Carrying a mat around? Winter golf seems a lot worse than I thought.
I thought it was just going to be windy, wet and cold, and hence less hackers to get in the way.
I will definitely ask what the deal is at the course I want to join, no point paying the fees for the remaining part of the year if I have to carry around a mat, and have a lot of winter greens to "practice" on.

It was Sandmoor in Leeds where you had to carry a mat around, been a while since i've played there now though. As an example of some of the more 'barmy' winter rules, try this page:

OK summary for you on most courses i have played (quite a lot of varied courses)
1) Yes wet windy and cold (Come to think of it i probably played more sunny days in teh winter than i did in the summer

2) You will most likely play off of Winter Tee boxes (no issue there)
3) My local course has 1 hole with winter green, the rest are standard. You still have to aim at the pin so no major change to your round. (practice putting at home in your living room)
4) Playing in winter conditions will give you a great insight into different scenarios ths improving your all round game.
5) Dont be a woosey fair weather golfer, Get out there and play you are not going to get any good playing 3 months of the year when the weather is warm

you are not going to get any good playing 3 months of the year when the weather is warm I have a lesson in half an hour, so will have a chat, really would be nice to be able to play through the winter, cold doesn't bother me and I can't see how people pack it in and then start again in spring?

Lesson went really well, I am already getting more height in my flight by shifting weight backwards and then forwards.
Had my lesson on the grass range today, it was much better than off the mats, although it was a bit mucky with all the rain.
How do you guys clean your shoes? Do you scrub the bottom with a brush or something? I stuffed them with newspaper and cleaned the uppers for now.

Any stiff brush will do really, but if you prefer to have the correct one, then search for a cleat brush.
Haha. You'll end up like me! White, black and brown shoes! We all get fairly well tarted up in one society i play in, i haven't gone as far as a few of the lads yet, one has a bright orange outfit (yes, trousers and all!!!!) with matching carry bag, another has a pink outfit and one chap has a lavender outfit! I look positively drab in my all whites! 
All for a bit of fun, i don't think we have been sober yet on one of those days, gets you away from taking it all too seriously and adds an element of fun that isn't really there in club medals etc.

kefkef you have just reminded me of something mentioning the FUN aspect of golf
Read in todays golfer a while back, a way of making a round fun is offering everyone playing a 1 meter piece of string, this can be used to move the ball form a tricky position IE Bunker! Rough! etc or if on the green it can be used to put the ball without stroke being counted
Each time you use a length you cut it off and bin it, meaning that the Meter can be split up across the round.
Just an idea i read that seemed it could be quite a laugh, especially if you have good tee shot on Par 3, you can use your meter to put the ball in for hole in one ! LOL

Yeh I'm already enjoying it more since the ball goes where I want it to more often, say 80% of the time, and when it goes wrong its not left or right, just along the floor forwards or really low and short forwards. Had some practice putting in the rain and found it really difficult as the greens were very slow in some places but not so much in others.
Also to add to the above, my brothers friends play similar, but the length of string is linked to your handicap.
e.g. handicap of 18 gets 36 inches of string or handicap of 5 gets 10 inches.

That sounds like a great idea, may have to try that one next week end.

Links golf is great. As you said, the trick is to keep it low and roll the ball onto the greens. If you watch some of the old guys playing you will probably see them taking their driver out for the second shot and just bunting the ball 150yds down the fairway with half of that probably roll.

I tend to be a bit of a bunker magnet! Thanks for the heads up though /note to self......stay away from bunkers! They are not my friends!
So i played the grove mid week...What can i say, I am still smiling. What a great day out. To start with everything is so well organised you are looked after from the moment you step out the car to the moment you get back in.
The course is fantastic, condition wise you won't beat it... you might get better looking holes, better location etc, but the fairways and greens you can't get better. It was like walking on carpet, infact it was better than walking on my carpet.
I played really well, I thought the occasion was going to make me try to hard, I knocked it round in 80. The putting was something else, you had to get it spot on they were so fast. Didnt make a single putt over 5ft... But that didnt stop me smiling
I now have a bag full of tee's....
If you ever get the chance to play the grove, snap it up. It is expensive but you will not forget the day out.

I played of 11, I dont have an official handicap (apart from the player) I think i should be playing off 13 - 14. I am so up and down at times, can go one week and hit 5 over then the following week 18over.
I think if i started to play more than once a week the consistency will come. I just cant get on down the range.... I hate the mats!
