I do think there is very much a feeling from people, certainly "lower" handicap players, I don't need lessons, I'll sort it myself. In some instances that's potentially true. I'm 8.8, solid putter, good sand player. I know with a bit of help I can potentially get down to 6 next year, that's my aim. I wanted to get some lessons, ultimately to be more consistent. I'm not going to be able to hit a fade or a draw on cue, not bothered about that, I want to be able to 80% of the time know it's going straight! I'm going to hit some bad shots and I have no issues accepting that, but for me I feel I've stalled out at 8.8 for now on my own and happy to "ask" (pay) for a bit of help and pointers.

There is a very much a feeling from singe figure players that they don't need lessons/help.

I can only speak for myself but when I was a single-figure I was obsessed with lowering it and would take advice from anyone who offered it including pros. Sadly, twenty years later and playing at best once per week, I have accepted that I am unlikely to ever get back down there again not because I won't take advice but because I'm an old dog unwilling to learn new tricks.

I know if I practiced better and played more, and played at fewer courses, I could put in better scores but I don't have the time and I like playing wherever I can get a game. I can't imagine being a one-course player.

Another lesson today.... Again really good simply stuff, but a stark improvement on my swing path....

Trackman data is very good and really shows this....

Had me working on a 3 ball drill - similar to this - https://www.golfpracticeplans.co.uk/three-ball-golf-drill/

Club path prior to this was averaging -7.2 degrees (over about 15 swings) - so 7.2 degrees "over the top"

3 ball drill - club path averaged -4.8 degrees over 14 shots.... huge improvements.

Was 136 yard carry/143 rollout then 142 yard carry/152 roll out with improved path. Grouping was way tighter and straighter as well. (very cold today and not normalised in the wind!)

So that's me - 3 lessons out of the 6.... Basically he stops teaching through Dec/Jan - so booked back for 4th lesson in Feb to see how things going. Leaves me 2 other lessons from the block to do what I want - that might be bunker/putting/short game etc. However, he also will convert the 2 lessons into a walk round for 9 holes which I think is another excellent idea.

Really impressed with progress and coaching.....

What club was you using for this improvements?
glad you're seeing some improvements.

I think I'm going to have some lessons after xmas. Need to find a reputable pro who I can use.
just to assess my swing and make improvements.

Ordered my new weapons today. Won't be delivered until Feb so that gives me a couple months with my old Pings to use through winter.
Also bit the bullet with a local pro who has a good reputation and went ahead with some lessons.
Had a good chat with him about what Titleist said with my swing changing and my current pings not being set right. Ping could adjust these for me etc but wanted some new tech so an early xmas present for myself.

Had a tee time today for 11:12. Turned up half an hour early to find out a society had been booked to play before us and an additional four players had arrived as well so we ended up having to go off the tenth half an hour late :( Had a truly awful round of muddy tees, fairways, greens, balls, trolley, feet, etc. and just not having a good time. Oh well. Off to Thailand (fingers crossed for pre-flight covid tests) where my next round will hopefully be a lot more pleasant.

Just my 7 iron at the moment - was bloody cold so swing speed and ball speed down a bit on my normal but that happens when i'm concentrating on the teaching rather than just free swinging on the course.

Went for a fitting on the weekend.
I'm 4 months into playing golf and loving every moment, didn't realise how technical the game is and the data you can look at to improve things.
Always felt like I was never striking down on my irons and had this confirmed during the the trackman session.

Still only able to have an attack angle of around +1 degree, which is probably due to me practicing my driving so much recently, as an upward attack angle is good for that.
Ended up purchasing the Taylormade Sim2 Max irons 5-Sw.
Went from the hand-me-down Nike Ignite irons, hitting 120-130 yards carry (7I) to 140-150 yards with the Sim2s and more consistently straighter. I tried the Ping g425's, but felt they were heavier and wasn't able to get a comfortable swing.
I believe my settings are:
Right Handed
Stiff (either 85-95g shaft)
Grip: Standard (+2 tape)
Lie: was either +2 or -2, I'll check when they arrive. My nikes were going right regularly, which meant the toe was hitting the turf first, causing my clubhead to open.

Love how tech stuff can help you get the ball launching further.
The shop offers a £25 for 30 mins trackman session, so I can go back once I have my clubs to see if I've managed to improve my striking attack angle through my driving range practice.
Such a fun game!

Brilliant. Once you get into the technical side of things it really makes sense on how you hit a club etc and where you need to improve.
Best way to improve is to have fitted clubs. Even if they turn out to be standard everything at least you then know when you're striking a ball wrong it's you and not the club.
But saying that, as you improve or get older your swing will change and the clubs will no longer be matched to you. As I found out with my fitting. My Pings were fitted 8 years ago and now were adding to my fade because my swing etc had changed.
As with your Nikes. You were going right a lot which turns out to be the club and not you. I'd say from that you are 2deg up which keeps the toe up from the floor.

Your new Sim Max Irons will also be a lot stronger lofted to aid with distance. Once you start striking the ball better you'll notice that 7iron carry go upwards of 160+ maybe even further.

as for the trackman session. £25 seems a bit steep. Have a look for trackman driving ranges near yourself. I have once called The Three Hammers (Wolverhampton) and it's £10 for an hour with unlimited balls.

Yes I have a lesson Friday and the weather looks cold. I imagine this is going to hinder me slightly. I hope they have heaters :D

Thanks mate, appreciate your comments, especially from an experienced golfer!
I said trackman, but I think it was something like QC Quad or whatever the other brand name is (£30k device he said). It needed some stickers to be put on the club to track the swing and impact angles.
I've seen other trackman stats and none of them seemed to track as many stats as this one.

Do you know if the cheaper places track these kinda stats? Be interested to find out before booking places I guess...

Very few ranges will offer that level of detail. The standard TopTracer type range is based purely on Doppler lasers and give no date about the strike whatsoever.

There are devices that claim to for varying degrees of investment. Garmin R10 gets adequate reviews but is considered cheap at >£500

no trackman doesn't have that level of data.

what club was you hitting there?

The one above is a GC Quad, trackman has most of all the same stuff (see below for my data from Thursday for one of my shots)

Trackman doesn't need stickers on the club face, where as they suggest the Quad does need that.

I believe the newer trackman 4 does also now do all the strike points on the face etc.

Some good numbers there @booyaka

have you got your new clubs yet?

Nope....I haven't really bothered to chase them up either. I'm heading up to Affordable Golf on Friday this week for a Free Titleist Ball fitting so I'll get an update then.

Saw an advert on Facebook for a free ball fitting and thought - why not. I tend to play pro V anyway so will be interested to see if anything else stands out.

Did they give you a rough lead time?

I had an email from Scottsdale Golf yesterday offering my 10% discount on my next order. Literally 2 days after spending £1100 with them.
so I've sent as cheeky email asking for some ProV1's as I could have saved £110 on my clubs.
