Golf Thread

My original plans for the weekend didn't include golf but then things changed and my usual group had a fully booked 4 ball so I finally got around to booking/playing my local club Whitley Golf Course. It's a 'small' 9 hole course with a second set of tees to mix it up again for the back 9, I booked all 18 but ended up only doing 9 as it's my first time playing golf without a buggy (or trolley) so I was walking and carriyng the clubs around which is somewhat harder than jumping in a buggy :p

Pretty nice course though, quite tight at points with trees including off the 1st Tee and varied enough to be enjoyable. I scored 54 for the 9 and felt like I hit some pretty nice shots overall so happy with that :)

They do a 9 hole only booking for £12 so might be tempted as an occasional mid-week round. Or even they do membership for £440 (plus £40 joining) which would get me the handicap stuff (if they do handicaps that high  ) and a County Card which seems pretty decent from what I've seen.

If all you want is an official handicap you can sub to iGolf by England Golf for £40 per year. Includes all the EG benefits a club member gets and can input scores from any course into the system to generate your index. I did this for 8 months before I joined my local.

Yeah, some of the guys I usually play with have done that, honestly it's not a huge incentive to me right now although it's kinda tempting cause I'm a stats guy :p

I actually got the price wrong as well, it's £400 + £40 joining fee or £440 including. The temptation is mostly for the 'free' golf, even once a week at £12 for 9 holes which could easily be done it'd work out cheaper to join without counting the other benefits mentioned, it'd also then probably lead to me playing even more than once a week, and the more I play the better I'll get :)

Played yesterday in our team match, we won our doubles tie but the team lost over all 4-2 against our big rivals....

Did laugh a lot standing on the 17th tee when we looked back and saw one of the boys behind us with one of these "follow me" trollies (Stewart brand I think and about £1500) - helping look for someones ball in the burn/stream and obviously the trolley got to close and went straight into the burn....

He had to go in and fish it all out.... Much amusement at the dinner afterwards - to be fair the trolley was still working perfectly even after going into the water!!

Looking at a CT6 Power caddy - don't need gps version but like the idea of a small trolley when folded up.....

Just had a look at the price for the lols, £800! I think I'll just carry my clubs

I think the CT6 is around £600... I've got £100 on my account with the pro at the local shop from earlier this year finishing well in an Open, plus I've got a lovely Ping bag that I don't need that I won in a raffle so will sell that for around another £100/£120 etc so in fairness more like £400 or so.

I literally got a new motocaddy M1 DHC last week brand new for £580 folds up small, it has down hill control and also E brake. Nice trolley to be fair and its expensive sure but not too crazy. I remember comparing both brands and figure the DHC M1 was better value.

Theres 2 on stock where i bought mine, DM me if you want to know the site.

Loving the man maths there :D

I guess coming into golf as a cheapskate is skewing things a bit, even if I do keep looking at things like £200+ woods/drivers, or upgrading my ancient Fenix 3 with a new Garmin Fenix and their club tags for like ~£1200 :p

Today I went to the range in Bristol, well there's probably more than one so specifically the Bristol Golf Centre in north Bristol by the M32. First time using a range with shot tracking, and power tee, fancy :p Probably would help going when I'm not sore/day after a lesson when I can barely hit the ball tbh but kinda interesting nonetheless.

Whilst there I tried on some shoes at the American Golf (and looked at the fancy new clubs, want.) found a bit of an issue, I was all set to buy some proper golf shoes as I'm currently using 'trail running' type shoes which I'm occasionally noticing the lack of waterproofing but all the shoes I tried on weren't wide enough! I usually wear an 8.5-9 and tried on a Rife, Under Armour and Sketcher shoe in a size 9 and all were too narrow, the Sketcher was better but I still felt some pressure immediately in the mid-foot so no way that'd work for 4 hours of playing golf.

They had a footjoy measurement plate and according to that I'm a size 6.5 and extra extra wide which just seems so very wrong... I generally buy Asics trainers in a size 9 and they are slightly too long but not 2.5 sizes too long...

I know some brands do wide and even extra-wide but they didn't have any of those in stock to try and kinda wary of buying online and having to return it cause awkwardness... Gonna try a local place that I've been meaning to visit to see but does anyone have any thoughts on shoes?

Get a shotscope v3 for £139 - tags included - Don't bother with Garmin. Shotscope is literally the best thing I've bought in years for golf.... Could sell it for £300/£400 and it's still worth it.

