Indeed, lol! Quite a difference between the clubs I had and the clubs I have now :p. I'll do a before and after comparison once I've cleaned them all up one night this week. They're costing me money though, as I just want to go to the range every day to get that feeling of hitting one out of the middle again!

Regarding wedges...is there any difference between a 'sand wedge' and just a lofted wedge? Is there something specific about a sand wedge's design that particularly lends itself to bunker play?

My old set had a sand wedge in it, but now I'm on the hunt for a replacement wedge or two with more loft than the MP33's 48 degrees, for sand and close to the green I suppose. I also need a new 1W and 3W...you'll see why when I post my WITB shots!

Technically yes, send wedges are normally a different shape with a larger, flatter sole so it "bounces" off the surface, rather than digging in like you get with a "normal" wedge, which makes it easier to get under and out in a bunker.

If you hit the ground first with a normal wedge (on grass), you'll likely take a bit of a divot, with a sand wedge you'll likely bounce off the grass and top the ball.

Personally, if I had infinite money, I'd carry a normal wedge, sand wedge and lob wedge.

Thanks for that. So people with 56 / 60 degree wedges and no sand wedge are using those wedges as sand wedge substitutes?

Another question - what's the best social golf site for arranging teams and games? I have no mates (that live near me and play golf anyway :p).

I think with "modern" wedges the lines are blurred a lot more, with lob wedges being half way inbeween the bounce of a normal and send wedge.

You can certainly play without a sandwedge, they've not been around that long, but they do make it a lot easier to get a good lofted escape from a bunker if you're not the most brilliant sand player (which I am very much not.. despite hitting bunkers on 7 out of 9 holes the other day :P)

That sounds confusing. :p

I just have a sand wedge and normal pitching wedge. I do pretty good with sand wedge on short distances and get up into the air good. I will freely admit that I do top it from time to time.

Unless you're confident in the bunker, a sand wedge. Tom Watson said he thought they should never have been made legal because they make bunker escapes so much easier.. that's good enough for me :)

Although I do play with golf balls that seem to have some kind of attraction to both bunkers and hiding behind trees ;-)
 
Yeah I'd go 56* sand wedge. My little gunmetal Cleveland serves me well. On bunker escapes - it amazes me that so few golfers use the PW trick when it's raining and the sand is wet. So often mates of mine are in there hacking away with a SW for three or four shots.
 
I've just been out around town and got a wee bit carried away; I'm now the owner of a set of Wilson Staff Di7 irons.

I popped into American Golf (which I usually avoid buying from due to price) and I got talking to a salesman who took me to the practice nets and let me hit a good few balls with different clubs. I'd had my eye on Wilson clubs for a while as they seem good value for money and seem to get decent reviews so I couldn't really resist when he offered me 4-SW brand new for £189. I can't find them cheaper anywhere else.

I'm off for a full 18 holes at 4pm and I look forward to seeing how these clubs feel.

American Golf is normally a touch pricey, but my local one gave excellent service when I was buying my driver - very impressed with them. Got my MachSpeed Black for £120, approx. 2months old so the price was ok in my book too.

Agreed but I also got my TaylorMade driver from there a few weeks ago for a bargain price of £129, really helpful staff as well so all in all I am happy. :)

Typically a sand wedge will have a loft of between 54º and 56º and have a lot more bounce than a standard wedge,

usually around 10º-16º to ensure it doesn't dig into the bunker as Beepcake mentioned.

For example my 55º sand wedge has 11º of bounce whereas my 60º lob wedge only has 4º.

If you look at the numbers on the Titleist wedges below you'll see two numbers. The first number is the loft and the second number is the bounce.

So the middle wedge has 54º of loft and 14º of bounce.

That would be excellent. I've just sent an email round at work and have had more responses than I thought I would, but still the inaugural OcUK Midlands Championships needs to happen!
 
If I want to go swimming I'll go to the pool! :p

Scotland is obviously a beautiful place to play golf in terms of the scenery, but you have to be an all-weather golfer!

1W: unknown Japanese knock off, the bloke that gave it to me said it was a copy of something or other. The shaft has split near the hosel, but I don't know if it affects the club in any way as it seems to only be the outside plastic liner that has split.

3W: unknown, absolutely ancient and inherited from grandfather.

Irons: 3 - PW MP33. Gave them a clean with some warm soapy water, a soft nylon brush, a cloth and a golf tee...they scrubbed up pretty well :D.

Putter: Fazer Firepower?!

Finally, here's another video of my golf swing. Been working on a few things, but my club face is still too closed on the backswing and I can't seem to stop lifting my head up. Sorry about the wind noise.

Went out tonight in gale forced swirling winds, thought it might be a massive mistake but played out of my skin. Played 9 holes, had par putts on 7 of them. Ended with 5 pars, one of which was on my nemesis of a par 5, and then to top it off chipped in from just off the green for a birdie on a par 3.

More than happy with that with the conditions :-)
