Golf Thread

welcome back to the game. I look forward to the posts of frustration after a round

After being away for so long I'd go down the second hand route for now although I'm a big advocate for getting fitted properly. But whilst you work on your swing fixes second hand would be perfect for now. Then once you're back into the thick of it get fitted and treat yourself.

Fitting costs vary. I found myself a Titleist fitting event, run by Titleist themselves, which was free but I know many places charge.
Depending which clubs you like the look of I'd find a similar event or a very reputable fitter who may charge.

Aha there's no point getting frustrated being where I'm at skill wise. Just got to work on it best I can and take each hole as it comes! Been playing twice a week and can feel a touch of consistency creeping back, but still a looooooong way to go.

How do you feel about American Golf? There's one over the road from me and I'm tempted to nip in there to get some advise in the way of clubs etc. Heard they can be a bit inconsistent store to store though. I think either way you're right, second hand is the best route. Just need to know what shafts and the like to aim for. My current clubs where literally picked up from a repair shop. Old Slazengers and Hippos that feel incredibly short and whippy with almost no grip left...

Finally got my sub-50 on the course I play regularly (for 9 holes of course!).

Got very stiff on the last and posted a 9 on a par 5 which was very frustrating.

Any tips for staying loose?
I found when I first got back into it the last 2 holes were a real slog. Over time you just adjust to it and have regularly played 36 holes without feeling much towards the end. Fluids help.

I've recently been fitted for my driver and hybrids at American Golf @ The Three Hammers complex. I've had mixed experience with AG. I have found them to be pushy or not really advising you right and pushing you towards a set brand (normally TaylorMade).

No harm in going to find out your swing speed and then seeing if you need regular or stiff when purchasing second hand

Yeah I suppose there's no harm in nipping in. Can't afford to buy anything at the moment anyway so they can push all they want xD

is there a preferred place to buy second hand these days? I've heard Rick Shiels talk about GolfBidder but I really am clueless. Would rather buy somewhere that provides a decent warranty as opposed to FB or Gumtree.

Either Golfbidder or https://www.golfclubs4cash.co.uk

Had my first lesson yesterday, only been the range 3/4 times but thought I'd get lessons in early to prevent bad habits.

Immediate difference. I knew my posture and swing was off but didn't expect it to make such a huge difference. In the space of an hour gone from either hitting the top of the ball or just hitting far right to hitting it straight and to the mid/bottom. I'm still not getting quite the right hit as I'm not consistently skimming the ground before contact but a damn site better than I was before.

As expected as well he heavily suggested I get fitted as my clubs are just too short for my size. My 2nd hand set can see me out for now but a proper set will have to be on the cards soon.

Just had an interesting experience.

Played the local council run golf course. Thou I have a good round overall, on the second hole, off the tee. I hit the ball, and it went quite a bit left. Then at the last second a guy appeared from some trees, which line the left side (so I didn't see the guy before I hit, and shouting at the point I saw him, would have not helped)

the guy then comes over and tries to intimate me (i.e. standing within 10 cm's of me), and shouting at me saying I almost hit him, and that because it's a council golf course, dog walkers etc have full access right, thou I don't dispute this (as there are generally many people crossing all the time) I said it's a golf course, and you need to take responsibility for any balls that may be coming towards yourself, as i believe golfers in law have the priority?

Has anyone experienced a similar situation before? Am I correct that golf players have priority?

I believe walkers have right of way through a golf course although etiquette of walkers is quite high and they allow play of golfers before continuing their walk.
But on the whole we must allow them through first before playing.

So after threating it a bit recently I finally managed to beat 80 last night. I came up the last, a par 4 needing a par to get 79. Driver straight down the middle - boom! Left myself 80 yards in and unfortunately pulled my chip left straight into the bunker. A nice bunker shot out left me a 15 footer for 79. Surprisingly I managed to box it and bang my first sub-80 round.

well played - but please don't EVER use the term "box it" every again....holed it/canned it/dropped it in - are all acceptable.

Box it - no, just no.

Went to the range again yesterday, second time ever and first time with my own clubs. Did 100 balls with fairly mixed results, some shots that I consider pretty good (mostly going for just straight with some height, ignoring distance for now) and a whole bunch where it went really low/skimmed the ground (is this 'thinning it'?)

Still feels like I need a whole bunch more practice and kinda worried about going to play a whole round but looks like I'll bite the bullet and do that sometime in the week...

Planning to go do a 'pitch and putt' (9 hole par 3 thing) nearby tomorrow but also tempted to go out to the range and hit another 50-100 balls today :-p

Played this morning and I could tell I've not hit a ball for 9 days.

Very poor ball striking - baking hot, playing the shorter of the 2 courses today (Seafield) - Net 71 (only a par 68) - course is baked out for sure - hit 324 yard drive up 13th!

Nothing to write home about - New 7w was nice to hit - very high flight which is exactly what I'm looking for.

Nice, I'm happy when my drives carry past 100 yards on the range, 324 just sounds crazy :-p

Went back to the range for another 100 balls a bit ago, way too hot, but good session, felt way better than yesterday so definitely glad I went :-)

Baked out fairways and down breeze a touch.....Hit it fairly low as well - probably landed about 220 and ran another 100 yards!!

Standard is around 265/270.

I have the premium edition tech (camo one). It's done a full year now and been dragged around muddy and soggy courses in Norfolk and bone dry dusty courses this summer and it's still in top nick. It cleans up really easily and all the zips and pockets are as good as the day a i bought it. Best 239 quid I ever spent TBH

Hey @wildman how do you have your clubs positioned within the bag. Curious to see how you have yours arranged.

Putter goes in the side tube, leaves one divider free in the bag which usually has a telescopic extending ball retriever.

Longest iron is 7. I am using Cobra T-Rails as I was getting back into golf after a very long time away. I have got a fitting coming up soon for JPX921 Hot Metals so layout will probably change once I get those. Nearly half the clubs in my bag have head covers as i use a lot of Hybrids. Planning on chaning the 2H out for a 5W as i don't use it much anymore. I used to take the 2H off the tee while I was working on my driver technique. New set will like be 5i-SW including GW from the 921 range, D, 3W, 5W and 3H and 4H.

wow that's an interesting layout. Do you not find your clubs are hitting each other?

I've found the putter well is too short and only covers half the putter length. only downside to the bag.
