The garmin r10 is immense!
I love the stats. I can easily see where I’m going wrong now and I can focus on fixing these elements.
The really cool thing is the course play. I now take it to the range and set it up behind me and play through some local golf courses I know, as it tracks my shots super accurately!

Anyone got any tips for increasing club head speed?

my 7i is around 75mph to 80mph if I swing my hardest.
My driver is around 85-95mph, again swinging my utmost hardest.

hard to say - there are "speed training" items online - no idea how effect they are or not.
Gym/your own fitness etc - Again - not sure how much this would improve.

Try a couple of lessons first - May be lengthen your backswing would help but again - take some advice/coaching.

Feeling good with recent grip/swing changes.

Played yesterday in the winter medal and was hitting driver unreal! Even for the first time in my life, a lovely high raking draw that split the fairway at 289 yards in the wet/sodden ground!

Going to keep working away over the winter time and excited about next year already!!

blinking hell, that's hell of a drive, fair play!
I've only just broken 210 yards and that's been a one off for me, although I'm only 66KG in weight, so lacking major power in reality.
Just joined a gym, so that should help with core strength. When does next year golf season officially start?

It never ends:p:p

Depends really - most clubs start proper comps/medals around April time normally...

How old are you?
Swing speed will also be a factor based on age. Especially for us amateurs.

I'm 43 and only 5ft 7". 80kg, My average 7 iron swing speeds 89mph on average. My average Driver distance is 256y (mini driver)
It's also based on technique. Some pro golfers who are slender and short still generate tremendous power through technique. Francesco Molinari is roughly 5ft 7". 72kg but smashes it almost 300 yards

That's good to know!
I'm super new to the game, I'm 39 years old. Still fairly young I guess
I'm sure it'll be technique at this stage, as I barely switch my weight during impact, which I know I have trouble with, but working hard to fix.

Technique will be the biggest factor as an amateur for distance/swing speed etc.

I'm 6ft3/88kg/45 years old.... Average 7 iron swing speed around 93/94mph. Average driver last year was around 265/270. I'm not the longest hitter as I create a lot of backspin which takes distance off but hoping to reduce that a little this year with new irons which in testing reduce spin by around 800-1000rpm on my 7 iron....

my new T100s took a little over 1200rpm off my backspin with my 7 iron. Av 8000rpm down to 6800rpm.
I'm hoping with a little better technique this could be down by another 300/400 and the 7 iron will be flying

A bit disappointed today - Local range/pro has a Skytrak that you can "rent" for an hour which is only £5 on top of the 100 ball price.

I thought I'd give it a try today. I guess it's certainly what you pay for counts....

Trackman/GC Quad - circa £15-£20k
Skytrak - £2k

It did a decent job of tracking the flight of the ball in terms of where it went and height etc. But spin numbers were just garbage with 8/9/pw/52 degree wedge etc... No swing path information, some side spin numbers which I've no idea where it came up with them from.

Tell me that I was hitting 105 yards with a full 52 degree wedge with spin of 4500rpm or less... Also it's very very particular where the ball is placed, a tiny tiny little red laser mark on the floor and it has to be precisely on it to work properly.

You could see the flight of the ball yourself so I'm not really sure where/what the Skytrak is supposed to do really.... Odd bit of equipment for sure.

Considering the Garmin R10 has swing path/spin numbers and all that for £500.

Not sure how SkyTrak does it's tracking, but the website says it takes images of the ball at impact.
I can only imagine if its just image tracking, then it could be easily manipulated by marks on the ball or bad lighting perhaps.

The R10 uses doppler radar, so sounds like it should be much more accurate overall, although I'm definitely no subject matter experts here!

Are the R10 spin numbers actual readings or are the calculated approximations based on clubhead / ball speed readings / launch angle ?

I remember reading a review a bout 6 months ago that said most of the numbers were calculated rather than actually measured ??

is there a list somewhere that shows what is measured v what is calculated. I have used the garmin g80 as a simple launch monitor and tbh it's garbage, it massively over estimates carry distance so if the R10 is just another fancy calculator then it's also another waste of 500 quid

My understanding is:

R10 measures seven data parameters directly:

  1. Ball speed: the speed of the ball immediately after impact.
  2. Club head speed: the speed of the club head at impact.
  3. Launch angle: of the ball relative to the ground.
  4. Launch direction: right or left of the target.
  5. Club path: the direction the club is moving at impact.
  6. Angle of attack: the vertical angle the club head is moving at impact.
  7. Backswing & downswing times: accuracy of 0.05 seconds.
The R10 derives several other metrics through calculations:
  • spin rate
  • spin axis
  • club face angle
  • observed ball flight range
The Garmin Golf app also displays the following metrics:
  • total distance
  • carry distance
  • smash factor
  • apex height
  • swing tempo

Finally - after 3 fitted sets and 8 months of waiting for various sets - (Ping i500's & Ping i210's - discontinued) - we have our new weapons...

  • Mizuno JPX 921 Forged 5-PW & UW
  • Nippon 105 stiff shafts, 0.5" longer and 2 degrees upright
  • Grey MCC Plus 4 grips with 3 layers of tape.
Can't wait to get out with them....
Bag taking shape - Just wedges to sort out now (54 & 58 probably) and we're ready to go...
