Understand that - After one of my lessons I had half an hour free with the trackman set up, and wanted to change the type of club from 7 iron but didn't know how. Refused to go out and ask until I left a good shot on the screen!

He was pretty impressed, but he doesn't need to know the truth...

I think it's more fitness based for me. I haven't been to the gym in years and sometimes I can feel tired with my swing which hinders everything.
So gym for some weights etc and then the fitness may come which will improve everything

flexibility and rotational fitness are keys. Strength - yes of course - but rotational flexibility / core strength are very important.

One very overlooked thing as well is food/drink etc whilst playing - your out for 4 hours etc - need to be fueled. I eat a small Soreen bar every 4/5 holes, drink around 1.5 litres of water and usually have a banana/apple as well whilst playing - made a big difference for me as I used to get tired around 13/14 holes in.

Aye, the food thing is often overlooked especially as the culture of half way houses and cart girls isn't such a big deal here as it is in the US and other parts of Europe (unless you're playing prestigious courses, it seems)

It's nut and bananas for me, usually with a ton of water as I sweat like crazy, especially when I have to put the waterproofs on. If I don't eat then my game will sag coming home.

I vary depend on how healthy I'm trying to be, can't beat bananas or twix, both work wonders :p And yeah I get through easily 1.5 litres, usually take 2.5 with me and have been known to run out!

Played today, was on the fence cause the weather didn't look great and we were starting at 11 with the rain due to start at 14:15-ish... But then decided I'd go for it, especially as the tee sheet was basically empty for like 10 slots in front of us.

We actually started a bit early, around 10:50, absolutely zero warmup trying to get the round done, always a good way to start :p

I guess in hindsight the first 4 holes went basically as expected, I sliced that first drive and things didn't really improve that much. +12 through 4 isn't ideal...

But then!

5th hole, par 3, downwind, ~145 yards to the flag over a lake basically needing a ~115 yard carry, one of the more imposing holes really. Picked a 7 iron, expecting a bit more from the wind really, but hit it beatifully straight at the flag, ended about 10 feet short, 2 putt for par.

Then I par'd the 6th, bogied the 7th, par'd the 8th, bogied the 9th and I'm +14 through 9, that's not so bad after all :p

Then I par'd the 10th for the first time ever :D

Did have a few more terrible holes, would've been nice to continue the par/bogey train but I'm still me :p Ended up with 100 reduced to 98 by the england golf app (a 9 on the par 4 3rd and a 10 on the final par 5 both reduced by 1) still a solid round for me :)

@SKILL - getting to that time of the year where scores really don't matter. Just playing/hit balls over winter and keeping moving is my aim.

Last couple of comps tomorrow and next weekend and then that's our club done for the year. Winter practice sessions ahead

Stableford today for us off the front tees. Bit of wind/bit of rain etc.

Scrappy day, holed nothing of note today - 9 pars/8 bogies and a double. However hit 5 of 6 fairways I had driver out today which is decent. Course starting to play very long as no run etc.

My mate who plays off 28 - 36 points with 3 no scores - all holes he went in bunkers and took 3/4/5 to get out - If only he could get out a bunker he would have won the comp by miles. Best score was 37.

Stableford as well today, society game at Cumberwell Park, weather was nice though, blue skies and sun so shorts and polo weather obviousy, probably for the last time this year :p Not too windy either :)

Not the best game really, couple of good pars and some other nice shots but 29 points, had worse but nothing to write home about.

They changed their rules to 'carry if you can' so went with a half-set (Putter, 60-degree, 48-degree, 9i, 7i, 5w and Driver), kinda missed my hybrid on occasion but otherwise it was fine, first time carrying even a half-set over 18 holes, done 9 regularly as my local goes carry only over winter but first time doing 18, not sure my feet ache any more than usual really :p

In other news has anyone travelled (as in abroad/plane) with their clubs? Dunno whether to just go for a cheapo amazon basics travel bag or spend far far more on a 'better' bag/hard case...

