I would like to say i played on friday. I tore the course up but not in a good way! :( Played stableford and had 4 points at the turn! Played on and managed to get 14pts, but it was abysmal. Snap slice with the driver, snap hook with the 3 wood, topping my long irons and shanking my short irons/wedges. I would have had more chance putting if i had been blindfolded too! Wish i could take a break, but got 4 corporate golf days coming up in the next month. Time for some serious words with myself and a good few lessons.

I played this morning for the first time in 7 weeks and had a massive case of the shanks, went out in 23 over. Cured it on the back nine and came in, in -1.

Couldnt even hit the ball in the air on the front nine, was so weird felt like a beginner.

So, since my previous frustrations here i decided to go for a couple of lessons.

First lesson was mainly getting a basic swing, grip and strance position. Only 1/2hr but i went from topping the ball 10 yards to hitting it 100+ yards again (5 iron only).

Went for a round of golf and a couple of trips to the driving range. Round didn't go too badly but it was quite a challenging course, lost a lot of shots with putting and loosing balls in trees, but i was hitting it much further, and straigher (sometimes in the wrong direction, LOL!) but overall much improved.

Second lesson focussed more on fine tuning everything from the first lesson. Started off not very well, struggled to process everything he told me but once i got into a routine with it, i was away!

Trying to find a spare dsay off work now to go out for another round to see if i can bring my score down a bit :)

Played two rounds yesterday at Pedham Place in Kent with one of the societies I'm in. Started great with 17 points in the first 7 holes but only got 16 for the last 11 :(

In the afternoon, played as three-man teams in a Texas scramble and won both the team prize with 59 points and the longest drive with a 270 yd drive into the wind :)

Just played the semi finals of the club championship matchplay and lost on the last. -2 gross through 14 and i was only 1 up. Proceeded to bogey that last 4 holes and throw the game on a silver platter for him. Gutted :(

He wasn't exactly great tee to green but I don't think he missed from inside 15ft, he was the best putter i've ever come across.

Ah well, there is always next year.

Unlucky mate, good effort getting to the semi's though, 2 under gross thru 14 and only 1up is pretty stiff competition !!
Playing the Cromwell course at Tracy Park in Bath tomorrow, first time i've played in 6 weeks or so but hit the ball reasonably well at the range this evening so fingers crossed :)
Btw i got the tee time from Direct-Teetimes for £11 each !!

I won my semi-final last week and have got the final next week.. feeling good first time in the summer that the drivers going reasonably straight. Will get maybe 5 shots in the final so if i play like i have been doing it should be a close game. Putter has been rolling well recently too

Nice, £11 for each is a good price, did you like the course and how did you get on?

What sort of comp is it? All of the club championships i know of are off scratch, regardless well done and good luck in the final mate!

It's a normal matchplay with normal handicaps. Got through the two first round with byes but won the last two matches with holes to spare so feeling good about it.

Well, i know Dustin Johnson played well with a virus, but it's not only him that can do it! Just won our yearly society outing. Two rounds over two days. Second after the first day with 38pts, woke up the second day nursing a hangover and felt veerryyy strange too. Won the second day with 42pts, probably the best two rounds of golf i've strung together. Was feeling pretty crappy at the end and had no energy from the 10th onwards on the second day but kept it together. Got home to find i had a temprature of 103 followed by the usual sickness etc, still cant keep water down now and it's two days later! Trophy looks good on the bookshelf though!

final full medal round of the year today.

started - bogie, birdie, double, double, bogie, bogie to be 6 over after 6!! anyway then played next 12 holes with 10 pars and 2 bogies for 79 less 10 for net 69!

Should be a 0.6 cut (css 72) and single figures for the first time ever (well 9.7 to be exact!)

Been a good solid golfing year for me despite ZERO practise!! Mentally i think i have improved as I'm much more aware of my swing and keeping the faults to a minimum. Better course management also this year, in terms of playing sensible when out of position etc.

Also another thing I think that has helped me improve is a golf GPS (skycaddie) that i purchased. Much more aware of my yardages now than I was before.

How has everyone elses' golf year been?

That's great news mate. Single figures is something to be very proud of. For me, i went from the sublime to the downright garbage back to somewhere that i am happy with. Started the year getting down to 13 then back up to 17 and now back to 15. Something just went completely wrong with my head (i think!) and that threw my game out, went from hitting rounds in the high 70's to hitting in the mid/high 90's! Took a bit of time out from playing and had a few lessons that have put me back on track, the culimnation of it being the win i mentioned above and also being part of a team win for a club Vs club (i won 8 & 7 but was dormie after the 9th! Was playing off 3/4hcp against a 10hcp'er. He wasnt happy reckoned i was a ringer, i just pointed out he had blown his '10' handicap in the first 4 holes, so might want to have a word with his hcp secretary! :D).

For winter i've been speaking with my teaching pro, he is putting together a learning plan for me, also had a word with the boss of the local range so i can get a hefty discount on balls up there, all of which means very little winter golf but plenty of practice and lessons every couple of weeks to see if i can get near single figures next year.

For anyone looking to start up on a budget to see if they like it, Sports Direct have a FULL set of clubs with a stand bag for £40 here.

Great price for using as a "test the water" set.

As someone who plans to take up golf next year around May (will be playing once a week regularly, with some long-established golfers), what would be recommendations for things to do in preparation ?

I have some hand-me-down clubs to start with, and I'll likely look to get some clothing at Christmas (no jeans :( ). I have a driving range nearby and could arrange some lessons - I assume I should start something 'asap' but I'm not sure what's best initially ?

I'm sure I'll be inundated with valuable advice from those I'll play with, but I'd appreciate some second opinions from here.

Take a set of irons down and get a good swing manufactured before any bad habits have a chance to get hold.
While you are at home, make a target disc from a bit of A4 paper, practice lagging it up from around 10-15 feet.
Whilre none of these wil make you a pro, it keeps ingraining the correct feeling so when you go out onto the course proper, you wont be totally lost.
Putts from 10-15 feet are great going in, no big loss if they dont. On any course practice green, practice 95% of your putts from inside 6 feet. Even the tour pro's miss 50% of the tie from 6 feet, which is a great stat to remember.

Don't get married! Or if you are married get a good lawyer. Once the golf bug bites you're doomed! ;-)

This! :D

I'd recommend getting down to your local range and getting some lessons. Main reasons for going to the range to get the lessons are that once you get to know the guys there you can get discounts on balls and get practicing.
