Golf Thread

Played on Friday and was four under my handicap at the turn but had a bad back 9 and ended up only one under for the round.

Congratulations to Lee Westwood on his win at the St. Jude's. Feel a bit for Garrigus who could have double bogeyed the last to win but managed a triple and lost out in the play-off.

What a fantastic tournament, Thats how golf should be for them none of this -15 or more to win... Shows you they dont have to have 500 yard par 4s to make it hard for them. Shame Dustin Johnson went to pieces shows you how much pressure these guys are under, i think my knees would go from under me if i was out there :)

Pebble Beach looked fantastic with the rough cut down would love to play it one day, some of the 2nd shots over the cliffs... WOW! I thought the greens looked ok, bit fast maybe :) I don't think I could play to my handicap round there.

Well done Graeme McDowell he is on top form this year. I think we have the ryder cup in the bag this year. :)

What clubs would you recommend for a beginner? Budget is about £250.

I was looking at some Wilson ones, like this:

Anything forgiving (forgiving means, hitting a bad strike of the ball and the club still allows a half decent shot to come off) - Something with a nice big cavity, such as an old Callaway X-14. I higher spec club such as this will not only be forgiving, but also allow you to develop your game whilst allowing for the few miss-struck shots you are going to hit :-)

Guys, I keep hurting (and I mean really hurting as in almost staving) my left thumb (right hander).

Any idea what on earth I am doing? Could it be something as simple as gripping too tight, or is it more likely to be my swing rather than my grip?

It's becoming a real nuisance and I am starting to play worse as I am quite conscious of it when I stand over every shot. :(

Well, guess I have answered my own post...went for a lesson today and turns out I was too weak with the left hand and too strong with the right

Quick adjustment to both hands and it's not only much less painful to hit the shots, but I haven't hit the ball so well for months!!

£20 very well spent :D

I played my second round of the year yesterday - and it showed! My first round the other week was about 35 over, similar to where I was halfway through last year - around 20/25 over towards the end of the year, but yesterday was a shambles!

Must have lost about 15 balls :(
I seemed to spend a lot of the time I spent trying to adjust my grip to what I remembered of the lessons I had last year, combined with my dad shouting 'advice' at me (after I'd played the shot, obviously )
In the end I just ignored it and played how I felt comfortable, and it paid off as the shots were going straight but then veering off to the right 80% of the time. My dad watched and the only thing he could guess at was that I was pushing my swing a bit too much.

I think another few lessons are in order to get back in the swing of things (excuse the pun) :)

On another note, I hate people who say "There's no point of letting you through mate, you'll get nowhere" ... only to then have the numerous 4-balls ahead of them get a good 3 holes-distance infront, while still not letting us through despite us teeing up as they were still walking towards their second shots

Another great ball striking round for me (in pretty wild windy conditions!)

Sums up my year - ball striking is probably as good as I've ever hit it but 3 double bogies in first 7 holes is not a good start! Out 7 over, back 3 over with a much better level par for last 5 holes. Net 70 (CSS 72 usually) so probably 0.4 off and down to lowest 10.5 again (that's where i started the year and lowest I've been)

Generally a lack of time to practise is what's stopping me getting lower.

See 2 posts above.

Belleisle Open yesterday - another game of 2 halves again!!! The amount of times I've been out +1 on front nine and then just can't keep it going is unreal!

Birdies at 2,3 & 5 - out in 1 over par. (37) Back with 5 bogies, 2 doubles and 2 pars! for net 70 (back in 44)!!

Should have been so much better - still another 0.4 off and down to all time low of 10.1 now so shouldn't be to unhappy.

Played Oulton yesterday. Same old story. rubbish start then one fire for 6 holes, then mediocre, then abysmal. I dont think the late night helped, plus been at the physio quite a lot recently with my back playing up.

Only 3 weeks until i fly off to Murcia with the lads, already booked my self in for new kidneys when i get back :D

Very odd front nine today. Went round in 45, nothing strange about that, except it was 5 shots on all nine holes!

That is strange!

I played last night and yet again had a tale of 2 halfs - 23 points the front, then 15 the back :(

Just started slicing the tripe out of my drives on the back 9 for some weird reason. Maybe I wasn't staying behind the ball or something...who knows!

Will get a full round of decent golf in at some point I am sure :p

Oh, finally picked up a 3 wood today. Went for a Taylor Made Burner Superfast (2010). Seems and feels like a really lovely club. Can't wait to get it on the course for a bash :D
