Golf Thread

Gap wedge/ Lob wedge.

How useful would you say they are, and do you think it is worth buying them if you are a reasonably high handicapper?

Ive just discovered this thread and this reply is a bit late but I would be of the opinion that since you are a 'reasonably high handicapper' do you really actually need either of those clubs? when i was a higher handicapper albeit a junior at the time as well the pitching wedge and sand wedge were more than enough to be carrying around in my bag. Whenever I needed a greater degree of loft then I could open up the clubface of my sandwedge but making sure I played the shot as if i was in a bunker and got the ball up and over the way i wanted it.

If you're a higher end handicapper then the money you dont spend on a club could be more fruitful with a few lessons from the pro to correct or improve your technique which in the end will improve your score more than any single club.....well maybe barring the putter (50% of your score comes on the green) ;)

Regarding shoes, I had a pair of Footjoy Greenjoys and found they cracked really badly across the toe and my feet were getting very wet in them after only a few months use.

This time around I went for Nike, and they are great. Every bit as comfortable if not more so, and my feet have been bone dry in them, even last week when it poured on us!! And only £40 into the bargain.

I would recommend the Nike range to anyone, but you would be best to call into a shop and try them on first, as the first pair of Nike I tried on were far too narrow fitting for me.

In terms of footwear your shoes shouldn't be cracking that soon. How do you care for your shoes? Do you clean them after every round, or put shoe trees in them to keep the material as it should be. You mentioned that the Nikes were too narrow for you implying you have relatively wide feet? I on the other hand have quite narrow feet and by looking after my shoes as mentioned above they usually last me years. I use footjoys. The only wear I get in them is some slight creasing which eventually will crack as yours have but apart from that its just the spikes needing replaced.

Footjoys are always a solid choice imo. I've had a couple of pairs and both were very good in terms of quality and price. I've got a pair of Callaways at the moment which are comfortable but they're far from waterproof anymore, this after a year or so of probably two rounds a week.

Disapointing 9 holes on the weekend. Only had time for 9 due to going out late, it's disapointing as it could have been so much better, went round in 40 with a par of 35 (3043yds sss of 69 for the whole course) but out of those 40 shots, 20 of them were putts, ended up with 1 birdie, 3 pars and the rest bogeys, but in total had the chance for 7 birdies and only converted 1 of them. Greens were a bit rubbish though, as was commented on by a few people in the clubhouse.

Sounds like you have my problem at the moment kefkef. I could have had an awesome score in the monthly medal yesterday, but once again far too many three putts.

Went round in 80 (par 72 css 72, 6370yards), if I could have putted might have been a 74-75 :(

As it happens though I still came in 3rd in the first division, so it's not all bad :)

Played on saturday morning in the howling wind and rain.

Interesting start!

Par, Birdie, Double Bogey, Double Bogey, Double Bogey, Double Bogey

Pretty much then just resigned myself to a NR, but played on and ended up shooting net 73. CSS was 75!! So ended up getting cut again 0.4.

Started the year at 12.9 and now down to 10.5!! Would love to make single figures before the end of the season but only about 4 medals left for the year.

At the moment i'm absolutely astounded. Just got back in from the range at my course.

Three weeks ago i shot a gross 71 (par 70), next week a 73 in the medal, yesterday a 76 and today on the range i hit about 40% shanks 40% hooks 10% tops and 10% average.... This game is absolutely terrible when it goes wrong, just wanted to curl up in a ball and cry!

I think i'm going to go have a lesson as something very minor has occured that has had a major affect on my swing and i can't figure it out for the life of me.

You do not want to hit the ball on the up! (Except with a driver)

Real distance and control only comes from hitting down on the ball - ball, turf - and this squeezes the ball against the ground, generating back spin and distance.

Yeah, I should've been more clear, that advice was mainly for driving.

As for the FJ's I had, cleaned after every round, left to air and dry slowly too, rather than close to a radiator or in the hotpress.

They cracked across the toe very quickly and for that reason I won't buy another pair without stitching along the toe. Not saying I won't buy FJ's again, just not that style.

Oh, FWIW, played today. 1st 9 like a total muppet, something like +17, then someone obviously turned on the golfer switch and I had a back 9 of +5. What a strange, frustrating game golf is :D

Went to the range again tonight.

Hit 40 balls, 10 went straight, 30 went miles MILES right (not a hook, just right from the hit) its because im not rolling my hands over. Need to get used to that, it feels weird to roll my hands over during the swing.

If you're pushing them out right with very little spin, then there is something else wrong in your setup. I highly doubt it's just that you're not releasing properly.

2 days into Weston Golf Week and i've shot two 38's, 3rd place in Mondays event (my partner was 2nd with 40) and i was lying 2nd when i left the club today, so fingers crossed :D
Tomorrow is the big one, a 4 man Bowmaker Stableford (best 3 from 4), i'm playing with a 5, 11 and 14 handicappers so a good mix with myself off 21, can't wait, hope the weather holds up.

:)

Right ive just started playing golf again after about a 4 year break, now i wasnt a pro then and im not now i managed to get round a course in about 100-110 strokes. Since ive restarted ive noticed off the tee with a driver ive developed a very bad slice to the right, it starts off straight but heads right very soon. i guess i average about 150+ yards a drive which im fine with its just the bad slice which wasnt a problem before. any tips i can try out on the driving range for that.

the other problem is getting the ball up with the short irons, before my short game was one of my best shots but now i am really struggling to get the ball up even with a PW im hitting it low most the time which is a real pain. anything i can be trying for this? ive tryed moving the ball around in my stance but its still not spot on

As far as your driving goes try the following things:

+Make sure you are hitting around the ball if you get me instead of accross the ball which will make you slice

+Take time in your set up making sure everything is right

+Are you rotating at your hips this gives more power and helped me when i was slicing the ball

And with your short irons make sure you take a small divot so you definatly get the ball up in the air and make sure your not opening the club face too much as your more likely to thin it!

Can anyone recommend a good cart bag? Around 80-100 to spend. Been looking at a sunmountain c1 bag which i fancy but wondering what other options there are.

Thanks

What grip does everyone use?

I've always used overlapping but have recently started experimenting with the interlocking grip, as I actually find that it feels more secure yet more comfortable at the same time. Results are similar and I've only just started using it, so I think that's a good sign.

I use the overlap, been using it for 6 years now and am not complaining.
