Golf Thread

My first stinker in a while yesterday. Knew it was coming but still a little disheartening.

Just couldn't hit anything. Never felt good over a shot outside of the greens and felt completely knackered by the time I got to the 13th. It usually takes me 2 or 3 holes to really get going but my tempo and technique stayed pretty lousy the whole way round and just decided to leave in the end. Only the second time I've not holed out. Wasn't necessarily frustrated as I'd prepared myself for a drop in progression, just a bit baffling. That's Golf I suppose. Left having shot 76 by the end of the 13th...

Interesting thing. They'd closed the practice nets because a few members had apparently been hitting wedges into them and having the ball ricochet off the cross section of the frame. 2 nasty head injuries in a month, apparently one guy nearly lost an eye...
My question is, who the hell practices their wedge game in the nets?? It'd be somewhat understandable if the club didn't have 3 really well maintained short game practice areas...

I went round with my son on Sunday and he battered me. I shot around 107. I made a note of how many times I took 3 or more putts on the greens and it was 15 out of 18 holes. The greens were just so hard. I think I over read them and always assume more break than it does. I think I would have done better to just aim straight at the hole every shot.
I embarrassed myself on hole 4. I drove the green on a short par 4 and had an Eagle putt. I 5 putted for a 6. This wasn't annoyed, rash putting. I was genuinely trying! First putt I underhit by about 50%. Second one I overhit by about 150%. Then back down the hill I again overhit and it just kept going and going. Then I took another 2 putts to finally drop it in. I guess you just take the positive of a good Tee shot and move on. :(
I find with driver off the tee, it's such fine margins between fairway vs lost ball. Literally just slightly misaligned face and boom, into rough and lost ball. Highlights were I hit probably 4 nice drives out of the whole round. Couple of decent chips. Putting was the worst I've ever putted.

Any tips on putting? I find if I go to a putting practice green, I'm fine. Go out to a course where it counts, on greens you just don't know and it's like 100 times harder.

What are the issues?
  • Pace of greens/speed of putt?
  • misreading the greens?
  • Where to aim?
Putting is a very individual part of the game.... I putt "cack handed" for instance... (left hand below right) - have done for years, but it's not something anyone would teach I suspect (play normal handed for a right handed with the rest of my game)

Practice is all I can say. If you have a putting green at your club - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IukApU3-Uys

As Arnie would say, ALL. :)
having a routine is important. and don't rush any putt.
having a good ten minutes on the practice green before playing. practice making putts not missing them so lots of short ones not just long ones. if all you do is practice 20ft putts all you do is practice missing. OTOH, it's important to also get the feel for longer ones too. practice uphill and downhill putts too. make an effort to get the pace of the greens.
don't just walk up, take a quick look and putt. as soon as you can see your ball on the green look at the damn green. take some time, preferably when someone else is also looking, to decide if your putt is up or down, left or right. look from flag to ball as well as ball to flag.

Bit of a setback today guys, in my "outdoor sim"..

Cant believe it but trying a few things lead me to shanking my 7 iron! YES my 7 iron into my right side fence, TWICE! to then bounce over to the other side onto my neighbors fence, and make a hella noise, and I cant have that, them out in there garden over summer to hear that happening (as rare as it is)..and yeah, I asked their permission to put my net up before I started investing in anything..

So tomorrow I will be ordering some more "archery" netting to put along the right hand side, to "absorb" and "kill" the bad balls before a pinball machine starts pinging around the garden!

draw a line in permanent marker on your ball and develop a routine, walk to the green mark it have a look at the hole from different perspectives, pick a line/point and put your drawn line to that target.

As for putting stroke, i also putt cack handed it stops me being "handsy". The key to being a good putter is making the ball roll end over end which you will see clearly if you draw a good line on the ball. Once you master that its either pace or line and not your stroke.

Man since that lesson I’m really struggling played about 3 rounds and I’m shanking a fair few and just don’t feel like I know where the club face is. It’s weird because it seems mental I went to the range yesterday and hit it well and played 6 holes today decent then i just lost it completely again and shanked a few and just felt zero compression.

21 hole epic against +1 handicap lad tonight... I won in the end... Was 2 down after 10... Then won 11/13/14 with my shots... We halved 15 in 4's... (getting 8 shots overall)

I won 16 with 4 net 3 to be dormie 2.... He then won 17 and hit driver/3 iron to back of 18th, 2 putt birdie...560 yards...for win

Am amazing par 5 from me at 19th after being in the trees with tee shot and chipping sideways... I had a putt on 20th to win but missed... Then a couple of 3's on 21st was good enough for me with a shot for net 2... Great game, great young lad....

These young lads hit it so far it's insane, he carries 2 drivers!! a shorter one for more "controlled" tee shots and then a Stealth 2 X Stiff Accra shaft that goes miles... Clocked his first tee shot at 321 yards...

If you can keep 300yard+ in play off the tee the advantage would be sickening.

First hole is 456 yard, dog leg, uphill par 5 (plays 490 off medals) - He hit driver, pw to front edge both times... :D

18th is 520 yard par 5 - Usually a layup for me to the bunkers at the top of the hill (around 200/210) - as it drops down into a massive gully and back up the other side. (would need a 270/280 carry between some trees etc to make it) - It's a 3 shot hole every time for me and I'm not a short hitter.

He just blasts driver over bunkers/over gully/onto the flat of the fairway at around 310 yards. Then 3 iron to back of green. I've played that hole 100's of times (probably 500 times) - never been closer than 50/60 yards away in two.

God that's sickening. I keep thinking I'm still young enough at 31 to generate that sort of power with just a few tweaks, but that dreams getting further and further away...

I used to do strength and resistance training from late teens to mid twenties and although it's been a few years now I thought a bit of that residual strength would carry over to my swing... shows how specific the movement is really that I feel very little of it has helped (so far at least).

Was messing around with my mates "speed sticks" this morning after the gym.... I got the lightest one up to 119mph....My driver swing normally is around 108mph. Not sure I'd like to go at it another 10mph more - no idea where it could end up!!

I'm not boasting or anything, but I've had the green stick (the lightest one) at 120MPH
"ner ner na ner ner"

This was me doing it late last year...
haha - nice one - just mucking around this morning after gym....

The Non dominant side is just weird!!

Also excuse list as follows: Just finished 60 minute gym sessions, never used them before, no glove.....

I'll get 120mph next time.... lol

Nice spreadsheet....:) - you got a copy of it?
