Question:
Handicap related: If I play at a different place to my club and I get a decent score, can I record that against my handicap scoring, somehow?
Normally, I just hand cards in at my club, usually after a competition game and it updates my handicap.

yes - that's the point of the new handicapping system.

You go to any course - and you handicap will be adjusted depending on the slope rating of the course. You can then elect to play a round via SGU app (scottish one and I presume english one is the same) - and it will be recorded against your handicap.

You will probably need someone to "sign" it off in the app - that's the way ours works.

Thanks mate, I guess I'll just need to do it in the app, rather than handing in the scores to the place I played?
The guy behind the counter was telling me that I needed to call up my club, advise them that I was playing BEFORE I played my round and only then, could I get a score handed in and I'd need to hand it into my own club to be effective against my HC.
It felt bizarre.
My only issue when I try to record my score, I need someone who has a handicap to vet the submitted scorecard on the Wales Golf app. None of my friends have handicaps! :)

I'm speaking from a SGU side of things....

In order to submit a General Play score, you must:

  • Register for your General Play score before you tee-off.
  • Follow the Rules of Golf and hole out every putt.
  • Play with at least one other person.
  • Play on a course with a current Course Rating and Slope Rating.
  • Play during an active season.
  • Ensure the round is in accordance with Rules of Handicapping.
After your round you must submit your General Play score while you are in the vicinity of the golf club/course on the same day you have played in order for it to count towards your WHS Handicap Index.

Failure to submit your score on the day may result in a penalty score being applied to your Handicap Index record.

Once successfully submitted you will receive an email confirming your score and it will also be shown as pending in your WHS Handicap Record.

Your Handicap Index will be updated at the end of each day. This means that when you open the Scottish Golf app the following day and click on My WHS Index, you will see the results from your General Play round.

Doesn't "technically" say that the person you play with MUST have handicapp - but I think it asks for Name/contact number for that person.

Again - this is SGU but can't imagine they are much different to other home nations

Video here is good as well.

Nice little app for you there.

Looks like the Wales app is more strict.
They have to be a user of the Wales Golf app, and you can only get a login for it through being a member of a club somewhere. Damn.

Turns out, I'm rubbish at a championship level course.
The fairways are vast and seem never ending. Started off with a couple of 8's and then a par here and there, but man, since I've pulled my back - I can barely hit the ball from the fairway!
Loved the course, just wish I was much better at the difficulty level. Massive greens, massive bunkers and massive lakes all around, very punishing!

keep at it Mark. Championship courses are tough at the best of times.

I had my 2nd lesson yesterday. Happy with progress on my swing.
Compared data to my previous lesson. From my previous swing was out-to-in @ 5 to 6deg.
Yesterday this was between 0.2 and 1.2deg. Lovely straight ball flight with a tiny baby fade. Flight looked lovely.
New clubs via trackman. 7iron. Averaging 169yards with an average spin of 6300rpm. Impressed tbh.

We then worked on my driver as I have felt this is a weakness. Interesting to know I was opening my shoulders too much and my back swing was very long. Need to work on a shorter back swing.
With my 11.5deg Mini Driver though I am averaging 245yards with 3200rpm and a swing speed of 103mph.
Positive going into the new season

My biggest issue atm is Chipping. I fear not making the green from anything above 100yards, as I either duff, shank, or just can't aim accurately with anything above a 9 iron.
I'm pretty happy with my long and mid game, if I could match up some accuracy up close I would feel I had completed golf.

Standing over the ball for 10ft away from the green terrifies me and I am more often than not pulling the putter.

Just throwing one thing out there, hoping to help.
Sounds like you may be afraid of overshooting the green? The tentative strike, usually makes players slow-down as they go to strike the ball, causing an inconsistent strike. It may just be a matter of keeping your pace through the ball for the wedges?

Cheers!
Been giving my back a rest and looking out the window at all this nice weather has been painful to say the least, cry. :D

You're 245 yards is something I inspire to reach. It's surely my technique, although 103mph is exactly the swing speed I got to when I sprained by back muscles. That's me full whack though, so won't be seeing that for another few months.

