Golf Thread

Used my sim to find a ball with more spin last night, as a recent lesson, I discovered I'm not quite hitting down enough and my spin numbers are very low. I know it's mostly down to my irons (TM Sim2), but really enjoy doing the exploratory work myself:

Looked through my set of 'found' balls and did some googling to find some good spinning balls, did some tests on a few mizunos I heard good things about.
You hadn't seen this video by any chance?

If we fancy doing a OCUK meet-up, can anyone interested, DM me the first part of your post-code. I'll jot it down on a google map to triangulate, we can figure out where the majority of people are and try to accommodate as many people as possible.

I'm CF83, for example.
DM sent :)

Sent you mine, I'm fairly happy to travel!

I have, and that inspired me to find my own ball with a good amount of spin to match my clubs and swing.
My clubs are strong lofted, which lowers spin.
I hit a draw, which lowers spin.
I use a low spinning ball (prov1)
No wonder it always rolls a mile :p

I'm not changing my swing, I can tell you that. New ball should work a treat I hope!

TBH, since it's only the first part of your post-code, like Maccy has done, just respond here if interested. I'll get it added. I'll give it a few days and we can have a look at the results.

DM'd before reading the rest so I'll put it here as well, SN12, willing to travel :)

Looks like Swindon is the most central now!

I mean it'd be convenient but also Swindon... :p

How realistic is the distance a golf balls carry is from a range mat compared to grass?

I took my 60 degree and I was hitting the ball about 80yds
SW about 100yds
PW about 125yds
9i about 140yds
Not sure if my swing has improved, and it is more difficult to get a feeling of whether a shot is pure from a mat.

Also, hit about a dozen balls with my driver, hitting around 180yds, not very long, but I believe I’m starting to overcome the slice shot which has always kept me from using the big stick.

Don't set your expectations of 250 yards to be low, that's incredibly good for us amateurs. That alone could quite easily get you down to low single figures if the rest of your game (approach, short and putting) all come together too.

As a stat, my Arccos data says that my average drives of 220 in my last game was equal to the average 11 handicapper. If you were driving 250 on average, you'd be roughly a 3 handicapper if you only compared driver distance. Hats off and all that :p

Looking back I phrased it poorly. I know 250 is a decent drive, I just play often with several guys who hit a ball like I’ve never seen!

Also never helps seeing plenty of YouTubers/videos hit clubs distances I could never comprehend, really makes you question your own skill.

I’d be down for a little OCuk meet up, NG11 for me.

It's a bit of a trap to fall into I think. A lot of Youtubers where essentially born into the game and have been refining technique and speed since they where young. There's also those annoying gits who just seem to have been graced with great club head speed from the off, though I think they're few and far between.

Generally you'll hit better off mats simply because the 'turf' interaction is more forgiving. It's all relative though, range balls aren't exactly distance balls and depending on how the range itself is built you could loose or gain distance. Mine plays slightly up hill and generally I can add 10-20 yards out on the course if I catch a shot well. There's also the fact that a range environment is more comfortable to hit in. On the course where every shot counts we tend to slow everything down.
