Golf Thread

glad to see lots of golfers on OCUK :)

This is my second year of playing and i still play off (and most weeks am spot on) a handicap of 28. Difference being this year i have joined a club, taken lessons and looking to get to 24 by the end of the year. Should be tought but all i need is some consistency in tee shots. My irons are consistent and long so if i can control the rage on the tee then it should go well!

Just setting off for a society day at Langley Park GC, 36 holes of goodness and perfect weather :D

So came second in the morning singles stableford with 32 points. Drove it great but putted poorly.
Shocking in the afternoon playing pairs better ball and didn't contribute at all. Maybe just tired - after all, 36 holes is an effort for anyone - but the worse I played the more annoyed I got and that made me play even worse.

Hi chaps. Am looking for a new hobby and would like to give Golf a try. Never really played before apart from a few rounds of pitch and putt and a bucket of balls at the driving range once in a blue moon.

Will take some lessons etc to get started but am after some recommendations for a decent set of beginners clubs to get me up and running. Would like a full set with bag etc and budget around £200 - £250.

Have seen these as an example..any good ?

Any links and advice appreciated ! :)

If you're just starting out, I'd recommend having the lessons first. Ask if you can borrow a club for the first lesson, which I'm sure wouldn't be a problem. Once you've done that, I'd look for second-hand clubs before you think about new ones.

Just a quick congratulations to Rory McIlroy who played some incredible golf yesterday. His 5-iron into 15 was just majestic.

indeed - he only played 18 shots from the 12th tee!!!!

Quite Brilliant stuff.

Saturday Medal for me -(11 handicapp) out in 3 over par, playing very steady, shocking back nine of 1 par, 7 bogies and a double!!! for net 72:rolleyes:

They'll do absolutely fine as a beginners set. I bought a very similar set for £200 by wilson about 2 years ago now and they are spot on for learning the game. Although be prepared, if you get bit by the bug it becomes very expensive! I recently just upgraded the 3 wood and 4 hybrid that came in my wilson beginners set to a callway 3 wood and callaway 4 hybrid, They each cost £140 & £120 respectively, so combined cost way more than my entire wilson set!

well started off with 4 pars last night then went off the rail, back to back par 5s next, great drive then hooked one out of bounds and walk away with a 7, then went 6763...bad back 9, all in all 7 pars and carded a 90:eek:

back to the practice area for me...

Can't believe I've been here this long and missed this thread! FFS! lol

Golf = wow, bloody love the game!

RE: the link above, if you are just starting out then I would seriously consider just taking a peek at Ebay for a few cheap clubs. I started playing 6 years ago, my first set was a bag full of Wilson blades! I just hit the range, got swinging, watched it on TV, went played some more and the bug just hit.
I absolutely recommend taking a few lessons to get the fundamentals worked out first. With the fundamentals drilled into your head, each shot starts with the same procedure, and from that point onwards you begin to see what golf is about - repetition, repetition and repetition. You don't have to have a Rory McIlroy swing (the best world golf by the way!!) to play good golf (look at Jim Furyk for a odd looking way to swing a golf club) - all you have to do is make sure once you find out what swing works for you (on all the good shots you hit) and repeat it over and over again. Easy huh! lol

RE: clubs, from the word go you really aren't going to figure out what you like the most, not until you get a bit better, and get a feel for the game. I myself swear by Mizuno irons, MP67's to be precise, but only use Taylormade woods. Titliest wedges, and a Scotty Cameron for the money stick. I won't swap from Mizuno irons probably ever now. But it took me about 4 sets to get there and realise that for my swing and game these suited me the most.

Enjoy the game, its bloody great :D

Oh, and to reply to this, I was sat watching the 3,3,3,3,3,3 finish with my mouth open in amazement! Rory is the first name I look for on a leaderboard these days. His golf swing is as perfect as it gets and would love to see him eclipse every record there is.

Boars Head, but try to get out and see as many courses as I can. Just had a couple of rounds at Mannings Heath which is a stunning course.

I played Crowborough once with my golf society and liked the course but hated the snobbery of the club house.

Some courses can be like that. I played Ganton, probably the best/2nd best course in Yorkshire (that and Alwoodly). Golf course was great, proper millionaires golf, no one else on the course but me and my mates. Going down one of the fairways and a spitfire and hurricane did a low fly-by (not for us i might add, they seemed to be doing some kind of dog fight routine), was like something out of a 2nd world war film! :)

In the clubhouse itself it was very strange, we managed to get a sneaky look around with the steward, but were warned if members saw us we could get kicked out, all due to the fact that unless you are wearing a jacket and tie/crevatte you are only allowed in the gentlemans lounge. Was even funnier when they brought soup & roll with sandwiches for us in between rounds, you are only allowed cutlery in the restaurant area, to get in their you need jacket/tie, so no cutlery to eat soup or cut the roll/spread butter! So there's me any my mates all ripping the rolls open and spreading the butter with our fingers, then picking the soup bowls up (to be honest they were more like mugs anyway) and drinking from them.......

A strange day, but it's their club so they make the rules.

Anyone here a fan of the Cobra Woods and Drivers? If so, what are your opinions?

I have just bought a cheap second hand S2 3 Wood to give it a go.

Played today, wee 9 hole, and was much better! Going to play as regular as possible, then after my holidays in june get some lessons.

Well, after my last poor outing I seem to have got going really well again. Took a quick lesson to be told I was standing 2" too close. Step back and everything feels great again, go figure

Went out yesterday and shot 79, not bad for a 24 handicapper :D

Really going to push to get mid teens this year now, just need to keep putting in the practise.

79 off 24!!! Lol, nice work! teen's aren't going to be much of an issue with that score! Was it a comp and did you get a cut?

76 for me this evening, playing off 6, let the back nine go to pot (was nackered after a long day) - however off to Ashbury tomorrow for 5 days - Bring it on :D