Yeah it's a multitude of problems, I have a decent set of Vokey wedges, but price doesn't = talent.
I have two styles of bad.. One I'll just knife it through the green, (this often happens when I try swinging to fast) and then I will have one where I duff the ground (often happens like you say when I pull out of the swing)

I now have a few nets in the garden and I'm trying to find anything that is repeatable and steady.
I've taking my right hand out of the golf grip and putting it much lower down steadies the club and give me a better chance of hitting consistently

The Pro said I've got great numbers for an 11.5deg club. Little bit more distance to get from it due to technique but I'm happy with my swing speed.
And to think it's not a full driver either. It's basically a big 3 wood. With a driver I reckon I could achieve around 265 average if only I could find a club/setup which I'm happy with.

Good numbers indeed.

....

I'm around 265 with Ping G425 Max at 10.5 - But spin rate is way too high (3500rpm average). I like the Ping - very forgiving, reasonable in terms of grouping as well. However, whilst I not searching for distance, I'm certainly leaving some out there as the spin numbers are around 3500rpm which is too high really for a driver so it tens to climb up, then drop out the sky a bit with very little run out.

I did promise myself I WOULDN'T spend any more money on clubs this year as I was happy with my bag but Ping was just off the shelve stiff shaft purchase last year and with my custom fitted Mizuno's irons I'm hitting them so well it's made me book a driver fitting later this week!!

Pro is happy to get numbers on my Ping, have a play with settings/weightings on it, then see if anything else is more suitable for me in terms of getting the spin numbers down a bit, that should increase the distance a little more.

Will see what happens

hahaha, it's so easy to get drawn into buying newer and nicer stuff.
Your numbers are high already, with high spin - it sounds like your launch angle isn't high enough? Meaning your not hitting up on it as much as you could, 2 ways to fix from what I understand - 1, tee the ball up higher and 2, have a little more spine tilt away from the ball.
Either that, or your shaft is a spinny one. Worth getting that checked out? Bringing those numbers down should give you more control and even moooore distance!

Another day down south and fitting finished at Silvermere. New toys purchased and now to wait for build and delivery.

Was originally meant to go TM Sim2 Max but couldn’t get them last year. Assumed would be fitted into Stealth irons as replacement but whilst they were ok they were too long and didn’t feel right. Carry was over 200 with the test 7 iron. I normally hit a long ball but was over 20 yards beyond my normal expected and preferred more control to the length.

Fitter suggested more options so we moved on and found that I really like the new Ping i525’s. Ordered in 4-PW with a couple of SM9 Vokeys (50 and 54) to fit the gap to my SM8 58 I bought last year.

Taking the 4 iron has meant I skipped out in a 5 wood for first time as it didn’t seem useful. Went for a G425 LST 3 wood for fairways and an alternative to my TM Sim2 driver when needed off the tee.

Bit of a mixed bag for manufactures but really pleased with what I hit and and the decisions made. Now just to wait for delivery day whenever that will be.

Cannot rate the service high enough for fitting at Silvermere. (Left handed golf side for me though)

Nice - I'm a mixed bag as well.

Current Ping Driver/3W, Corba Hybrid, Mizuno Irons and wedges, Scotty Putter.

Play what feels good - I have no issues with mixing it up

Yeah - I'm trying to hit up on the ball with a little spine tilt (last lesson I had worked on that) - Also teeing the ball up a touch more. However, even cranking the loft down on the driver, it then just launches too high.

At the moment - just can't find that "nice" launch window with current driver. It's either way too high or way too low - So will see what options I have re fitting and if nothing jumps out, I'll not be buying anything, but for an hour and £40 cost (£30 goes on your account at the shop!) - Worth finding out if there is any better options for me.

The i525s do look amazing. Great choice. I would have gone i210 until they removed them from their lineup.

I'm a mixed bag also:
Taylormade 300 mini driver
sim max 2 hybrids 19deg + 22deg
Titleist T200 5 iron
Titleist T100s irons 6 - GW
Ping glide wedges 52 - 58
Cleveland RTX 58deg (sand wedge)
Odyssey White Hot Pro putter

I am tempted to get fitted for a new driver and hybrids. I've never been fitted for these so always at the back of my mind if they're right for me.

Also my Glide wedges are now 7 years old. Time to upgrade them I think.
