My personal journey into golf.
I've only been playing since late 2007/early 2008 after I ruptured my ACL in 2006 playing football.
First set was roughly £40 off eBay. Rubbish grips, rubbish clubs but they got me started. Hippo I think they were.
I then brought off the shelf some Callaway Diablo Edge Irons and some RBZ Driver and woods. Used these for a couple years before stopping golf when my daughter was born in 2010 and then picked it back up in 2012.
When I did start back up I found my Callaways to be awful so got fitted for some Ping G20s. I was in-between a 22 and 28 handicap when I got fitted and noticed the difference instantly. I was only playing twice a month though so not playing regularly.
As I got better I found the chunkiness of the G20 was really off putting so in 2016 I opted for some i25's and also some Glide wedges. I'd joined my first club Bromsgrove, as they offered student membership. So for £45pm I could have the benefit of a 7 day member. My official handicap there was 22.3. Never entered comps or tried to reduce it.
Driver wise I chopped and changed loads. Never getting fitted. This I believe hindered myself.
I stuck with the Ping i25s for 6 years until I saw the Titleist T100s and instantly loved the look but never thought I was good enough for them as last year I was playing off 15.
After being fitted I put 15 yards on all my clubs. 7 iron averaging between 170/175 yards. Reliability was off the scale and confidence has been high this year when using them.
Personally I feel I've worked on my swing over the last 12 months and now having new fitted clubs has really helped my drop my handicap index down to 8.4.
Also joining another new club Wharton Park, where I play at least once per week and using the range in-between is helping.
This made me get fitted for my wedges, hybrids and driver. If I could have as much confidence in my short game and woods like I have in my irons my handicap would become consistent. After 3 of my best rounds ever (82, 80 & 78) it's paying off. Shame we're hitting the winter now though
.
Personally
@SKILL I would work on your swing through the winter as winter golf is horrible. Yes play some rounds but don't get to hung up on score. Just concentrate on swing and ball striking.
Then around Feb/March time get yourself fitted. But find a set you like the look of. Having confidence in your club at address is so important. If you can afford it get the whole bag done but that is expensive I know.
I also would come down for a round with you at some point. My older sister lives in Highworth and I'm a Swindon fan for my sins so know the area.