I'd be interested in this also, a group of us are looking to do abroad golf next year as a year end treat for our personal monthly competition.

Went out this weekend for the first proper round after lessons for my swing. Scored worse than normal, but came away much happier as iron shots are starting to make sense and some started to fly. Took a 6 iron out for a 180 yard hole and overshot it which was pleasing and frustrating in equal measure as I ended in some horrible stuff.

Probably a lesson or two on driving (I keep striking down on the ball instead of up, and my adjustments seem to have no effect) combined with repetition over winter in the nets, and next year looks a lot more exciting!

Went to try a few utility irons out at my pro shop yesterday. Didn't have too many in but instantly fell in love with the Mizuno Pro Fli Hi 3 iron, Project X Hzrdus Smoke stiff shaft. Was averaging 192 with an easy swing and could get it up to 205ish with a bit of pace which is about where my Hybird sits. The flight on the thing was incredible, really penetrating, not too high at apex and felt super fast off the face. Sits so well behind the ball as well, looks fantastic. Picking it up next week :)

Wait until you get to the course, you won't be able to hit it :D

I played on Sunday with my society.
This month, it was at my home course! The boys had me as favourite as winner for this month, seeing as I had home advantage.
The only thing I won, was the wooden spoon. Couldn't hit a thing and felt lethargic.

We started on the 10th, which i've never done, but it was at the request of the pro here, not sure why though, as the F9 was completely clear. Back 9 is the harder and longer side of the course, but either way, I made 9 points on the back and 9 points on the front :p  Worst round of my life! Took it in my stride though.

Went home and woke up the next morning, ready to right my wrongs.
Went back out, knowing I can play much better than that. Took my tripod with me and decided to work on a few things.
Saw myself drifting with alignment last night, so decided I'd put a club down, align it correctly and align myself to that, to get a good baseline.
I was striping it! Still noticed on a hole or two, that I still started to drift on alignment slightly, but it's not too bad overall. Gains!
One other thing, I notice that my speed training is making me lose sync out on the course, so decide to swing easy. It was a night and day difference, nice straight flights, pretty accurate, albeit not so far, still enjoyable though! Much more fun to score low than hit long drives into the rough.

Arccos map & Scorecard at the end.

Braved the range last night. Completely pointless. Wind was into and I couldn't even get my 7 iron past 110 as a result. Was good fun trying to shape draws into the wind though

This weather is awful at the moment.
Dying to get out on the course, but I'm sat on the reserve lists for the club comp 'cocks of the north' - which is a pairs comp, 4BBB matchplay on Sunday. I've entered as a reserve as I don't have anyone who can make it every Sunday alongside me.
I'll have someone next season, since 4 of my golf mates are joining the club next April, so going to be looking forward to that!

Reserve list is there in case someone's partner can't make it and I get to fill in for the week. The usual Saturday comp is already completely filled up, with no spots available, since it's winter condensed hours due to light and still 130 players (full).

Have any of your clubs started playing the Winter mats yet? (if you have them)

Yeah, the weather sucks right now and we're not even getting it as bad as some. I try to avoid playing in the rain but it's just so intermittent there's basically no time for even 9 holes it seems... Might try and get to the range at least today.

No mats yet here but they have just implemented the 'carry if you can' bit, so not a complete trolley ban which they try to avoid but kinda the same for me as I am capable of carrying :p I can't imagine it'll be long before the mats though.

My course is only 9 holes but with 2 tee boxes, when not using mats, I think it's from next month onwards that all the comps are 9 holes rather than 18, which kinda opens them up to going to winter mats.

I've got 7 courses on my ticket and only two are on mats at the moment. That'll change after this weekend I'd imagine considering we're getting battered by 50mph winds and torrential rain right now...

Yep, mats for last two days at mine. Amazed they've kept the course open to be honest, it's a fairly flat course but the run off in some fairways causes flooding on a few of the dips and the greens get far too spongey. Depressing. After the crappy summer I feel really under golfed this season.