Footjoy usually do wide/extra wide. Avoid Nike - always very narrow. I've got puma/UA ones and not had any issues with fit.

Yeah, a mate has the Shotscope and it's a bargain, my only real issue is that it's just a golf watch and nothing more. I've already got the Garmin Fenix 3 and use it for general smart watch stuff and Cycling/Running/Swimming (when I actually do any of that :p) as well as Golf, but the golf is so very basic, hence being tempted. Really not sure I'll do it just for golf but I have already decided that if/when my Fenix 3 actually dies I will buy the latest Fenix or similar as a replacement so meh...

Been checking some stuff online and the local place I was talking about (Tony Valentine in Corsham) list various wide options so definitely gonna get out there and have a look in person.

Forgot one question though, spiked or spikeless, the guy at American Golf was pushing me towards spiked as we're heading towards winter, which I guess makes sense but not sure...

Not had spiked shoes in years personally.

Any decent "spikeless" generally has more than enough grip these days....

I've got - PROADAPT ALPHACAT Golf Shoes & IGNITE Fasten8 Golf Shoes. Both very good.

Old pair of UA HOVR shoes from about 3 years ago which I use for the range/muddy practice session - still going on strong.

None of them have spikes

Just catching up on the thread.

CT6. I got mine at £599 when they first came out last year. I see they've jumped up £100. IMO still worth it.

ShotScope V3. Again got mine last year for £179. Used the tracking for a little while but then stopped. I need to use this feature to get some data on my game.

Shoes: I've Stromberg Tempo Spikeless and also spiked for winter. My main shoes are Ecco S-Three Gore-Tex. Both extremely comfortable. Ecco edges it and has so much grip.

I tend to use my Apple Watch, with GolfpadGPS (premium ($20/year)) - I tap my watch before every shot and it records every hit and all distances, as well as the usual strokes gained data. I can see all of my club distances slowly go up every few matches, which is very good for me to see.

Shoes, I have sketchers which have Arch support, which I find very comfortable, although not waterproof I've recently discovered :p

My Garmin is so basic being an ancient one it basically just gives distance to the green, I can measure shots but it's a few clicks to start the process and tbh I can never be bothered :p Saying that I really don't need more, it's nice at times to get more info like 170 yards to that stream or whatever but it's not that important for me right now.

Did another 9 at the local course again today, scored worse but it was good to get out there and play more golf although definitely looking forward to having a day off tomorrow after 4 days in a row.

Really quite tempted to join but at the same time I'm a bit wary that in a couple of weeks or a month or two when it's later autumn/winter time I won't be wanting to play much at all which seems like a waste, so thinking I'll aim for 9 holes a week over the next 4 or so then maybe join from the 1st November depending how I feel...

Dundonald - what a track - even this time of year - stunning. Course is not that punishing, but the greens/green complexes are very very demanding.

Lots of raised greens, fall of the sides etc - greens are lighting quick as well.

+9 on the front nine.

Then suddenly birdie 2 on the 11th, birdie 3 on the 12th and struck 7 iron from 145 into the wind on the 13th to about 15 ft and holed that for 3 birdies on the trot. Don't think I've ever had 3 back to back birdies.

Did have a 35ft birdie putt on 14th but with about 8ft of break down the hill - ran it 8ft past and missed it on the way back   - nice 3 putt and that was it.

Overall +15 on that course off medal tees and a bit of breeze was a decent score.....

Had my final lesson, for now at least, today.

Good news, backswing is good and overall looking a lot better than when I rocked up three weeks ago. Bad news, still not getting the compression on the ball that I should be. Need to clear the hips out of the way earlier on the downswing and get the hands out in front.

Feels like three steps back to go one forward at the moment :(:p

Have played 2 rounds this week to add to my handicap.

Due to a mixup with my current course I had to resubmit new cards which is why I'm seeing some changes on IG. Card 5 has gone onto IG today (Gross 80 Net 70). Also put one in Tuesday which was a Gross 85 Net 74. After the 85 went in my handicap was adjusted from 7.6 to 8.9. Told you I wouldn't be there for long
Expecting my Handicap to sit around 9 once cards calculated.

Even though I shot 80 today my driver was shocking. So glad my approach play was on form otherwise my score could have been in the 90s :D
