brendy, looks like a lovely course!

Its Ballyliffin, they have two fantastic courses, the old links and the Glashedy (named after the big rock just out beyond the bay). If you ever get over to Donegal, it is the one place you must play. The clubhouse, staff etc are all first rate and not a hint of elitism in the place compared to some courses I have played in GB & Ire. Prob one of the only courses I happily drive over 100 miles to play.

Shot a new PB today at my home course, carded an 85 including an 8 on the 18th (out of bounds shot over the green oops) 44 stableford points. I know I could have done a few more things to have sharpened up my round but oh well that'll come. One thing that did really help was my range finder on the 11th, I checked the range (158 yards) pulled an 8 iron struck it well but lost it into the suns glare. Walked toward the green scouting around (as you do) then catch a glimpse of it on the green within a foot of the pin (felt somewhat elated at that so had a bit of a laugh), didn't gimme it I decided for birdie I had to send it home.

Still not had a chance to get out and play since early March but striking ball well on range. Have been practicing through the clubs and pretending to play the coarse really sharpens you up, thanks for that tip :)
Also bought some drill stix to check alignment and swing plane and made a slight adjustment in my stance to stop my right shoulder feeling trapped which in turn made me come over the top at times.
So all in all a good few weeks, hoping to get out next weekend if all goes well.

PS how do i add pics?

Hey all,

New to golf (literally played a few times and still don't always connect with the ball). I'm looking at getting some cheap clubs and have two options at the minute. 1 - Friend at work has some 15 year old Ping clubs that need new handles, have no bag and he can't find the driver but I can have for say 25 quid. I would need to buy a driver and a bag (these look costly!). Alternatively I can get a full Callaway starter set here - https://www.golfonline.co.uk/callaw...-package-set?gclid=CI2K5-S1wcQCFc7LtAodvwIAPw which includes all I need but is £150. I'm not fussed about spending £150 to get the full kit with no hassles but not sure what I should do.

Thoughts?

I would buy a cheap new set of clubs like the ones you linked to and then purchase a better set of irons in the future once you start to improve and once you know golf is for you. I'm assuming all the grips need to be replaced? If that's the case then you're looking at £80-90 just to replace the grips presuming the set is something like 4-SW, then a bag will set you back at least £30-40 even if you got a mega cheap one from ebay, and a driver will be at least the same amount. You'll be looking at close to £200, if not a bit more.

I started out by playing with a cheap Dunlop set similar to the ones you're looking at, and while they weren't great clubs by any means, they did allow me to work out if golf was going to be the sort of sport I'd stick with long-term.

Personally I would say no.

Your coming up to a brilliant time of the year to get fitted for some sticks, every club maker will be doing free demo sessions with their fitting kits. Yes they are expensive but its a great starting point for you to find what suits you, imo get along to a few sessions hit anything and everything then once youve got an idea of what suits you you can browse ebay and find what works for you, the wrong kit wont work for you and youl get disappointed quickly

If you don't want to pay for fitting on new clubs:

Go to a good pro shop (not AG) and get fit for a second hand set of forged irons that can be bent to your lie requirements. If you are of average proportions, you won't need them lengthened and shortening will be easy for a pro.

Can pick up a set of Mizuno irons (my preference) for not much over £200.

My teaching pro gave me my first set of irons, some old Hippo ones for the first 6mths I was learning. I then bought a starter set which lasted about a further year, in which time I was alteady sure it was for me, so I had also been getting clubs as presents etc. then finally moved on to a fitted set in my 2nd year.

Should also say, I've since given the hippos back to the pro and they have been handed round loads more people, and the father in law has my starter set as he's taken up golf now too!

Tiger to return at Augusta next week. 2 things i hope for, 1 that he plays well and doesn't post a huge score and 2 the media don't make a huge thing of it and ruin the coverage.

@esK' thanks will post pics up of sticks.

Shot my best round on Friday and broke 80 for the first time (+7,79)! 10 pars and 2 birdies. I play off 14 handicap.

I have to say that since buying the game golf device I mentioned recently, it's completely changed my perception on my distances and allowed me to hit more GIR and layup properly on Par 5's.

Also made a slight change to my grip and I'm pure striking the ball so much now and hitting so many more fairways with my driver. Think my fairway accuracy has gone up from 33% to 79% in a few weeks!

I'd highly recommend the game golf device as it gives you a really good analysis of your game and it's changing the way I think out on the course

Completely agree! If he does end up playing well I guess he deserves the coverage but I think regardless of how he plays they will always find a way to put the camera back onto him.

Looking forward to see how Speith plays having such good form going into the event. Oh and of course the Par 3 event tonight!

Well most of my boys have started out well
