Golf Thread

Have played 2 rounds this week to add to my handicap.

Due to a mixup with my current course I had to resubmit new cards which is why I'm seeing some changes on IG. Card 5 has gone onto IG today (Gross 80 Net 70). Also put one in Tuesday which was a Gross 85 Net 74. After the 85 went in my handicap was adjusted from 7.6 to 8.9. Told you I wouldn't be there for long
Expecting my Handicap to sit around 9 once cards calculated.

Even though I shot 80 today my driver was shocking. So glad my approach play was on form otherwise my score could have been in the 90s :D
wish I could have a "shocking" driver round and shoot 80

For anyone wishing to buy a new driver there is currently £50 off all new Cobra LTDx Drivers at Scottsdale Golf.

I'm sure this discount is available elsewhere but @ £349 these drivers are simply so underrated.

great price and usually 5% off with your first order...

Good solid pricing - £350 is a good number - Considering TSR is £529

Anyone use a good app to record their swing automatically?

I was just looking up a device to do this and the LiveView Pro came from google, but its terrible quality and only 60FPS.
I would assume someone would have written an easy iphone/android app somewhere that can do all this automatically using your phones much better camera/horsepower.

Hi guys, I've found a club locally to me that offers Junior memberships for under 17s priced at £90 for the year. I looked into signing my son up who is getting into Golf and looked at the benefits of the membership and was surprised to see that if you become a member at this price, you pay zero green fees for the entire year. Unless I am mistaken, he can literally book a tea time with mates, turn up and play for free all year.
This seems a very good price or is this expected everywhere for youngsters these days? Just seemed very good value to me, given that adult memberships are over a grand for the year.

This is pretty normal.
Kids/teenagers get access at wicked prices.
Such a good sport for young ones to take up at that age, get some fitness, fresh air and a bit of ball hitting to soothe (or frustrate) the mind :p

How refreshing to hear. Great stuff. Can be a very expensive sport I guess unless you commit to a membership somewhere. If I want to play £20/£30 rounds a few times a month it soon becomes the same as an annual membership, which I guess would then encourage me to get my moneys worth and play more. It's a shame you then become limited to just one course though, unless there are ones where you can play at several.

There's www.playmore.golf
This allows you to have a membership, but play using points - you still get to play around 20+ times a year, but at a smaller membership cost through them. It's points based and the peak times are more costly, so you need to spend them wisely to get the best out of it.
Golfnow is an app you can use to get hold of cheaper deals, again... mostly good for non-peak times with some decent discounts.

Also, depending on the club you join, some are affiliated with other golf courses around the UK, where you can go and play those other courses for free, once per year. Have a look to see if that's in any of the benefits listed with any of the clubs you have in mind.

My local club also offers a 'County Card', I think it works in some places outside the county but within Wiltshire it's something like you shouldn't pay more than £35 for a round of golf, so the more expensive places that are usually £60+ are down at £35 and other seem to still offer a discount off their normal visitor costs, not exactly amazing but still opens up places I'd otherwise really think twice about paying so much for :p

Played again today, started absolutely terribly and then finally seemed to warm up and get into around the 11th/12th hole :( Did finish off with a solid par on the 18th which was nice. We almost got through without any real rain but it started lightly around the 15th and just got worse, was a bit damp by the end :p Thankfully when we turned up we were offered to leave early as we'd booked 10:12 and got out ~9:35 so saved 30-35 mins of rain...

This is my current swing:

Just got to where my speed is decent, averaging around 80-82MPH according to PRGR.
I want to get out to practice the new speed some more, while I try to incorporate some more shallowing at the top - but at the moment, I'm over the moon that I've reached that place where I feel I have the speed to reach most greens in reg now.

A couple of things for me to work on,
- Shallowing the club a bit more
- Get those hands to drop a bit so that I start coming from the inside, to ensure my path is more in-to-out
- Work on releasing the club better, as I've always tended to guide the club, rather turn the hands to release.
- Work on staying more balanced throughout

Couple instant issues I noticed. Which I'm sure you're aware of.
1) Back swing. You haven't got arm rotation or wrist rotation.

2 ) You're over extending your back swing. This will actually loose you power as you're fighting point one.

I think the idea being is that price it low/decent etc and they will continue to play as adults/members for a long time.

Golf clubs are historically retired/older individuals and need to bring in kids etc for the long term health of the club

@MarkA - don't take this the wrong way either!! Trying to help!

But I agree with @magicroundabout - The backswing is very long....shorten it up a bit would help. Watch Rahm/Finau for how "short" their backswing is.

Also - look at the difference in the "plane" from the back swing to down swing.

Look at the difference when your hands are on the way back when the club is at hip height and then on the way back down..... Your coming very much across the ball at impact....Outside to in.

Backswing/takeaway

Downswing

Like I say - not trying to be picky and I'm certainly no coach/expert on swings..... :D

Totally agree with both of you - but I'm a weirdo. :p
I love talking about making my swing better, so I don't take it badly at all.

I have hyperextended joints, which makes it very difficult for me to feel tension in my swing. This is basically why I've never had much power at all, until I actually reach the very very top of my backswing. This has been my mission over the last 12 months - I have to really over-extend to get the power I need, I just don't have it in my arms alone.

For the last 12 months, I've always had a short backswing - much like Jon Rahm, but I don't have anywhere near his power with his short backswing, and I've found I'm not hitting the ball far enough to be able to make much of a dent on my handicap, this is where the quest for more distance has come from and I feel I've finally got there. Now I'll work on the rest of the components, accuracy, in-to-out, repeatability.

On your comments @booyaka - with coming across, this is something I really need to work on, as I just can't get the feel down yet. I'm very much a feel person when it comes to the swing and getting to this power level is key for me getting consistent distance. My hand needs to be either on-plane, or slightly under it, to give me the ability to hit a nice draw, which is inevitably an in-to-out path, but to get there, I have to work on dropping my hands as I initiate the downswing, to come into the slot.

Rotation in my hands and wrists will come too... apparently, this is where a lot of speed can come from as well, but I've been on the quest for distance for so long, these other things have fallen to the side.
I'll post some updates as I work on things and I'd appreciate your comments as I go along.

My winter work is the same - I'm out to in, so I need to "pull down" to get on the inside more. I'm never going to become an " in to out " player without an entire swing rebuild and many many lessons which I'm not willing to do at 45 years old!

But if I can get from approx. 6 degrees over the top (currently) to about 3 degrees, that will certainly improve things for me - happy to play with my little cut/fade as that's been my shot for 20 years or more now. Pro I work with is happy with this years progress and some work over winter to improve hopefully.

Doubles Final tomorrow at 12.50pm - alternative shots - weather looks awful but it's the same for us all I guess..... Would love to win something this year as I've played fantastic this year - got to 2 finals and a semi but nothing to show for it. 12.1 to 9.1 handicap this year as well.

Lets hope the weather holds out for you. The rain has stopped here and it's meant to be dry for tomorrow in south wales, you might be lucky.
Good luck dude, i'm sure you'll smash it.
