Many different shots can be played around the greens.

The bog standard chip i'd advise is take your SW or 60 if you have one. Address the ball with it in the middle of your stance, push your hands forward about 2 inches to get ahead of the ball. Without breaking your wrists, turn your whole torso arms and shoulders in one movement away as a unit until your club is around parallel to the ground (further or shorter depending on length of chip), to initiate the downswing; turn everything in one movement, trying to bring everything through in one motion, act as if your trying to hit the ball with your chest, the arms will follow with the club and you should just clip the ball off the fairway/rough.

Remember to keep your eyes fully on the ball and not to move your head around. Look for the ball about a full second or two after its left the clubface. Biggest mistake with this shot is usually breaking your wrists and flipping it up into the air, creating fats and thins. If you want to hit a bump and run type of shot, exact same technique, but take an 8i or similar, ball back in the stance and don't hit it as hard as it will shoot out.

When the ground gets wet make sure to open your clubface up so that it doesn't dig into the ground else you'll fat everything. Hopefully you shouldn't have to worry to much about that now considering were reaching summer :D

Any questions about what i've just said don't be afraid to ask.

I think the golfing god is toying with me! Played 11 holes yesterday and managed 2 birdies on a couple of the par 4's and an eagle on the par 5 (lucky bounce over the bunker from 200yds hybrid shot left me a 4ft putt). Started out with a 7 on a par 4 too. +4 for the 11 holes. What's the betting i dont repeat that in the comp on saturday........

Really need to work on the consistancy, though doesnt help just turning up, putting shoes on, teeing up and driving off without so much as a practice swing. :D

As roid says, working on shots to be played around the greens can really help scoring. My general practice now at the range is a warm up with a 6i and pitching wedge for about 10 shots. 10 shots with the driver in a little mini-comp i do, where i see how many of the 10 shots i can keep within a 'corridor' of the range markers that are about a fairway width apart (make a note of the score to have something to try to beat the following week). After that i then split the rest of the balls between the current lesson practice i have been given by my teaching pro and pitching/chipping practice, probably about 30-40 balls each. More often than not after that i go indoors and have a putting comp for an hour or so with my pro whilst having a general chat about life, the world and everything.

Played the PGA National at the Belfry today.
The course was ruined by spiked greens:( that were covered in sand.
The rest of the course was in good nick, but the greens were atrocious.
Good job it was free, otherwise I would have gone off on one!
Still got 28 points off my 18, not bad considering I only scored 5 on the front 8:eek: got a text message that played with my mind for a while. (phone was on silent;))
2 lads I took with me really enjoyed it bar the greens.

I think we should try to sort something out on here, would be a laugh.

Trying to get some consistency into my game. I have recently been for another lesson and had my grip tweaked somewhat which hasn't helped I suppose, but got to stick with it as I can see the benefits, plus it now feels like both arms are working as one unit.

Played last week and got 42 points with 2 dings on the card, so hoping to get working on knocking my (24) handicap down a fair bit this year. Still enjoying it mind you, even on the bad days, its just great to get out and even better when you catch one perfectly :)

I play off 23 and my problem is that I work offshore and the 3 weeks that I am away really ruins my game, especially the "feel shots" around the green and putting. After a week or so of being back at home I soon get into it again.

Last time I was home I won 2 comps, 43pts both times and have managed to come down from 26 to 23. I am really hoping to get down to 18 this year!!! We had a texas scramble comp a couple of weeks a go and what a laugh that was, anyone else played this format? We came in with nett 46.2 :p

Cant wait to get back home (hopefully in the week) and have a game in prep for a pro-am on the 7th May.

Slipperz :)

Massive disappointment today.

Rushed home from work to tee off in the medal at just short of 4pm. Really not in the right frame of mind and was just crap. Front nine i hit 3/8 fairways and 6/9 greens. Not bad GIR but they are just so un-even and slow at the moment. 3 putted twice which is just so frustrating as both of them wern't really my fault. Ended up just N/R'ing and finishing my round a little annoyed at how poor the condition of the course is.

Be interested to check out the scores when i'm up the club next. Be amazed even if the bandits have shot more than 3 or 4 under their handicap.

Just back from the range where I tried another fairway wood. Today, it was the new Mizuno MP titanium which although very nice and seriously long and defintiely my favourite so far, can't go in the bag until I've tried a Titleist 909F3. I have a 909D3 driver which I really like and it's mental not to try a matching fairway to go with the driver.

So am I for the most part but well,

Titleist 909D3 - bought last year from my bonus.
Honma Persimmon Fairway woods - bought in 1998, staggeringly good shafts with hand-crafted persimmon heads, great feel but a tad short by today's standards.
Titleist 962 irons - bought in 1997 in Singapore, re-gripped last year.
Titleist Vokey wedge - bought of the bay used.
Oddyssey Rossie II - bought in 1995.

So I don't exactly buy into the whole "latest technology" thing either but the new driver was such a revelation compared to my previous Biggest Big Bertha that I have been looking to change the one part that is genuinely outdated.

Actually, now that I think about it, is there any way to get the shafts from my existing woods put into brand new heads?

yeah, I used to get that with my Big bertha which is only a 7 degree but the modern game has decided that it's better to carry farther and roll less than to have low trajectory and lots of run. In the UK, on our hard courses (in Summer) I'm prone to hitting a lot of low runners (I like to carry a 1-iron for kicks) which means I can play chip and runs from 170 yards :)

Played today, like a total muppet, which is obviously why I am still at 24 handicap. Felt like I had no control over my swing at all, I couldn't get comfortable standing over the ball, and kept topping or pushing them right as a result.

Really frustrating as last week I felt I had came a long way. Now I feel as if I have taken 3 steps back :(

Ah well, put it down to one of those things and going to get a lesson midweek.

pretty awful round on saturday after a promising start with 2 decent rounds the weeks before.

Bogie 1st, birdie 2nd and then a Quintuple bogie (8 at par 3) at the next!!!

After that it was hard going, 3 putted 3 times which I think is about 5 years since I did that in one round!! Green are still terrible.

Our greens just got cut and rolled for the first time in about a week and a half yesterday, today i went out with a buddy and all our putts were going about 6-8 feet past the hole for the first 3-4 holes. Was a right laugh. Still bobbly as hell though, sucks :(

Played my first round of golf since my early teens yesterday... I AM TERRIBLE.

Luckily one of my friends is about to leave for a golf scholarship in america after the summer and is going to take me out a few times.

I hit the pin for a HIO today. I'm gutted but delighted with my round. 123 yards, took a 9 iron, hit it sweet as a nut but it looked a little left. Wind took it slightly right and it took the line of the green perfectly, rolled up to the hole and just dinked it and bounced about 6ft away. :(

Bought myself a new Callaway Diablo Edge 3 Wood and Callaway Diablo Edge 24' Hybrid recently.

I can now drive off the tee further with my new 3 wood than i can with my driver :D
