Epic mate. They look lovely.

Advice now is to find a local TopTracer/Trackman range and hit 10/15 balls with each club to get your yardages and gapping. That way when on the course you know which club to pull depending on conditions etc

Thanks mate, love them.

Yeah good shout. My local course I’m a member of doesn’t have an advanced range with trackman..

But one around a 15-20 minute drive away does, so will get into my yardages once I get get used to hitting them.

If I can hit them!

Got back from the Friday round, played a new course called Tall Pines right next to Bristol Airport, nice course, few holes near where planes are taking off but honestly the noise wasn't too bad and didn't get an overwhelming smell of jet fuel :p Overall good though, still playing some winter matts/greens so probably playing a bit shorter than normal really.

Scored my best ever round by a decent margin, 101 so 5 shots off my best, but different course and like I said probably a bit short, still happy with it though.

Driver worked pretty well, again like the range/expected it won't fix a terrible swing but just so much more consistent and playable when a 'bad slice' is like 20-ish yards right and not 50+ :p Nice to get a round in and like the new putter when I pull the driver out the bag now I have confidence I can hit a good shot with it so that's great, worth every penny :D

yeah mate, confidence is king in golf, really is!

My course is right next to Farnborough Airport, on the "airport holes" if you hit a slice your looking at hitting either a private plane or if the airshow is on, an American Military helicopter.

All good fun and banter until the wind is off the left and your on the tee next!

I know this is subjective, but I’m looking for a good ball (that won’t break the bank) to be my "go to" ball, as it’s important to be consistent with balls as well as your clubs..or so I read..

what do you guys recommend? I’m currently edging towards the Srixon AD333.

So many different balls around it's tough to say. I suppose the biggest question is what can you afford to loose working on average balls lost per round?

The AD333 is a great ball as is the Titleist Tour Soft.

But you can also get Mint ProV1 from here for under £30

right now mate, I purchased The Slazenger V300 soft (dont think they will be that soft) to buy and "lose", so I’m looking at a decent ball to play when my consistency is better.

what ball do you play magic?

I don't actually mind the V300, the V100 is utter garbage but the V300 is playable imo. Personally though I prefer/use the Srixon Soft Feel, specifically the 'matt brite orange' ones, they've got this kinda matt soft feeling outer rather than the usual shiny one which psychologically feels good, and they're £35 for two dozen at Sports Direct so not too expensive.

I also (still!) spend a fair amount of time playing random ones I've found, actually quite often the likes of Titleist ProV1/X's and other premium balls, depends how I feel/what hole I'm on.

I forgot to ask yesterday but how many people play with a rangefinder? Especially those that also have a GPS device?

Playing yesterday with the temporary greens it was kinda surprising how hard it seemed not knowing the distance, and it's not like I can hit a consistant distance anyway :p I've got the Garmin Epix so a decent GPS option but even without the temporary greens I've found myself kinda wanting a rangefinder to get a better distance to a tree or whatever...

Saying that they're also like £70+ which seems a lot for something I might use once or twice a round and don't 'need'.

But what you need to realise is that when it comes to golf, 'need' and 'want' are the same thing :D

Have a look on eBay and Facebook marketplace. My mate got one for about £50 that was practically brand new and retails around £150.

If I was to get a range finder I'd go all out and get one with elevation profile too (although IIRC that function can't be used in competitions).

My watch gives a supposed 'plays like', which I think is mostly/all elevation, I keep switching it on and off and not really sure I like it/it makes a difference to me right now... And yeah, that and a few other things need to be disabled in comps, I think a bunch of the range finders have a light or some external sign that it's disabled to make sure as well.

Talking of golf balls myself and my friend swapped a box of ProV1 and ProV1x.

He has always played ProV1x and I've always been intrigued with gaining a higher ball flight and to see if there was more spin control as stated on their adverts.

I have to say the differences for me really are night and day. The extra firmness off the club is really noticeable. Ball flight is higher and spin on lower irons is noticeable but I felt distance was some 10 to 15 yards behind on full driver and long iron shots so for me the ball died in the air with the low spin compared to the ProV1. For me I prefer the softer feel of the ProV1 in comparison.

My friend gained some 20 yards on full driver shots and spin control around the green was so much better for him.
Really is amazing how a ball can offer such a different flight and spin/stop charictoristics.

It might be worth asking Ayrshire Golf Balls if they'll send you a mixed box of balls. 3 x ProV1, 3 x AD333, 3 x Chrome Soft, 3 x Bridgestone Tour BXS. That way you can try all of them and decide.

wow, didnt think that golf balls, between them would make such a colossal difference!

Good shout, might try and get a mix up and try a few different brands / models.

Got a range finder from Amazon for about £80 - AOFAR GX-2S Golf Range Finder

Does the job fine - tested against a mates £400 bushnell one and it was about 2 yards difference up to 150 and about 2-4 yards up to 250 yards. More than accurate enough for me. That one has 10% off today as well.

Like you - use for temp greens etc

Anyone looking for balls - There a few cracking facebook groups that I use.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/870495540351494 (this one is unreal)

I'm a pro v / AVX guy for summer time but generally maybe only loose 1 ball a round/2 at most. I bought from the second link last year and his quality is unreal. Can barely tell the difference between new and his mint condition balls.

Winter AD333 is a super solid ball to use that doesn't cost the earth. Highly recommend. Guy who runs the second group usually does £28 for 30 delivered AD333.... great value at less than £1 a ball and excellent condition.
