Golf Thread

Very average game this morning. Left at least 4 putts within 1 inch of going in, also missed a couple of putts inside 3ft, driving went well, though the soft ground meant that my low bounce wedges were digging in a lot a cutting the distance, time to switch to wedges with more bounce for soft winter fairways i think. Didn't score too basly though, quite suprised when i totted up an 86 on a Par 71 course, if only i had sunk those putts, possibly been under 80 for the first time in a good few months.

Anyone else out today?

I've just realised, that after many years of playing golf on and off, I use an unconventional grip.

Does anyone else use an unconventional grip? I'll try to get some pics up in a bit to show you. I find that trying to use the Vardon or interlocking just don't feel right to me. When I'm in 'good' mode, I can hit pretty well and consistently, and I'll be damned if it's causing me trouble.

A bad angle, but you get the idea:

Anything else just feels really weird to me.

My wife is just taking up golf (needs lessons!), and finds my above method better than the baseball, interlocking or Vardon too.

My one piece of advice is to see the pro about grip, and work with what he gives you. It might be a bit odd at first, but the swing is a chain of reactions, so having a odd grip may produce problems elsewhere.

Believe me, you might think the pro is destroying your swing, but work at it and it will pay dividends :)

Anyone play in the rain and wind yeterday... I was one of the stupid few out on the course... Sometimes the rain and wind were so hard i couldn't see the next hole. Once the rain got through my wets and water was running down my chest and my pants were soaking went it was game over. Never been so glad to see the 18th tee.!

Wait all week to play one round of golf then it rains :( typical!

I am still reeling in upset and sadness :(

I awoke nice and early on Saturday morning ready for a 7:30 tee off........as i opened the front door...........Heavens opened!!! I was mortified due to this being my only opportunity to play all weekend, worked out times for Sunday and planned to squeeze in a tight 18.
So Saturday night i didnt drink too much at a Halloween party (outside) weather was mild and was in good spirits to get up early and squeeze 18 in before me and the wife had to go out......................WOKE UP TO THE WORST RAIN AND WIND EVER!!!!!!!

Not only was my saturday destroyed but my easy night at a party was wasted due to harendous weather in the morning!

RANT OVER, CARRY ON.....:p

I was on the range today trying out hybrids off the deck. When I catch it right, they fly lovely. Just not consistant enough to use them during a game.
What is the loft for a typical 3 hybrid and a 4 hybrid ?

Also, I see many conflicting info about the swing for them, some say like an iron and swing downwards, some say like a wood and sweep them ???
Currently I am sweeping them so the loft of the club lifts it.

Lofts vary by manufacturer, but you would expect to see a 3 hybrid around the 19/20 degree and a 4 hybrid around the 22/23. For my swing, it all depends on the lie, if it's off the fairway i have the ball in my stance where i would usually hit my mid-irons from and then make a smooth swing through the ball, out of the rough i would probably go after the ball a bit more aggresively. They are great clubs when you do get used to them and are very easy to use. My 4h goes around the same distance as my 3 iron, though the flight of the hybrid is considerably higher then the irons, so gives differen't options to consider (windy take the 3 iron, want to land it and stop quickly take the hybrid etc).

Yep, kefkef has said it all pretty much, lofts vary from brand to brand so don't worry too much; as long as your happy with knowing how far you hit the ball/want to and are capable of hitting it don't worry.

I'd probably have hybrid clubs but my ball flight is a touch on the high side as it is already, brilliant when there is only a small/non-existent wind, but when the wind is fairly strong into face or behind I struggle to control the distance. (Crosswinds are ok because i just adjust aim accordingly :D)

The main pro's for hybrids are out of the rough though, they fly through the grass unlike a 4 or 3 iron.

Question for all you guys that play through winter:

I want to get some waterproofs and wanted to know whether it was better to get a pac-lite type jacket that I can put over what I am wearing or get a "full" jacket that is larger and is to be worn as a jacket.

Same for trousers, should I get ones that I wear over my trousers or "waterproof trousers" that are trousers which are also waterproof?

I have a few different options...

