Golf Thread

Has anyone ever had to return a golf club bought online? Not sure if I need to box the whole thing up (I don't have such a box...) or just protecting the head is sufficient? It was part of a set, something has come loose inside the driver head, sounds like a small ball bearing pinging round in it.
Is the driver adjustable? If so, you should be able to separate the head from the shaft to make it touch easier. Perhaps if it is only within the head, you may be able to send just that back.

I've usually wrapped the shaft up well in either bubble wrap or packing paper, removed the head if possible, place within the headcover and wrap with bubble wrap. I've typically boxed them together making sure the shaft is secure and not rattling around. Perhaps slightly overkill, but wouldn't want anything penetrating the box and scoring the shaft. Worth having a bit of structure if possible too, as I could very much see a courier bending or crushing the box.

@jaybee that sounds kinda crappy :/ Maybe go to another AG or maybe better <another golf store>?

Out for golf again today, decided to carry again, so back-to-back days of 18 holes and carrying both times... Not sure that was my smartest decision :p

Overally not a bad round though, just the first ~13 holes were kinda solid and then it seemed to fall apart for those 4-5 holes, maybe a bit mental but pretty sure the big part was just being tired/achy, especially the shoulders.

Thinking of carrying more often, it's nowhere near as bad as I thought really :)

No golf for me at the moment. Both courses were closed today after 33mm of rain last night. That was on top of two big dumps in the last week. It was largely dry today but more, potentially heavy, rain in the forecast. Will be interesting to see if they get back open for the weekend. At least the new drainage they installed on the 9th/10th fairways of the Tower course is getting a good workout!

Got fitted for my irons at my local Affordable Golf (basically was an American Golf store before the name change)

No pressure - great fitting, loads to try and test etc. Guy was excellent. Full Trackman setup.

Sounds like a crap store/lacking staff/training etc.

Also highly recommend Scottsdale if your anywhere near one - superb fitting a couple of weeks ago for driver.

I ended up managing to get an appointment at a different American Golf earlier today (to get it done sooner) for my son to get him a driver. Turned up and had to wait ages for the previous session to finish. Store was not very busy. A customer came in with his kid and promptly left. Didn't seem very satisfied after chatting to someone about something. Boxes all over the floor. Wasn't filling me with confidence but onwards.

Got into the custom fit area and I have to say overall I found it less helpful than watching some youtube videos on what to buy. It was that bad. I'm not going to call out name/description of person or store as I don't want to really do that as it will be obvious who the person was, but...yeah it was really rubbish.
The area you swing in was simply not big enough. On my lads backswing, he hit the net and some other clubs a couple of times early on, and member of staff just stayed quiet, rather than going "don't worry", so the whole time he was worried and had to adapt his swing to come more inside on the back swing, to not hit a bloomin net! I mean wtf!?

Numbers started coming up, but instantly flashed away so I couldn't really have discussions about numbers. Staff member didn't really want to or seem interested in doing so either. I mentioned I saw the ball speed and did they have swing speed to help see for which shafts would suit and the response was "no we don't have swing speed as it's not for coaching". Whatever that means. The tees were quite low as well. I mean this is fundamental stuff here. It was not an adjustable tee, just literally tees, and the bit you hit off the mat seemed to be inset and slightly lower to give just enough difference that normal tee height was slightly lower. That threw him off too.

Staff member gave him literally one random club to try to see if a higher loft helped, but no mention of what shaft it was. Just some random Wilson club. I asked if he could try a Taylormade M4, Stealth, Ping G430, etc etc. Even just a couple of the ones they actually had on the shopfloor. They had an excuse for every single one as to why he couldn't. Was very weird. The advice was totally conflicting and confusing and they just did not seem to really want to sell us anything. In the end I cut it short and politely thanked them and left. It was going no where.

I was expecting them to analyse the numbers, have a load of shafts and heads ready to try, and generally advise on what he needed.

I'm going to put this down as just a bad store I think, and try another one. What do you guys think?
Think I’d be looking to report that back to AG - there must be a feedback or complaints contact somewhere on their website?

How long did the build take? I'm looking at getting fitted for new wedges soon and was tempted to try Scottsdale but it's an hour's drive from where I am. Only really fancying it if there is some other stuff near-by if building the clubs takes a couple of hours.

Scottsdale was ace - new one in Glasgow - guy was first class, very knowledgeable etc - Used my existing shaft, new head, changed the adapter etc - All in all after the fitting - took about 20/25 minutes in the build room to sort it. Having a natter etc. Cool place. Was a quiet Friday morning mind you.... no one else around.

Maybe I should.
If I hit an object on my first back swing in a fixed setup where you can't move the matt/tee, I'd probably walk out instantly. I mean if you can't swing the club without fear of hitting something, it can't go ahead. I didn't want to ruin the experience for him so persisted but, I feel actually I did more damage in staying. It was on a highway to nowhere from the first swing.

Off to St Andrews tomorrow with a mate - No Old Course I'm afraid....

Mate is getting a putter fitting for a LAB Putter.... Dragging me along as I'm a geek for that sort of stuff. Bit of lunch and a wander - Might try and get on the Himalayas Putting green for a knock around.

Rain hasn't really let up here, continual showers. This means of the two courses at my club the Cathedral remains closed while the Tower opened yesterday but is down to fourteen holes. Forecast over the next two weeks looks like more of the same so could be like this for a while :(

Might be simulator golf only for a while :p

LAB Putter Fitting for my mate in St Andrews today was good. Guy was excellent, used the SAM Putting Lab Tool for his fitting.

Mates putting isn't the best at time but the fitter really didn't want to say it but eventually did - He's got the putting "yips" looking at the data - His old TM Rossa putter isn't helping.

After some practice, and a few tips from the fitter, tried out the various options. Ended up getting fitted into a LAB Mezz 1 putter with Accra shaft.... Improvement was immense from his old putter. Data/output was well explained, fitter was really nice guy.

Whist they were finalising the colours/details etc - Had a putt with the Mezz, looks horrible to a "traditionalist" like me (Scotty boy) - But can't argue with the results - I holed six 10ft putts in a row with it

He's ordered one - not cheap at £600 but he's been looking for a while for a new putter and very happy with fitting/ improvement etc. Should be here in a few weeks.

No Himalayas Putting green - pouring with rain - looked miserable on the first tee at the Old Course.

Much golf today, did the usual Woodlands round this morning, it was the last weekly comp of the year so would've been rude not to...

What a round, not really looked over it yet as only just got in but was playing solidly, saw on my Garmin I hit 47 on the front 9, tried not to think too much and just kept playing, hit some good holes, some less good, 47 again on the back 9 :) 94 total, 46 points stableford which I reckon might get me the win  and a bit of a drop to the old handicap :p

Then decided to stop by the local club on the way home to do the 9-hole roll-up, I signed up to the winter greensomes the other day and been told I should probably do some proper comp cards at my local course (most of my rounds there are solo) so why not do 27 holes walking (last 9 carrying, first 18 with a trolley)... Didn't play anywhere near as well, 55 shots for 13 points, but hey it's golf and a card in the bank so whatevs :)

I'm pretty tired now :p
