Another thing to consider with bunkers is how hard/soft they are.
If they're nice and fluffy then yes. open the face and use the bounce of the club. Aim around an inch before the ball and don't decelerate through impact. Trust the loft.

If the sand is compacted and firm then I always treat the bunker like the fairway. If close to the green I use a simple wedge swing or if I'm further back then a full swing.

Horrendous 9 today, just awful. Topping everything and never felt comfortable over the ball. Amazing how you can make everything sing at the range but as soon as the lie changes and each shot counts, you might as well hve never picked up a club. Playing again tomorrow so here's hoping I can clear my head a little.

Another Friday, another round of golf :)

Playing at the harder of the two courses at Woodlands today, previous best was a 124 and today I scored 118 :D Oddly there weren't too many standout shots/holes but actually some level of consistency. In the first 9 I started with an 8 (had an absolutely terrible first hole, wasn't expecting much after that) and the next 8 was the 9th hole, I usually rack up way too many 8's (we cap to that). Got a few more on the back 9 unfortunately but still, best score on that course and 3rd best score overall, good times :)

Tempted to go to the range tomorrow though, my shots started going a bit right a couple of weeks ago and it just seems to be getting worse, especially with the driver, was pretty much managing that throughout the course today.

Playing the same course on Sunday so gonna be heading into it with a bit of confidence at least :p

Just back from a nice round in the sunshine in Stratford Upon Avon.

Compared to Tuesday my game was good. Finished on 85 - Part 72. Had my Handicap as 9 for today. Front 41 Back 44.

I started with a double bogey on the 1st and also shot an 8 on a Par 5 16th.

Happy with my game today as the amount of leaves on the edge of the fairways from the trees made finding a ball extremely hard and at times almost impossible.

Just got back from the Sunday game, same course as Friday but a somewhat different result...

Friday seemed like I was just doing 'ok' but 'ok' everywhere to get 118, today I got 124 but in a very different way... First 9 was utterly awful, probably the worst I've ever played, 6x 8's (max we do in the group) a 7 and a 6 for 69, at that point and the start of the back 9 I was preparing for a new high score

But overall the back 9 was way better, scored 55 which is a good score for 9 for me and better than either half of the Friday game to give me that 124 which is 'ok' for the course.

Last hole especially I'm happy with, It's quite a long par 5 especially as the safe route is out around the left as there's two lakes in the straight line route, but basically every shot went well :D Drive was straight and decent length, two 6 irons were clean hits, picked a 7 for my next and hit it well but a 6 would've been better as I didn't quite make the green, used a 7 iron 'bump and run' onto the green and it was really close to going in, ended up less than a foot away for an easy knock in with the putter. Still a bogey but by far the best I've ever played that hole :)

This game though...

Had my most productive range session today since my swing changes. A step forward from the utter dispondancy of the last few. Drills I've been given were going well and in the main striking the ball okay even if the distance isn't yet there.

Put the new swing on the driver and have moved away from the previous big fade to a much smaller one like my irons which is nice. Not much carry but a lot more run out than previously. Hope springs eternal :p

No golf for me this weekend - DIY all weekend....

Will try and get to the range this week at some point - done no "work" in about 6 weeks on swing.

So my mate is a bit golf mad and convinced me to do 9 holes after my lesson today, I'll admit it didn't take much convincing

Pro-tip: Directly after a swing lesson is not a good time to actually play golf :p

Lesson went ok though, at least for the first 2/3's I was really hitting some lovely shots but as then the pro gets us to focus on certain elements and my ability to actually hit the ball suffers... So took a couple of holes on the course to get back into things but after that it was ok.

Hit a drive on the last hole that left me right next to a ditch/stream, unfortunately on the 'wrong side', to swing normally I'd need to be hovering over the ditch, which I haven't quite mastered yet so that was interesting...

How did you play it? Did you go for the reverse chip shot or take relief?

Went for the reverse chip, it's harder than it looks

First attempt I swung a bit too hard missed the ball and the club came out my hand, thankfully to my left and not in the ditch :p Second one missed again and almost lost grip on the club and then finally got some contact and it was ok, ball was safe but didn't exactly go far, not great when you're about 120 yards into a ~450 yard par 5...

I may have mentioned before but with not having a full 14 clubs I've been half-tempted to get a cheap left handed club to go in the bag for that really odd occasion when it'd be useful :p

Went for another 9 again today, my mate is a bad influence on me... Did confirm though I can basically do it in 2-hours from leaving my house to getting home, as long as I don't do any warmup on the range, who needs warmup :cry:

18 holes in 2.5 hours - got to love midweek golf.

Played fairly solid - 3 bridies - missed another 3 putts from inside 8ft for birdies as well. Good to just get out and swing the club today.

Got another lesson booked in for Saturday after a truly horrific weekend of Golf. Not feeling comfortable over any shot at the moment and my swing is all over the place. Probably not helped that I've been pretty ill but still, I expect to fall back on something even if my head isn't in the right place. Just forgetting all my cues and getting faced down by every shot...

my new clubs arrived today after a long 2 month wait. I am now the proud owner of a fitted set of Mizuno JPX 921 hot metal irons 6-GW, JPX Fli Hi 5 hybrid, Cleveland RBX zipcore satin 56 wedge, callaway Rogue ST Max D driver and 3W. Going to take them out for round tomorrow.
i would advise at least having a range session to ensure you know your new yardages

Love shiny new toys.

But it appears you have a lot of space for more clubs (I'm counting 11 incl putter). What are you looking to fill the gaps with?

I echo @MikeTimbers comment about a range session first. Get your yardages and know your gapping

it's actually 12 inc putter as I also have the Odyssey X-ACT chipper for those tight lies round the greens. Based on where my game is currently I am not really missing anything. As I get my handicap down I would probably look at adding a 60° wedge. I could probably get a 5W now as that would cover the gap between 3W (16°) and 5H (22°), but if I am being honest I probably don't need it right now. Yes there are probably times when I am between clubs at that end of the bag, but then I just make a choice of 90% swing 3W or 110% swing 5H.

I'd definitely recommend another wedge, 52° or 58/60° and maybe a 3 hybrid 19° to fill your gapping between 3W 16°, 5H 22°.

But without a good range session to get yardages you won't really know.

Just looking at the 921 they're quite strong lofted so possible it's the short end to look at depending on your distances.