1 - windproof pull on jumpers, great for cold windy days and fine drizzle

2 - short sleeve pull on waterproof top, great for warmer days when the rain comes on, or if you don't like the restriction of long sleeve

3 - proper jacket and trousers (trousers for wearing over normal trousers), which is ideal for when it's really chucking it down, and to get on quickly over normal gear if the heavy stuff catches you out

It will really come down to your own personal preference. I prefer to wear the windproof tops unless it's raining heavily, then the jacket and trousers comes out.

If you are getting jacket and trousers, be very careful to get ones that have a breathable lining. Otherwise you end up soaked underneath the waterproofs from build up of sweat...yuck

I bought a Ping set and it was about £90. It's great, very light and keeps me bone dry. I had previously bought a cheaper set and soon found out why it was cheap, no breathability :(

Yeh, I am looking at Gore-tex stuff at the moment, thinking of getting some Galvin Greens as an investment, but don't know whether to pay so much.

Galvins are very highly thought of, but at the end of the day, GorTex is just a fabric technology, so pretty much any gortex branded waterproofs should do the job. Personally i would go for the lite versions, pac-lite etc as you will find that they spend more time in your bag than actually on your back, and you don't want to be humping heavy gear around on your back/trolley all winter. I've got a Sunice Hurricane top/trousers, very nice and probably half the price of Galvins. If you get into a few of the local pro-shops i reckon you should find one of last years 'models' of the premium brands for probably half price or better at the moment as they gear up for the winter and sell off old stock.

The gear i use for winter golf is my usual trousers/top etc, but i add a canterbury cold weather compression top under the polo shirt, then if it's really cold i'll stick a jumper on, then when it gets wet, throw my waterproof on over that.

Oh snap! I just bought 3 canterbury tops for £10 each and wear them when golfing. Got them a bit too small though which is slightly annoying.
I think I am going to go with a pac-lite so I can just slip it on when wet, as I can't see myself wearing a big coat all the time. And then invest in a few wind-proof tops.

Trousers I am not sure about, do you put them on over your normal ones on the course? So you have to take your shoes off in the wet and put them on?

Nope! If they are anyway decent at all, you will be able to easily put them on over your shoes.

Just make sure when buying they are thin enough material, and wide enough opening that you can ravel (*spelling) them up and pull over your shoes without dragging your shoes down the length of the insides ;)

Played the next day in the wind on a Links course :D Luckily I was hitting the ball nice and crisp and could control the tragectory enough to bash it round in 90 (par 72) which I was pleased with playing off 18 on a course I had never played before.

Well, another of those 'Tale of two nines' yesterday. Couldn't hit a barn door with a banjo on the way out, first tee shot was the most vicious slice i think i have ever hit. Out in 49 (14 over) for 12 points. Gave myself a good talking to on the 10th tee and managed to paly some very nice golf, 1 birdie (highlight of the round, 433yd par 4, 2 shots onto green, 30ft big left > right break, straight in the centre of the hole!) and 4 pars, the rest pretty close except for the 7 on a par 5 (couldn't find the ball after 2nd shot into light rough, so had to go back and play another), came back in 39 (4 over) for 23 points. Overall 35 points and enough to take the £15 pot for the day.

Went to go get custom fit for some new irons yesterday by my mate in American Golf. Tried out about 20 different irons on a vectre launch monitor (hitting balls into a net) and narrowed it down to about 5. Hit them all again and looked at the numbers that were coming up on the laptop, then got it down to the two that were looking like they were the best for me feel and shot wise.

Titleist ZB's and the Taylormade MB's. Finally decided on the MB's after another 10 or so balls with each, then we figured out what custom fitting I needed, needed 1/4" longer shafts, 3 layers of grip tape, clubs bent 1 flat and tournament lofting put on them. He went over to his boss for a price check only to come back with "they were discontinuing that line and would not be able to custom fit anything for me". I thought damn, best go for the ZB's then! My mate comes back 5 minutes later with the exact same story story, ZB's are being discontinued and there is nothing Titleist will do.. I was raging!

At least Titleist are replacing the ZB's on Dec the 1st, unlike Taylormade who are just leaving the MB range to the history books. Going back in a few weeks to try again :(
