Golf Thread

Since no one has answered, I will give it a uneducated opinion. I've been to society days but I've not obviously run one. However, I can take hazard a guess.

They normally our run by a few people or one person doing a few peoples jobs, depending on how big they are.
I found this with a Google.
  • Captain - Managing and communicating order of play; purchase of prizes; choice of skill prize holes at Captain's Day
  • Vice Captain - To stand in for Captain when absent and undertake all the Captain's roles
  • Fixtures Secretary - Booking venues and dates; choice of skill prize holes (except Captain's Day)
  • Secretary - Communicating event dates, venues and prices to members; tracking attendance to upcoming events
  • Handicap Secretary - Calculating and initiating all handicap changes after each qualifying event
  • Treasurer - Management of bank account and payment of balances at events
  • Chairman - Ensuring the £2 draw is completed at each event; collect and collate cards and results post event
Although frankly some that is an exaggeration as one person could do most of that. The hardest job is going to be Secretary/Treasurer as it involves the most work.

You will need to charge a yearly fee (best way to make money for the pot if people pull out) to cover prizes, event hire for awards, your time and effort, membership to the AGM/EGM etc
I'd go ask another society how much you need to cover as if it's not enough you could be out of pocket guessing.

Have a read of this, it should help you a fair bit.

As above - Speak to English Golf Union/SGU - they should have most of the information you need.

Honestly - Are you SURE you want to do it?? Not better just joining an existing place/club/online golf handicap system....

Sounds a good idea but knowing what my local golf club is like, the "politics" and in fighting can be ridiculous at times.

Windy day out there but good to get out and knock a ball around in 2hours for 18 holes. Shortened course with some trees down etc.

Hitting new irons superb at the moment - really pleased with that.

Did find it funny in the wind today:

198 par 3 - 7 iron to 10ft downwind.

two holes later - Par 3 - 168 - 19degree rescue club to about 6ft. howling into wind.

Par 3 later - 137 yards, howling into wind - 5 iron to 20ft and drained the putt!!

Feel that I can control my ball way way better in the wind compared to my old irons which use to just balloon up massively.

Today round was one of those rounds that made me want to give up golf. It's a shame I've been practicing a lot and had got my HC down from about 22 to 16-18 (based on my phone app not official)
However I shanked, sliced, duffed every single shot today. So much so I've booked in a 30 min lesson to help me, I've gone as far as I can by using the range and watching YouTube.
I've need help getting rid of years and years of muscle memory that comes over the top.

Worth booking a few lessons if you find the pro/lesson useful. I booked 6 lesson (for the price of 5) at my local pro. Had 4 now (August, September, October and Feb) - got one next month and one in April. Been an unreal change to my game/swing. Totally worth it so far - feeling much better about the changes made - only really a couple of changes, nothing major but hitting my irons really well at the moment.

I've just booked a second lesson following on from my first one in Nov.
Worked through the winter on my takeaway and delivery.
Fixed the slice to now slowly fixing the hook.

Unfortunately my mini driver feels odd now. Unable to control the club face so will discuss this at my next lesson. All other clubs are fine just the mini driver.
Personally I feel the shaft isn't stiff enough. Feels whipy at the head

Had it yesterday, I was sceptical that he could make any major changes to the way I play.
I thought I was gona get the same crap as I've had with previous teachers, telling me to swing slowly on an inside path, which has notoriously been bad advice for me because I cannot replicate a slow swing naturally at any sort of pace.
But he explained that actually I wasn't swinging badly I had bad knee bend and sway which was causing 50% of my issue.
Actually really enjoyed the lesson it made a lot of sense and I was hitting it so much cleaner. I have another booked in a couple of weeks, so I can practice what I've learned.

Managed to get a round of golf with my Dad today. Was good to be out with him again as it's been probably 6 years since he's played on a golf course for various reasons.

Yellow tees but full greens, I was only 2 over through 12 (even with a sore back I hurt at the gym earlier this week).

Then doubled 13 & 14!!, parred 15/16/17 and birdied 18th for 5 over. Pretty happy with that for early season golf.

Walked off after 5 at Birchwood Park today. Waiting on every shot to play, watching the groups in front faff about as they waited for groups 300yds in front of them to move, groups not ringing bells to indicate they're clear. A two-ball two groups in front of us waited and waited to play and then having hit their tee shots, one then went to the back of the teebox to take a ****.

Every time I have ever played there it has been slow. Never again.

I've had this numerous times at West Midlands Golf Club. They pair you up if you're a two ball just to get people in.

Depending who you're paired with can make the round terribly slow and frustrating. For them as well I'm sure.
Nice course just not enjoyable when it's so slow and full

Had 4 hours to kill the other day whilst waiting on my daughter at her monthly Ballet classes.

Went to CC Golf - Golf equipment &Indoor Simulator Centre

Great place - really impressive setup - Booked 2 hours - Played 18 holes at Pebble Beach and 18 holes at Spyglass. Way better than aimlessly smashing balls at a range - you need to work your whole bag, penalties in the rough/bunkers etc - really good fun/practise time.

Also traded in some old clubs which they paid in cash - probably similar prices to online companies etc - tried selling privately but too much hassle with people wanting to pay stupidly low prices.

They had a lovely Mizuno HMB 3 iron with a stiff staff - was like a rocket - beautiful thing - hit it 240 on the fly (almost as far as 3 wood!!) - was very tempted but probably want 4 iron version of it. Will keep eyes peeled.

Tee shot on 18th at Pebble - bailed out a little right but it's dry!!

Question:
Handicap related: If I play at a different place to my club and I get a decent score, can I record that against my handicap scoring, somehow?
Normally, I just hand cards in at my club, usually after a competition game and it updates my handicap.

Ermmmm. I guess you can hand that into your club, that course would have a slope index to adjust your score and then apply it to your handicap.
But I'm unsure, HC are harder to understand than the new offside rules.
