Never played at Low Laithes though I drive past it most days. Have you been up to Willow Valley?

Nope. Know a lot of people that have though, they say it's full of watery goodness? :D

Managed to play a fair few courses back when I played for the rabbits section 10 or so years ago.

Courses around my way that I've played:

Outlane
Lupset GC
South Leeds
Howley Hall
Normanton
Low Laithes
Lofthouse
Dewsbury GC

Best by far was LL, worst by far was Lofthouse - horrible.

Oh we were talking about trying Lofthouse, what's so wrong with it?

I haven't played the pro course at Willow yet, but I've done the standard 18. It's not bad.

I quite like Lupset. It's a very long course without too many obstacles. I can see how it would get boring quite quickly, but to a noob it's nigh on perfect as I can just concentrate on accuracy and distance, not having to worry about traps, etc.

For a muni Lupset is kept is very good condition. Was a member there about 2 years ago and its definitely good for keeping your game sharp.

Lofthouse was horrible, fairways were almost non existent grass wise, greens were very tatty as was the course in general, front 9 is basically all OOB left and right, and not the challenging type, the type where they had no semi rough to catch balls that roll through the fairway. The back 9 is basic straight holes which I can imagine getting very boring.

There was always the chance it was an off day or week/month for the club but I used to speak to players from other Rabbit teams and it was pretty much agreed that it was an awful track and the worst in the current league.

Lofthouse is a badly laid out track, too many OOB and fairways running parallel means it can feel like you are the fish in the saying 'like shooting fish in a barrel' at times!

Not keen on South Leeds, cant really say why as it's not too bad a track, maybe the abuse from the school kids or the bad condition of some holes through the same kids using it as a BMX track might be to blame.

Outlane, if you are a mountain goat with one leg longer than the other you'll be fine as it's all on the side of a hill.

Howley Hall is one of my favourites and pretty good value for money for what you get, greens were lightning quick last year.

Just sorting a knock around Ganton with a supplier middle of May, played it a few years ago and loved it, proper millionaires golf!

Can't go wrong up at Leeds Golf Centre (Wike). It's where I usually play. They've spent a lot of money on the course and the clubhouse in recent years and it's done it wonders.

Not keen on Wike myself, the layout isn't great and they still take in money keeping the course open when it should be shut. The membership is now on par with other local clubs which I think give more of a challenge. The only thing I do think they are good at is the junior section and practice facilities.

I take it the Woodhall Spa day is the Golf Monthly one? Also, whereabouts in Manchester do you play? I'm currently looking into joining a club around here but I can't seem to make my mind up.

I'm not sure, I never asked.

And so far nowhere, I am going to use just the driving range at Trafford Centre for a while untill I have got back into it. And do some research on where would be the best place to play.

I play irregularly at Pedham Place on the A20/M2 junction so close to Wrotham. Not a member anywhere as I don't play often enough but looking for more games if you're ever looking for people to make up a group.

Ah nice. I was down up there yesterday at the range. Probably heading over there again tonight! Waiting for some nicer weather to get out on the course again.

Royal and Awesome indeed. Pretty tame compared to my mates trousers! Pic to follow.

Think it was a Groupon deal - £100 for the 4 ball. Even allowed us to play on Easter Monday with no issues.

edit - mates trousers -

Great deal that, 25 quid each is brilliant! And yes...ahem...your mate has just a few colour clashes going on there lol :D

Arrived this morning! Thanks dude! :D

Hey no worries, hope you get some good use out of it :)

We played at Bromsgrove golf club last week, our club has a reciprocal deal where we can play each others course for a tenner. I was pretty impressed with it to be honest, not particularly long but quite tight. Some picturesque holes though and I'll be playing it totally differently the next time I go, the driver will most definitely be staying in the bag a lot more!

The 1st - Par 4, 350 yards slight dogleg left.

The 16th - Par 3 180 yards across the lake.

Hi Guys, total beginner here... got a few questions about kit.

1) I've been to a driving range a coupl of times with a friend of mine and started hitting balls 100/150yds with his irons. I'm foolishly getting married next year so have very little spare money, but he suggested getting a cheap used 7 iron just so I can go and hit balls on the range to get my swing going. This sound like a good idea? Found a couple on the 'bay for around £20.

2) Once I get going and start playing actual rounds, I'll obviously need more clubs. I'm 6'4 and although I've used my friend's clubs a couple of times, I can tell they're too short so I'll need to get some longer ones. Can you get these as part of starter sets from places like American Golf, Sports Direct etc? Seen some good packages for around £250 for irons, driver, putter and bag... but no mention of an option for lanky folk.

1) My advice would be don't go to the range and just swing without having had a lesson or two and been pointed in the right direction. You'll establish bad body movements, posture etc that will take longer to correct as you get into it more and want to improve. Lots of places do beginner courses in groups and I would recommend looking for something like this.

2) I'm 6'4" and used standard spec clubs for the first year of playing whilst I tried to establish a proper swing. You could probably go and get a basic entry spec of fitted clubs later down the line for a couple of hundred or so more than what you've got there.

Hope that is of use. Someone else may have different more informed information on 2).

I've thought about lessons - do they provide clubs for you to use though or do you need to bring your own?

Had a bit more of a search online and found some full starter sets with a +1" shaft for around £200 which is pretty reasonable to get me started:

Wilson Profile
Wilson Prostaff HL
Ben Sayers Tour Steel V5

Should I be avoiding any of these or beginner sets around this price all much the same?

Also, ebay for the clubs would be my recommendation.

Couldn't agree more with the eBay for a first set of golf clubs. You don't need to get clubs to fit whilst learning.

Also to everyone else out there. I am going to Palm Springs in September and looking to play a few rounds out there. Has anyone got any recommendations from past experience maybe?

Cheers!

As in Ebay for a used set you mean? Just going to get a 7 iron to begin with, seen a used one on Ebay for £20 delivered which is +1".

Checked that Ping size guide, they say +1" for 6'4 - 6'7 and I'm 6'4 and a bit. At what position do you measure your wrist to the floor though?

I've been using my friend's regular length irons so far and they do feel short, he's 5'11.

I've thought about lessons - do they provide clubs for you to use though or do you need to bring your own?

Depends where you go I guess. Always better to have your own set so you can get out and practice with the same clubs all the time so I'd take that plunge and go get some lessons before your fitted ones which you'd then most likely keep for a long time.

I wouldn't be getting them fitted as such, just with 1" longer shafts which seem to be quite common having done some searching online. Then further down the line if I'm still playing (and more importantly ever have any money ever again after getting married...) I can look at getting actual custom-fit ones.
