Played on Thursday evening after work - played out of my skin on the front 9 - 4 over!

Then came the back 9, all went to ****, double bogey on the 10th, leading to some frustrations, plus starting to run short on time, so hurried a little. Ended up 16 over, which is still great for me, but was hoping to continue some good momentum.

Starting to look like the light is fading a little too quickly to get a full 18 in after work now - thankfully I can skip a few holes fairly easily at my home course and walk straight from hole 10 to 15, so cuts out some time. Soon enough it'll be 9 holes, then strictly range time in the evenings :(

Started with a beautiful 4-4 start yesterday - birdie birdie..... :)

Then went double, bogie, bogie, double, then 3 pars..... Wild front 9 of 40!!!

Lost a ball on 11 and that was it - finished with 85 in the end. Rubbish.

Greens are mega slow at our home course - compared with the greens 24 hours before at my dad's course where they are like lighting!! Struggled to adjust - that's for sure!

As posted, my target before year end is to break 100. Did you guys set yourself a target and have you managed to achieve it yet?

I just focus on ball striking. I spend a lot of time on the range and prob play way less than most, ratio wise. As I get more dialed in with the ball striking, the score kinda takes care of itself. I just look at the score as a validation for the work being put in.

Everyone's different though. I know some that rarely use the practice facilities and just want to play on the course.

Wanted to break 90 which I've done once or twice. Also wanted to learn how to shape shots semi reliably which I'm half way there with, especially a fade, only problem is I can only play extreme versions of either to get myself out of trouble, not shape them gracefully to a certain spot. They're more like semi pushes and pulls a lot of the time. Really pleased with my progress this year though, the lessons once a fortnight have definitely helped and aiming for a career in the business has really given me a sense of purpose whenever I go out to play.

I started off with trying to break 90 once which I managed, then changed it to consistently under 90 which is almost there bar the odd howler.

Get better with my driver which has thankfully happened. Went from being a club that I would go months without using to now being my favourite, and probably most consistent club.

Staying consistent over a whole round as well. Used to get in my head and a have a mid-round meltdown which would kill my score. New mental attitude is no thoughts, only vibes.

Had such a nice F9 at Thornbury in Bristol on the weekend.
One triple in there, but 5 pars and 3 bogeys.
I've been fighting a shank recently and this is the first time it popped up in the round. I know I'm drifting too close to the ball with my PW or less, resulting in me going straight into the trees. No further shanks after that, but shot a decent 41 on front.
It was frikkin boiling and I lost my head on the 10th and never recovered.

I spoke out my plan, as there's water down the right:

Me: "Aiming at left rough, and try to hit it straight or maybe a little fade to give me a wedge in to the green"
My friend who's a member there, said nothing.
Me: Hit the exact ball I wanted, walked off feeling pleased with myself.
Friend: "That's probably out of bounds mate, can you see those little white stakes?
Me: "White stakes? Can't see any"
Friend: "Oh, well they are there and they're in the middle of the tree line, hard to see, but you should probably hit another"

Head's gone. As I felt he should have at least told me it was OB over there.
Ps. I hate internal white stakes, where it's just onto another fairway, makes no sense.

Hit another one, probably about 5 yards in from the water edge into thick rough and a horrible shot out from there. Another triple on the cards.
Card felt ruined after that and couldn't get over it. Lessons learned.

Always pays to read the local rules on the back of the scorecard, assuming it was mentioned on there! Certainly in my limited experience internal OB tends to be listed.

Been a long weekend, played golf Friday morning then off for a family weekend before heading back this morning and playing another round this afternoon. Today we did a bad thing and played as a 6-ball rather than split up, it was dead, like literally dead, starting at 14:00 and we weren't even that slow, finally let a 2 ball through on the 17th but they were the first golfers we saw. Ah well :p

Friday was 'ok', scored 106, driver wasn't really there but Irons were working well. First 4 holes go pars 5, 3, 5, 3, I scored 7, 3, 7, 3. After that I kept the driver in the bag. Front 9 was 48 and I'm always happy to break 50, still, back 9 though just fell apart, blaming the heat really :p

Today was interesting though, +2 through 5 with 1 birdie, 2 pars, a bogey and double bogey. After that it kinda went a bit 'hot and cold', 2 more pays and 2 bogeys (rest double or above), some very bad holes though. Scored 100 overall (49 front, 51 back), second best score on that course so reasonably happy.

Best moment was driving the green on the par 4 18th, unfortunately that came after driving the first ball into the lake so came away with a 5 :p

I went a bit crazy and instead of 'just' breaking 100 I put the target of breaking 90, given we're towards the end of the year and I've broken 100 once (twice with a technicality)... Saying that I'm going golfing in Marrakech in December, so a few months more practice/training/playing/lessons and then some lovely ~20-25c temps and nice hard fairways may just make it...

Does feel like he should've said it was OB left :/ what hole was it? (only played once and been a while so doubt I'll remember but hey, nosy :p)

For me it was all about trying to eliminate BIG mistakes, getting rid of those triple/quad bogeys for a start - for example taking a long iron of the tee to keep it safe rather than taking driver and hammering it into the trees/water. In my mind it was better to take one more shot to make the green, rather than swing as hard as I can then have to take a drop/recovery shot. Remember, to break 100 you don't need to make any pars.

Finally treated myself to a new (my first ever new!) putter yesterday. Tried a few in American Golf and had a chat with the helpful guy - had my mind made up on an Odyssey Spider but then I thought I should just try the equivalent Scotty Cameron, and Christ it felt good. So yes, ordered!
Went for the Phantom X 11.5.

Can I have a go?

I started off the year quite well, I even won another competition and got myself down to a 12 handicap then over the past 4-6 months my swing has just gone. Now I've always sliced the ball but had the distance / consistency to "get away" with it. It got to the point where I had gone from shooting in the low 80s consistently to battling to break a 100 which as you can imagine was not fun. I made the decision to seek professional help, firstly to get my swing back and secondly to get some distance back. For example I'd gone from hitting my PW 120 yards to now not reaching 90 yards.

Fast forward a month and I've had 4 lessons and have pretty much completely got rid of a slice (now a duck hook on the bad ones!) and gained more yardage than ever before. I have gone with a locally recomendded Pro (not one from my own course but a nearby one). He's been such a pleasure to be around and just little tweaks here and there have transformed my swing. I originally booked 5 lessons but will be booking more through the winter so that come spring when the competitions restart my now high handicap should put in a good position to do very well.

Forget the Youtube videos, go see a pro folks!

we need some pictures

Odyssey Spider putter? I've not been following golf for the last 2 years but should that not be TaylorMade? I could be mistaken.

I played my first round in 18 months on Friday at Whitefield and I can't believe how well I played. It's like the 2 year layoff has dropped most of my bad habits. Getting the bug back just as summer comes to a close. Although now I'm actually looking forward to watching the Ryder Cup.

Part of me actually prefers the off season. Courses are emptier and cheaper fees!
