Golf Thread

Titleist were doing a fitting day at Ultimate Golf (Walsall) which is where I got my T100s Irons fitted. Didn't buy from them as they never got back to me about prices etc so ordered through Scottsdale Golf.

I went to Three Hammers American Golf for my driver/Hybrids fitting. They were brilliant. Not your typical American Golf.

Where do you play as I see you must be local. I'm a member at Wharton Park, Bewdley.

Ahh lovely! My Grandad was a member there for quite a while I believe, he loved it!

I play mostly at Dartmouth course in West Bromwich. It's my closest course and I don't drive, but it's nice enough. I play Dudley whenever I get the chance and occasionally Lickey Hills as well. Dudley is my favorite to play, some wonderful holes there.

Out of curiosity how long have you been playing before getting fitted? I've only just started and it's something that intrigues me, I personally feel as a complete n00b doing weekly group lessons that I'm improving but also that the mechanics of my swing are actually changing quite dramatically, or were at the start and still changing but stabilising somewhat I guess.

Not that I'm looking at large scale new clubs anytime soon :p

I did recently buy a cheapo 3 wood and 4 iron, basically just wanted to try those type of clubs, tested them at the range yesterday and I see why people don't particularly like the longer irons and that's only a 4... :D
My personal journey into golf.

I've only been playing since late 2007/early 2008 after I ruptured my ACL in 2006 playing football.

First set was roughly £40 off eBay. Rubbish grips, rubbish clubs but they got me started. Hippo I think they were.
I then brought off the shelf some Callaway Diablo Edge Irons and some RBZ Driver and woods. Used these for a couple years before stopping golf when my daughter was born in 2010 and then picked it back up in 2012.

When I did start back up I found my Callaways to be awful so got fitted for some Ping G20s. I was in-between a 22 and 28 handicap when I got fitted and noticed the difference instantly. I was only playing twice a month though so not playing regularly.

As I got better I found the chunkiness of the G20 was really off putting so in 2016 I opted for some i25's and also some Glide wedges. I'd joined my first club Bromsgrove, as they offered student membership. So for £45pm I could have the benefit of a 7 day member. My official handicap there was 22.3. Never entered comps or tried to reduce it.
Driver wise I chopped and changed loads. Never getting fitted. This I believe hindered myself.

I stuck with the Ping i25s for 6 years until I saw the Titleist T100s and instantly loved the look but never thought I was good enough for them as last year I was playing off 15.
After being fitted I put 15 yards on all my clubs. 7 iron averaging between 170/175 yards. Reliability was off the scale and confidence has been high this year when using them.

Personally I feel I've worked on my swing over the last 12 months and now having new fitted clubs has really helped my drop my handicap index down to 8.4.
Also joining another new club Wharton Park, where I play at least once per week and using the range in-between is helping.

This made me get fitted for my wedges, hybrids and driver. If I could have as much confidence in my short game and woods like I have in my irons my handicap would become consistent. After 3 of my best rounds ever (82, 80 & 78) it's paying off. Shame we're hitting the winter now though .

Personally @SKILL I would work on your swing through the winter as winter golf is horrible. Yes play some rounds but don't get to hung up on score. Just concentrate on swing and ball striking.

Then around Feb/March time get yourself fitted. But find a set you like the look of. Having confidence in your club at address is so important. If you can afford it get the whole bag done but that is expensive I know.

I also would come down for a round with you at some point. My older sister lives in Highworth and I'm a Swindon fan for my sins so know the area.

I live just outside Dudley. I work at RHH.
Lickey Hills I used loads before I was a member at Bromsgrove. Great little course.

Dudley is a little too hilly for my liking. Not played Dartmouth in West Brom but it's only 15mins from myself. I play Perton a few times just to mix it up a bit.

Aha I work at SWBH City side, greetings from across the murky pond of the NHS :P

Dartmouth is nice. It's an 18 hole course but technically speaking not really. I'm sure there's a technical term for it but the back 9 is basically the front 9 with a few different spots to tee from. Still a nice course though and it never really gets too busy.

I've not played Perton yet but it's on my list!

That's quite good to read and glad it's working for you :)

Yeah, that's the plan, I'd like to keep playing 2-3 rounds a week (2 18-holes and 1+ 9hole at the local club), and keep up the group lessons, maybe have some 1-on-1 lessons too. I try not to get hung up on score but I always want to improve and don't see that changing :p

I hear the looks/club at address stuff a lot but I kinda don't get it tbh :p I've not looked down at the club and thought that I was gonna miss because of the look if that makes sense, and I never really blame the club for a poor shot as I know all my clubs can do decently if I connect nicely, but I dunno, still so limited in what I've tried...

Sounds good, if you're in the area and fancy a game ping me a message :)

My local course is the same, 9 holes but some different tee locations, some seem quite close/similar but some clearly change the hole a decent amount, although I've not actuall done a full 18 holes yet.

I actually find I quite like just 9 holes, it's quicker so less of a 'commitment' I guess? Like I can do 9 holes there in about 2 hours if I wanted to from leaving my house to getting home 18 there would be another ~1.5 hours or so at least, and the place I usually play in Bristol a full 18 holes is a good 4 hours + the travelling time and it easily stretches to 6+ hours which is a chunk of time :p

Looks like pxg are selling last year's budget driver from their line up at a super rock bottom price :)

I'm actually kind of tempted as the value of the shaft itself won't be far off that price

Fairway is £109 as well

Oh wow that's cheap, from what I've seen it's pretty much up there with the best drivers and for £129

Played at my local course today, previously just done 9 holes but today I was convinced by a mate to do the full 18. Walking. Carrying the clubs. I ache a lot!

