Golf Thread

Got a quick round in today, mainly to see how I was striking the ball. I'm glad to say, having changed pretty much nothing, I did not shank a single ball through 18 holes :D

So glad, I stood over the first few balls just thinking....please just don't shoot straight out right :p

Ive been playing quite a lot at the moment. Got some 2nd hand mizuno tzoid pro irons from ebay for £50 (no 4 iron) Im playing at Pontefract tomorrow and thinking about joining moor allerton.

I dont have a handicap but after a few lessons from my housemate who used to play off 4 im hitting it a lot better. My bottom half didnt move at all before but now that it is my shots are becoming more consistent.

I still need to work out how far I can hit each club though, and sort my aim and putting....

so a lot to work on really. Practice makes perfect!

edit - yesterday some scally robbed my last pro-v1 that I almost drove to the green. Give and take i suppose, we always sneak on the 2nd of that course

Raaar! First society win of the season. 40 points with 3 blobs and 3 x 1 pointers! Scored 37 points in just 12 holes......

I think i'm going to get a cut!

Awesome :D

Played today myself, 1 shank on the 1st with a wedge on approach to the green from an otherwise great start :(

I noticed on another hole from where the wedge had ripped some of the coating off the ball that I had hit it very very close to the shank again, so since that I made sure to give myself a little bit more room, maybe an inch, then no more shanks the rest of the game, so hopefully thats sorted itself now and I can start to get my confidence back :)

Otherwise went okay, 32 points with 4 non scoring holes, but it was pretty darn windy!

I played yesterday and had a really nice front nine but then the rain came and I hate playing in rain so ended up with a horrible back 9. I didn't use my driver the whole round as I'm trying to fight off the temptation to buy a new Titleist 909-F3 3-wood and my trusty old persimmon-headed Honma still gets it out there to 240 or so.

Speaking of 3 woods, have you guys got any suggestions for a cheap one, maybe £50 tops? I would like something similar to a Ping G5, as thats what my driver is, but open to suggestions.

I would spend more than that, but I don't play to a high enough standard to justify it yet.

Have a look for 2nd hand Ping G5/G10's, very nice club. Again, it depends more on the shaft too. A mate of mine just sold his G10 3-wood for £60 so you can get them around that price.

MikeT, i've got the 909f3 3 wood, great club both off the deck and off the tee. Paired it with an Aldilla Voodoo stiff shaft.

Oh, I know it's a great club and it would nicely match my 909D3 with the same shaft as yours but...

...it's £150 new and I spent a long afternoon on Monday trying it alongside an F2 and my Honma. The Honma has a Titanium Carbon stiff shaft and a persimmon head which gives so much feel I can't describe it. Every pro at my local range laughs at it until he tries it and then there's a little silence, another go and then "Oh, that goes rather well doesn't it!"

The F3 goes maybe 10% further but it's not a step-change like my D3 was over its predecesser.

I've had mine from the week of release, i paid £105 for it..........

It's nice to be good mates with the local pro! :D

Would love to have a try of some Honma gear, heard very good reports about them, it's a shame they dont get as much 'space' over here as the big name brands. Oh, and i'm off up the range to try a D3 and D-comp driver next week, really fancy one so i'm hoping for good things.

Hi guys,

Thought I'd join this thread, I have just taken interest again in golf and wanted to share my progress.

First things first, I bought a PW to have a mess around with in the park. Hit some balls and realised something was wrong. My shots were either 'daisy cutters', or theyd end up anywhere but where I wanted them to go...

Houston we have a problem !

I did some shopping around and booked myself a half hour lesson with a Pro at Little Hay Golf club which is my local one in Hemel Hempstead.

He asked me to just hit a ball, analysed what I was doing and made a few adjustments. He said my setup was very good indeed, along with grip.

The main thing I was doing wrong were my hips staying routed, this prevented me from swinging the club anything more than a 1/3 swing. First shot, twisting my hips and following through after the shot and WHOOSH, I hit the ball 120 yards or so with a 7 Iron... I had never hit a ball so far !

It felt great and the "ping" sound when hitting a ball sweetly is addictive.

Since that lesson I have been to the driving range, 6 hole pitch & putt 3 days on the trot, had my first day off yesterday and miss it already !

I managed to par a couple of the Par 3's and my aim over next few weeks is to par each one.

The golf pro at the club was great, for £18 I got half hour lesson, 4 tokens out his pocket to the driving range (60 balls per token) and he gave me the 7 Iron to keep practicing with, awesome.

My main aim is to be able to play a few round with friends without embaressing myself on the 18 hole course. From there we shall see where it leads !

Can anyone recommend a decent 2nd hand set of clubs ?

