Played today, hit about 90% of my shots at near 90 degrees...i hate this game :(

I was quite good before he changed my swing

Stick at it, things will begin to click into place. Take a look at some video tips online and see if you can pick up what you are doing wrong.

Failing that, I recommend a video lesson. They are awesome! The Pro will video you hitting some shots then play it back, showing your swing plane, your stance, weight transfer, mistakes, everything. It is very refreshing to be able to see what you are doing wrong, rather than just have someone tell you.

As has been said, stick at it, you can always have an off day.

I played yesterday in a society day, had a miserly 8 points at the turn and was last and felt like throwing the towel in, then something clicked on the 10th tee, the lights came back on in my head and i hit 24 points on the back 9 to secure 3rd place with 32 points.

As someone who has been a career slicer of the ball, i know how you feel.
I have managed turn my slice into a manageable little fade. I found the following instrumental in stopping the dreaded slice.
1. Alignment - Make sure your feet and shoulders and properly lined up, many slicers have they're shoulders pointing left, personally i have to really push out my left shoulder on address.
2. Swing plane - On your back swing try to take the club slightly inside, this will promote a draw shape to combat the accentuated fade shape.
3. Grip - many slicers grip the club too hard, relax that grip, personally i changed to a baseball grip, although i'm not saying grip type is relevant slicing.
4. Relax - Slicers find themselves in a vicious circle, they're anxious about slicing the next shot, therefore are tense rigid on address, this is counteractive to hitting good shots.
5. You can try addressing the ball with an open stance as if you're feet are aiming slightly right of the target, aim your club at the target and swing along the line of your feet.
6. Swing smoothly, don't whack the hell out of it, i guarantee you the ball will travel further and straighter.

Good Luck

I used to constantly slice the ball myself, until I went to the range a few times and worked out my problem - I was standing too far from the ball. My stance would correct my downswing, and the club would always hit the ball off-centre.

I had a game last week, and while keeping what I'd discovered in mind when setting up for a swing, I managed to hit 9 balls out of 10 perfectly straight! In fact, I played probably my best game ever. Managed to hole a 20yd chip, and got my first par on a par 4 hole :)

The odd trip down the range really can work wonders for your game.

With all the people we seem to have interested in golf we should think about having a meet up somewhere next year, possibly one of those De Vere Sunday driver things where you get a round of golf on sunday afternoon, evening meal, bed, breakfast and another round on Monday morning for £79. Or even just a meet up somewhere central for a round of golf and a few beers afterwards before everyone goes on their merry way?

I've been practising my alignment and putting stroke for the last hour on carpet and now sink everything within 8 feet, the wonders of youtube tuition. :D

Now you need to stand in the back garden under a hose pipe spraying water, on a length of the same carpet with all your golf waterproof gear on, jumpers etc so you are getting the water trickling down the back of your neck and drips coming off your hat onto the ball to distract you, and for good measure get a fan blowing on you full pelt and see how many you sink, if you get over 50% you are ready for Links golf in the british winter (i suppose i could also put summer in there too!!) :D

Just started to get back into golf after letting it slip for a few years when I went to uni. Got my handicap back after it lapsed, playing off 5 now. Find the long game hasn't suffered much at all, in fact I'm hitting it longer and straighter than ever, but I'm not nearly as accurate with chipping as I used to be. Practicing the short game is key really. In the bag at the moment:

Titleist 905R 10.5 Stiff Aldila NVS or Titleist 975 J-VS 8.5 depending on the course
Mizuno Fli-Hi 2 18 Degree
3-PW Mizuno Comp CT (had since juniors, 1-1.5 inches short now so far too high ball flight)
TaylorMade Black RAC 52 Degree GW
TaylorMade Chrome RAC 56 Degree SW
TaylorMade Black RAC 60 Degree LW
Ping Zing G2i Putter

Good idea kefkef, you can count me in, I don't mind helping out if we can get the numbers. Having said that my golf game is decidedly dodgy just at the moment, so perhaps I can have a slightly inflated handicap? ;)

Played the monthly medal this weekend and after a brightish steady front 9 (3 over), my form evaporated coming in and I finished on a slightly disapointing 82 (10 over). It seems I am lacking any sort of consistancy at the moment especially on the green, too many three putts. And what really killed me was a triple on the 13th where I hit a hosel rocket wedge from only forty yards out!!

i've got a trip to the forest of arden this weekend with a few mates. got 2 rounds, 1 on the aylesford on sunday then another on the big one - the arden course! anyone been? what's it like?

i'd also be up for a OCUK golf society thing - would be fun :)

Hey guys, just thought I would chirp in here too! Posted a while back about being given a set of irons (Hippo Beast graphites) and most needed consumables by my brother's father-in-law as I'm trying to get back into golf, needed a utility and driver to really compliment what I have and just ordered the 2 :)

Went for a low price but apprently pretty good performing brand in Ben Sayers (Hoping I don't get shot down now)

Went for the M1 12 degree Driver and the M8 07 17 Degree Rescue/Hybrid club :) Came in under £50 so was within the budget I set myself as I've not been back in the game for long at all :)

Its not the price, its what you can do with them :)

I was at our local course today when a chap rolled up to the range with his Titleist irons and turned his nose up at my Mizzis. Safe to say I was laughing after I could hit further and straighter with my PW then he was going with his 6 iron.

Also went on the putting green before the rain and sunk everything from inside 6 feet, so youtube tuition = win!