Started well, went downhill from there :p Think part of the reason for going downhill was I was getting tired and aching by like the 11th/12th hole really, that's what I'll blame some of those terrible shots on...

Playing again tomorrow morning, thankfully with a buggy

Picked up my putter from the Club Shop at Wharton Park this morning with my new grip attached. SuperStroke Pistol GT 2.0. Feels so much better.

Went to the range on the way home too. Couldn't hit a thing. Everything felt off so after 50 of my 100 balls I called it a day as I was getting annoyed

Food, water, etc - Always carry some bars/fluids as it's 3/4hours at times so you need to make sure your eating and drinking enough

Pricing up a driver with my same shaft Tensei AV Raw White 65 X-Stiff + Golf Pride +4 Grip = £149 delivered. That's an absolute steal.

Compared too:
Stealth+ = £655
Titlist TSR3 = £535
Cobra LTDx-LS = £349

I think that was possibly part of it, I generally don't eat till the afternoon/evening but I think for that where I was playing from roughly noon to 3 some food, preferably sugary would've been good :p I took/drank 800ml of water and was hydrated before so I think that's ok really...

The biggest issue is likely that I'm not that fit, which is part of why I took up golf in the first place, so yeah, that'll do it  Plan is to keep playing the 9 holes walking at least once a week, and probably occasionally 18 holes walking (but not gonna plan it the day before another 18 hole round next time :p), to build up that fitness, and maybe even get better at golf, maybe...

Totally agree. I always buy snacks for a game. I usually have a small meal before, with some fluids. Then eat and drink every 3-4 holes. It's a sport don't forget, you need to be feeling your best every time you strike the ball, or it can affect your outcomes.
If I've forgotten to eat and it's late in the round, I usually start making mistakes and I don't catch on until the game is finished by then, which is obviously too late.

Played today, shot another 89 with 2 birdies on the front nine. 41 front, 48 back with some school boy errors on the back too. Wish I could just replay the entire back nine! Although did find out that my 3wood is now hot and is almost as long as my driver at the moment! Will have to take that to my local course and hit a few off the tee with it to see how it goes. My mate who has never broken 90, shot 85 today... so it was a happy game of golf, very enjoyable.

Bloody hell that's an excellent price. Very tempted as I could do with something half decent. Don't understand their pricing structure at all but everyone seems to think they hit well at any price.

Aye, I usually play at around 3-4 in the afternoon which is in between meals for me and I find if I don't have something before I tee off I get very sluggish by the 8th/9th. Always take a few pieces of fruit and an isotonic with me.

Had my first lesson in years on Tuesday. Went reasonably well and was told pretty much what I expected to hear, that I don't use my hips enough but my form in general is half decent and my short game doesn't need much tweaking, though I need to learn to read greens betters. Going to commit to a ground up rebuild which takes as long as it takes.

Played the front 9 at Dartmouth yesterday and shot 43 implementing my new stance at the tee box. Was a mix of shanks and flushes which I suppose is to be expected when you've never really utilized your hips... Going to go down again tonight as I finish early today. Got to try and unlearn those bad habits.

Another day another round of golf :D

Playing the 'harder' course at Woodlands and got 124 overall, think that matches my best ever and generally happy really. Weather was ok but not great, stayed dry except for a few drops of rain but the wind was pretty strong and was just getting stronger the further through the round we got. The 18th there is a long par 5 with some lakes and ended up right into the wind, made for a slog :p

Hit my Driver pretty well though, a while ago I had like a 'special driver stance' that was a little odd but kinda worked I've been trying to get it closer to my iron swing (obviously with the ball position by the front heel) and it was going well, even to the extent a couple of holes I really put some more effort in and still got nice contact, previously when trying to hit it harder generally got me topping it or even just missing so nice to be able to get those longer shots.

Back to it on Sunday but the 'easier' course, hit 115 last time, kinda hoping for a new PB but also trying not to think too much about it

Bizarre start to todays round.

1st tee shot is always into the sun this time of year - only 2 of us playing - felt like I hit it fine but neither of us saw it and my provisional was into the rough and a hack out sideways on the 1st is never ideal.

Triple on the 1st - great bounce back birdie on the 2nd, then a shank on the 3rd tee shot and walk off with a quad bogie....

Bizarre 8/4/7/4 start - Kept the head well, played solid on the way home, short game was solid today. Very strange round for a Net 72 after being 7 over through 3!

Will probably get cut as the 8 will come down the 7 and the 7 will come down to a 5 for handicap purposes....

One to forget today so I'll save you the scorecard. Suffice to say I was 52 for eight holes and started 7/7/7!

Knew it was going to be bad when I was just getting of town and realized I'd left my phone at home. Didn't want to turn around as I like to have a warm up on the range and get some of those bad shots out of the system :p. Only the traffic was absolutely horrendous, including a 20 minute jam right on the approach to the golf course. This meant no warm up so when the opening tee shot barely made it past the tee boxes.....

The only redeeming feature of the round was some of my putting. I don't think I found the middle of my irons once and the one occasion I got driver out I hit a big slice onto the adjoining fairway. Golf, I must be crazy!
