Golf Thread

Played about 6 times so far this year, couple of frosty days, its fun driving 350yds due to the icy fairways, first bounce is probably 40ft high ! Haha. Playing non frosty golf I've managed to bust my handicap 3 times already, still lost on stableford though, one time to a mate who's a teaching pro, he shot a 6 under front nine (30) and 1 under back nine (35), was awesome to watch!

Not played since October, i played the first 2 winter comps (was still very mild) then packed up my clubs, wont be breaking them out again until late feb, early march.

Yes i am a fair weather golfer, gone are my days of playing golf dressed like a michelin man ;)

I tried a little experiment recently. I effectively played my course backwards, basically from green to tee.

I would play my full pitching wedge shot from near the green to back down the fairway. This gave me the ideal location for the approach shot to the green.. So from the tee I had to figure out the easiest way to get to this spot.

Apparently my dad used to do this on his home course, so I thought id give it a shot. I now know on each hole where I want to be aiming for a lay up if I need to.

Played in a fourball matchplay comp (randomly drawn partners) last weekend, winter greens and pretty cold, we won on the 2nd play-off hole :D
Used the new R11 driver, which i'd only hit about 4 times before and it hit well too, much to the consternation of the 10 handicapper in the opposing team lol (I play off 18).

On a different subject........
Guys on here who are members, just out of interest how much is your yearly membership and has it gone up a lot recently ?
When i first joined 2 years ago it was £630, in that year they did the drainage on all the greens and relaid them, meaning no greens for 3.5 months !!, the next years subscription went up to £680, apparently this years (due in april) is going up to £750 !!
I may jack it in tbh and just pay green fees at different clubs plus use Teeofftimes and DirectTeetimes and 2fore1 vouchers :(

I pay £50 for my club membership. Going up to £55 this year if I get my way as captain at the AGM!!

I also have to pay £350 for season ticket - it's a public council owned course. The season ticket gets me access to 7 other courses in the local area as well (south ayrshire)

I play over Belleisle as my home course and the club membership is only £55. That's because we don't have a clubhouse/any major say over the course etc -it's public and as such we have to book times a week in advance to play.

Saying that - as a council course it's probably, and is known as, the one of the best public courses in the UK, let alone Scotland. James Braid designed.

Courses roundmy way have all kept the prices either the same or dropped them. The top notch clubs are all around £1-1.2k per year. Personally i just use teeofftimes etc to get decent deals.

Played yesterday in the howling gales, was a slog, but also a good laugh. My matehit a pitching wedge into the wind that went about 60yds forwards in the air, then got blown backwards 30yds! haha. Thought it was going to be abad day as tripled the first, but then played 7 holes in 1 under (6 pars and a birdie), eventually came off with 34 points which would have got me 3rd in the monthly comp at the course we played!

Only started my golfing journey last year, so I have no affiliation. I have only played 4 courses so far and 3 of them have been council run. I haven't ruled out joining a club in the future, but for now I will float around.

Hey fergie, why did you stop using your Ping 3 wood, and choose the Taylormade?

Did you have the Taylormade fitted? Or of the shelf?

A lot of golfers do not realise, but the shaft if THE most important part of the golf club!

Ive been playing for best part of 25yrs and have only had 4 sets of irons (latest set just over a year ago) only had a hand full of drivers, 3 woods, hybrids, but each time i decide to change i get them fitted, So the transition from old clubs to new is minimal. (i once even put a new head into an old shaft)

Last year i had irons, driver and 3 wood fitted at Golf Principles (in Basingstoke) it was an addition cost of about £150.00, but worth every penny, to get the right shafts fitted. (session took about 2hrs, using trackman, same tech as 'Nike Oven') The owner of golf principles, is a gent called Jason McNiven, he worked on the Taylormade tour bus for some 15+ years so he knows his stuff.

Not sure if any of the above is helpful, but wanted to share my experiance when buying new clubs.

I might have made the mistake of just going for the off the shelf RBZ, I think ive bought right into the hype surrounding them.

Seems a bit silly now considering my 3 wood is the perfect spec for me, fitted with a stiff Diamana Blueboard. I might try that shaft in my new 3 wood, but the weighting in the head still seems very different to me and I just cant seem to nail it.

More practice needed possibly.
