 56 degrees or a Sand wedge or are they the same thing?

Your PW will be around 48deg. From what you are saying it does sound like you could use a higher lofted. A sand wedge it usually around 54-56deg.

I carry a PW and then a 52,56 and 60deg wedges.

EDIT:

Forgot to say, depending on how much your willing to pay, the Callaway X forged at £80 are the best wedges around at the moment.

Higher is good for soft sand and wet fairways, but on tight links fairways or compacted sand lower bounce is better. Personally i prefer low bounce wedges (i use Ping Tour WRX T Grind - basically the back of the wedge is ground away so there is hardly any bounce) as they can be adapted more easily to add bounce (i.e. if i need a high bounce i'll lay the face open of my 50/54degree wedge to give more loft -makes it a 60/64- and more bounce) if required, but you cant take bounce off a wedge when you are on the course

So 10 would be OK? I am never going to play on links since I live in Windsor, but at the same time would like to make more use of opening up the face. Only reason I like the club is because ive heard good things and the reasonable price.

In America I have heard Cleveland sell two wedges for $99 but haven't seen anything like that here.

I had another lesson tonight with the head PGA pro at a local course. Really enjoyed it, he said i have perfect posture. The main reason i was not consistant with my shots was due to my grip not being right. He showed me the correct grip - it wasn't that different from what i had but the difference did make it feel weird, we also worked on swing etc, i have another lesson in about 2 weeks to work on other things!

Yeh they are pro, it cost me £18 for the head pro or £16 with a normal pro. I prefer the first.

Its 30minutes long (however he does tend to get excited and go over a little bit)

My main problem now is that since i changed my grip when on my downswing my hands seem to rotate back to the previous position turning the club face and i just slice the ball miles right :(...need to stop this!

One of the 'exercises' he did with me was pouring water on the grass mat and having me swing - with no ball there - and hit the water so i hit the water enough that it sprays out infront of me. It was quite clever actually.

I remember having my grip tweaked when having a lesson about a year back now, felt absolutely alien and terrible, nothing went where i wanted it to go! Fast forward a couple of weeks and a few rounds of practise and it was brilliant! I also took away the ability to slightly shape my shots just by playing around with my grip.

Stick with the grip the Pro has taught you. It is a pain getting used to it, but will be well worth it when you do. It's all about muscle memory. Once you've been practising for a while, it will feel natural again.

I've been told I need to sort out my weight shift as everything is coming from my shoulders at the moment and that's most of the reason I am fading the ball. Also I tend to open my shoulders a little at address.

It feels pretty weird, and almost as if I am off balance, but I know if I stick at it, the results will come. I smashed a few drives yesterday about 40-50yds farther and straighter than ever, and there's no doubt it was because I shifted the weight correctly.
