That's exactly what it's for.
Lots of players prefer hitting full shots for the gap distance instead of choking down on a PW or trying to nail a SW.
It doesn't really offer any other benefits like the SW does with it's usually higher bounce:)

I also use my 52 around the green. I feel i get more control with it. More check than my PW and less height than my SW, for those little chips.

What's the best way to improve your drive? I've been playing about a month now and my drive is simply rubbish, it's so inconsistent and i've resorted to tee-ing off with irons. I can usually get near the green on a par3 with say a 6iron but when I try and drive it either doesn't travel far or slices right!

I try and visit the diving range as much as I can but it starts to get fairly expensive!!

Also what do you lot do when Autumn / Winter comes? I'd like to keep playing but I bet the courses get packed at the weekend!

Tee-ing off with irons is fine, in society days i still tee off on some par 4's with hybrid/4 iron, it's a more consistant shot and it's better to be in the fairway 70-80yds behind where a good drive would land than 50yds further up the fairwaay but in the trees/heavy rough! The only way to cure the slice consistantly is lessons with a good teacher and practice.

If you have a municipal course near you, they may have a practice area where you can just go down and use your own buckets of balls to practice, saves the expense.

Autumn/Winter is great for golf so long as you dont mind getting wet/cold the odd time, the courses are deserted at most places unless it is a really nice day. Lots of summer only golfers out there! :D (i played around Xmas, it was showing -6c on the car temperature at 8am in the morning! )

If you are worried about the expense of ranges, go to top golf, I pay £5 and play unlimited number of balls :)

Pay £10 and get unlimited range time/balls and use of their 9 hole all day :)

Oh wow, thats amazing, £5 for unlimited balls! Shame there isn't one near me :(

My local range has just gone up to £5.50 for 100 balls.

When i started at the range it was always a big 100 ball basket, now it's more quality over quantity, i usually get either the 35 or 50 balls option but still spend even more time at the range due to taking my time and working on the specifics i've gone to the range to work out.

I hate this bloody game :(

Ever since i had my lesson last wednesday and changed my grip (so my right hand moves round the club more) i can't stop slicing.

EVERY SINGLE shot slices right, i have tried to correct it but i cant :(

I have a lesson on saturday but i'm playing tonight and don't want to keep slicing as it gets me angry and i don't enjoy it.

The coach said my hands on the downswing keep going back to the previous position and i just need to get used to the new grip, i try....i cant :(

I had this exact same problem, my grip was "too strong" and my right hand was under the club more than over the top. He made me change it and bring it more over the top to a "weak grip" and forever more i was slicing much like you seem to be. I found when practising/playing i was over compensating and gripping far to much over the top (to the left), so switched to somewhere in the middle of the stong and weak grips to go to a neutral/weak grip.

Stick with it, it will eventually help you out much more and you'll start to get a feel for what your doing in the comming weeks and can ever so slightly tweek it yourself for better results

Do clubs actually help cure a slice? I bought an King Cobra FP 6iron off the bay for £10 and it's very hard for me to slice it with that I was pleasantly surprised.

My driver is a cheapo Dunlop 65i, and if you try and hit it hard it just goes right, unless you hit it exactly right it always slices right. I've been offered a King Cobra Speed LD driver for £40 and wondering if it will be a bit more forgiving than the Dunlop?

I always think its better to learn to swing properly rather than get clubs to hide your faults, but that's just my newbie golf opinion.

Yup this is what i have, my right hand is now over the top of club like you say, but when i swing even though it stays the same place on the grip it reverts back to being 'under' the club so my club face is facing outwards

Have you tried turning the clubface a little to the left then taking your new grip? Might look odd at address, but should bring the face square on impact.

If you do slice, it will be much less obvious as you go down the clubs, so that is likely why you don't see much of it with the 6 iron, yet it is quite obvious with the driver.

Don't forget the driver is the hardest club in the bag to hit and the one that will really highlight any flaws you have.

Yes, you can get clubs to help stop slicing (draw bias) but all you are doing is covering up a problem with your swing/grip and fooling yourself.

I would suggest rather than buy any new clubs just yet that you use the money to get a lesson and find out why you are slicing and how to cure it properly.
