Golf Thread

Did something interesting the last couple of days. When it was slow, went out to a flat hole and at the 150 marker, tested various shots and swing levels to see what yardages I’m getting. That’s the range I need to get my confidence up in and just know what I’m hitting and have less to think about.

Maybe an idea that can help others.

Kinda related but doing a gapping session in a simulator/launch monitor seems to have worked out well for me really, I think mostly just cause of the confidence in club selection really...

150 yards is also kinda awkward for me as well, hybrid will easily do it but also likely to fly/bounce/roll way long, 5 Iron is theoretically the club (152 yards carry according to the gapping session above) but also isn't the club I've got the greatest confidence in...

In other news I'm taking my dad to Basingstoke hospital next Wednesday morning, turns out there's a golf course round the corner so booked 9 holes to keep me busy, result :p

Also I'm gonna be in Great Yarmouth over the weekend, might want to try some golf, anybody got any suggestions? Kinda thinking maybe another 9 holes, really starting to enjoy the 'ease' of 9 vs 18 tbh...

Think 5 iron will be hard if you’re not generating the speed to get it to launch and land with a good descent angle.

Maybe hybrids down to 7 down would be a better fit? I don’t have any bravado about the clubs I use. Just whatever gets the job done.

Got my wedge fitting booked in for next Friday for when I hopefully pick my irons up, 48 and 52 seeing as the PW is so strongly lofted. Very close to having my bag sorted for the next few years, just need to get my hands on a decent Driver, 3 and 5 Woods now. The G425 is coming down in price quite a bit and can be had for £350 now, same for the woods. Exciting times!

It's not really a club head speed (although more would always be better :p) but, like most of my striking/swing issues, it's closing the club face and having the shot leak out to the right to varying degrees that's the issue more than launch/flight.

I dislike hybrids, a bag full of woods perhaps, 11 wood anyone?

Be interesting to hear what you go for, still undecided for mine, after my fitting/test session I found out the Mizuno T-22 I was oh so tempted by is being replaced by the T24 in a couple of weeks, so either the new shiny or a cheaper old shiny might be the plan, either way shiny

What is it you dislike about Hybrids? I used to feel the same as they had a tendency to snap hook which I later found out was due to early extension. Love my 4 hybrid now though, very rarely does it fail me.

So I've got 2 hybrids, a '4 hybrid' that came as part of the Spalding package set when I started which is just junk and a TaylorMade Burner 3 rescue which is 'ok' and in the bag currently. I've also tried a few in the shop like the Stealth 2 HD and Mavrik.

With the TM Burner it's ok and fits in the bag but I feel the distance is a bit variable, sounds weird typing it but I feel like 2 very similar strikes can get 15-20 yards different carry, not had much directional issue really (maybe my slice is counter-acting the snap hook ) if anything I had a habit of topping it but not done that for a while.

I kinda don't see the point in them as well? At least the ones I've used on course don't seem to be great in rough so why not just have a fairway wood?

And on that note, to me, fairway woods look better, the bigger but more rounded shape appeals to my eye far more than the squarer chunky hybrids...

That's fair. I'm the opossite personally, much prefer the sleeker, smaller profile of the hybrids and I much prefer the flight compared to woods. I also can't play any sort of a fade with a 3 wood which is the shot shape I naturally lean into whereas with a hybrid I can really get some movement going. It's my safe distance club. I know I can get it 200 with an easy swing and it's a very close pal when Driver decides to misbehave.

Absolutely humbled last night.

I'm typically a fairly long hitter - it's rare that I play with someone who's longer. Had a random join myself and my playing partner late on in the round - had a chat, he noticed that I'd taken a 2 iron off the tee. Got chatting about it, I offered for him to have a swing with it if he liked.
Onto the 18th hole, a 605 yard par 5. Both hit tee shots, he ends up 308 yards from the centre of the green. Asks to hit my 2 iron off the deck! One practice swing, and he absolutely flushes it, beautiful fade. As it's airborne, I comment "if that's in the hole you can keep the club".

It stops 6 inches from the hole  Never seen anything like it! Tap in eagle and I almost lost my favourite club :o

Superb! Bet his spin numbers are glorious to behold with that sort of distance...

Does anyone here game a mini driver? I've been thinking about trying one for a while now.

Only saw a few shots as he joined us on the 16th hole, but both drives (and consequent second humbling shots..) seemed very relaxed - but carrying around 250 yards. I was pleased to match his drive on the 18th, shanked my second shot about 100 yards though :o

Always the way. See someone doing the Ernie Els special and they may as well have rocket boosters on the clubhead. Funny old game...

Played again this morning, even got to tee off early so headed out at 6:50-ish, took about 1h20m for the round at a very leisurely place, quite enjoy the morning rounds really :)

Didn't feel like I was striking it amazingly well really but kept it in play/safe so nothing too bad. Good bit is my short game/chipping seems back on form, hit some lovely chips including the 4th hole where I chipped in for birdie \o/ 'Only' my 4th ever chip-in, considering I chip a lot cause I enjoy it so much, texas wedge is boooooring :p

I was also out yesterdar afternoon and it was silly hot, a non-golfing mate joined me for the walk and had a great moment where he asked whether a putt was straight and I said out loud what my read was of the green which proved to be spot in, didn't get it in but from ~20ft away I got it about 1-2ft behind the hole, but the main bit was the read was perfect and someone else knew how amazing I am

Roasting out there today.

Played with my dad this morning - yellow tees at his home course. Played well.

Shot 74 gross off the yellows after a bogie/bogie/birdie start (par 70) - So warm.....

Greens were stunning - as usual at his home course. (st cuthberts)

I’m out tomorrow afternoon. Last weekend was bad enough, but it’s going to be warmer tomorrow.

Finally did it boys! Broke 45 on my home course on the front 9

It was hot on the course this afternoon! Playing the last 2-3 rounds I’ve had a target of breaking 100 and I came so close today, my best score this summer, 103. Played Berrington Hall again, hitting my tee shot on the first into water didn’t help my mindset, and the outward 9 scored worse than the back 9 which is a first. Also, scored my first birdie of the summer too
No golf next weekend unfortunately and I’m not sure about the weekend after either.
