Also been invited to play a place called Rockcliffe Hall in Durham, it's nearly 7900yds off the back tee's!!!

Hi Guys,

Just started to play golf. I've had no lessons, about 4 sessions on the Driving Range and i've just finished my 3rd round (9 holes).

Par is 35 and on the first round i did it on 60 which i thought was pretty good for a novice. Second round was 76 and ended up with a lot of frustration and todays round was 67.

I seem to be topping the ball all the time. I can take 2, 3 even 4 practice swings infront of the ball and just scuff the grass every time, yet when i step forward to actually hit the ball, i top it and it just bounces across the ground 25-30ft infront of me.

Any tips for what i'm doing wrong?

Could be anything mate without seeing your swing. Might be worth having a quick lesson or two to correct the basic faults.

Heading up to scotland next week for a week's golf... hopefully taking a day trip to play the Old Course again.

Played Royal Troon last night - cracking weather, course in stunning condition and best greens ever. Holed a wedge from about 60 yards on the 6th as well which felt nice - could have sworn I heard the crowd roaring!!!

9/10 times for beginners its usually head coming up and out of the way/looking for the ball too early bringing everything (head arms shoulders) up in the air including the clubhead that then hits the top of the ball down into the ground causing you all that frustration :)

Stand nice and still and focus on the ball and keep your head dead still until your club is around 12-14 inches beyond impact atleast. Hope this helps. You may fat 3-4 balls doing this because it will take a little getting used to, stick at it.

I'm going to invest in a lesson or two I think to try and see where I'm going wrong, I turned down going for 18 holes today because I've done something when swinging and pulled a muscle in my shoulder.

I can hit the ball every time, it just doesn't go where I am expecting it to.

Currently finding it very frustrating, more so because the friend who I took it up with has progressed far quicker than me and kind of left me behind

That must be a fantastic experience, not cheap though I'd wager!

I'm joining Royal North Devon GC soon, £170 for the year for under 24's and when it's usually £45 a round that works out pretty cracking value. Beautiful links course.

£145 a round or so. That's a paying visitor. I've got about 4 mates who are members there so it £10 for us!!:cool:

Stunning golf course

I played my best ever round on Sunday at Traditions in Surrey. Completely unexpected, as I'd never played the course before and it's only the fourth time I've played this year! I've also never gone under 11 over before.

I shot a 79, which is 8 over. The course is pretty short, but my short game was fantastic, especially my putting.

The only thing is that because of how little I play, I know the next round is not going to be as good!

Well, played last night and it got pretty darn grim weather-wise near the end, not only lashing down but it got to the point where you could barely see 100 yards ahead! :(

My golf took a huge downturn in the poor weather too, in trying to rush a shot on the last hole with the ball waaay below my feet I did something I haven't done since taking the game up 2 years ago.....

Thats right, I managed an airshot :D I felt like a right muppet too!! :(

Worse still though, in doing it I have done something to my left wrist. Obviously I was expecting contact with the ball, and having not made any contact, I think my wrist maybe folded back too far or something, but all I know is it is aching from half way along the back of my hand into the wrist joint, and my thumb is pretty sore too.

What a nightmare :(

Never noticed this thread before...maybe because I don't do many sports. :o

But it would be interesting to see if anyone plays at the same courses. I play at DeVere Oulton Hall (Leeds) and Bigbury Golf Club (South Devon). The latter being my favourite! :D

Play at Oulton a few times a year as it's only down the road from me, but to be honest it's faaarrrrr too expensive for the quality of the course, i mean, who are they trying to take the **** out of, £60 to play an old municipal you could play a few years back for £10-15???? For £60 you can play Alwoodly, Moortown, Moor Allerton etc which are far better courses.

Yeah I know, it is expensive but also local to me. Also I took out a slightly different approach to golf membership where you basically pay for points. Example 100 points for £295 for a year. And 9 holes is so and so points and 18 is some more. I don't play everyday and usually have to stick to playing at weekends but the good thing is I can bring along a friend or someone and use my points. ;)

I used to have the junior membership a few years ago but once I had to change to full it was just silly prices, I think like £500+ , maybe more. :o

Has seen that new de vere membership points scheme. Might try it at some point, happy enough with my Leeds golf card for £350'ish per year for tempsey, middleton, gotts park, roundhay etc for the usual roll up games, then playing in pub societies for slightly better courses.

Played today for the first time in ages. 89 on a par 70 with an embarrassing 40 putts. Hit it pretty good though. My feet were agony and I'm knackered. Ashamed of my lack of fitness.

Played a full 18 for the first time in ages today, played with my grandad and as we hadn't played 18 before, we only scored the back 9, front 9 was to "warm up" as such. Wish I'd scored now, as on the back 9 I had 5 pars (2 of those were par 5, both with birdie chances) - can't wait to play at Royal North Devon now, it'll really bring out the best in me :)

Played 36 at Tandridge Park with my work society the other day but to be honest the course was not in good condition. Withot a watering system, the fairways had died off in the heat of July and there were large patches of dead ground. The society didn't want to play "lift and place" but really, if you hit a fairway you can expect to be on grass! Many times it was better to be in the first cut. That said the greens were still good.

Played OK but the handicap is suffering from simply not playing enough.

see back in this thread - I have running theme.

It goes something like this, out 2 over par, back 8 over par with 3 sevens on my card on the back nine!

Again should have been 66/67 net but end up with 71 net for a 0.2 cut.

Seems to happen all the time. I don't particularly get nervous when I know I have a good score going but playing off 10 at the moment and 2 over par standing on the 13th tee and finish from there - triple, par, triple, par, bogie, double!!!!

That must be about the 5th time this year I've had a shocking last 6/8 holes after cruising through the first 9 or so.

Just played the semi finals of the club championship matchplay and lost on the last. -2 gross through 14 and i was only 1 up. Proceeded to bogey that last 4 holes and throw the game on a silver platter for him. Gutted :(

He wasn't exactly great tee to green but I don't think he missed from inside 15ft, he was the best putter i've ever come across.

Ah well, there is always next year.