SiHH

PS: One other thing, is it normal for your hands to hurt after hitting 120 balls on the range ?! My were caning and felt bruised around a couple of the knuckles on the right hand (im right handed).

Welcome to the topsy-turvy world of golf :p

You will get good days, great days, bad days, horrible days, but all it takes is one nice shot to bring you back again :)

With regards your hands being sore, perhaps because its new to you, but could also be you are gripping the club a little too tight, or are hitting down into the mat a little too much. I'm sure this will get better over the next while.

Talking of clubs, depends what you want to spend really. There are lots out there. On the advice of several friends I started (and still use them now) with a brand new set of MD Irons which cost £150. These are apparently very popular with the novice golfer, as they don't cost the earth, yet are really good quality.

I also began with a cheap MD driver, which cost £29 on offer at Nevada Bobs, and have only recently changed to one at £100.

You could spend a fortune, but theres really no need, at least not when you are just starting up.

The only thing I would say is to be careful not to buy something too cheap, as there is a lot of rubbish quality kit out there at the lower end of the price scale.

Once you get the bug though, expect to be emptying your wallet regularly, as it gets expensive pretty quickly. Even with my relatively low budget kit, I have spent £600 on clubs, bag and trolley, it's not long adding up

For 2nd hand, keep your eye out for clubs like Taylormade R7's, Mizuno MX19 or MX17, Cobra S9. They'll be about the £200 mark and would aim to get about 4 or 5i to PW for that price. For new, as Diggsy suggests, the MD clubs are grat value for money (my mate has got a set of MD Blackhawk, really nice and come with a good qaulity shaft in them).

I'd say go with a regular shaft at first as it's easier to control the ball, and can compensate slightly for some swing mistakes.

Other than that, just go out and enjoy yourself and keep the lessons up, you'll soon either give it up or, hopefully, become very addicted and spend every penny you can get hold of on the game! (But, you will become adept at hiding new purchases from the missus though! :D)

2nd hand clubs, take a look at a set of Callaway X-14's with some regular steel shafts (unless your pro says get stiff shafts, I've not seen how fast you swing it - regular should be fine to begin with). They are one of the best cavity backed clubs ever made. Easy as pie to hit, an absolutely fantastic high handicapper who is looking to get down to - well, as far as you want handicap wise. I had X-14's from 20 down to 10, and only changed to go to some Mizuno forged blades.

Honestly, I've never heard a bad word said, and even now when I come across one and have a hit they still feel great, and will last you a long time.

RE: hands hurting, no, they shouldn't feel bruised, maybe have a few minor blisters if you've not played golf before (or for a while) but I guess as a beginner / returner to the game you will hit a few shots that aren't out of the sweet spot and these will re-verb back up the shaft of the club and into your hands, so yeah, I guess you may feel it a bit.

(you should never grib the club as though you are throttling it though - golf is a "feel" game)

Thanks for your comments guys will definitely take a look at those clubs and see what I can get.

RE: The hand thing, yes I think a few of my swings ended up thumping the mud (lol) and reverbing back up - makes lots of sense.

I'm itching to get out there and practice but the weather is gash down here.

:)

I have found this set:

Any good for the beginner ?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130399362221&_trksid=p2761.l1259

I notice they are Graphite, will this make a difference ?

I'd personally stay away from graphite shafted irons unless you struggle to swing the club or are getting on. I've tried a few different clubs in both steel and graphite shafts and find that the graphite shafted clubs are more suited to slower swing speeds where people need help to get the ball up in the air. An example being that a Ping G10 7i with steel shaft goes 155yds whereas with a graphite it goes 135yds with a noticeable difference in height (the graphite shaft goes up like a pitching wedge!!).

I'd also steer clear of that seller, as you can see in his feedback, someone tried to buy that exact set of clubs off him in April, won the auction and then got told that the seller had sold them outside of ebay. Seems strange that 2 months later he has them back on again!

Thanks for your reply.

I consider myself fairly strong and dont think i'd have a slow swing so looks like steel shafts are better for me.

Must admit I didnt notice that neg feedback, seems strange

Same again this week!! agggggrrrhhhhhh- Playing well at the moment - striking the ball as well as I have done for a number of years but just can't get that good round to the final hole!!!

Was medal again yesterday - playing off 11, 5 over at the turn, felt like I was better than that as I played well, start back with par, birdie, bogie, double bogie, par, par. so still 4 under handicapp. Finish double, double , double!!!!! for net 73!! (CSS is 72, par 71)

Think I just stopped concentrating for the last 3 holes, not sure why. I've worked hard on my concentration/metal game over the last 12 months, trying to stay mentally in the game and it has worked very well for me but just a lack of concentration over last 3 holes cost me a great round of golf.

There's always next weekend i guess!!!
